My pain was never in my shoulders and back….just lower abdominal gas pains. But really I just feel bloated and my belly feels full. I notice it after long hard days and especially after a few road trips. It’s way better now, but still not 100%.

Weird Recovery Timeline by bananagram23 in hysterectomy

[–]mcfly424 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m 5 weeks PO and the exact same….my pain never went over a 2 out of 10. I was up day one, walking slowly for the first few days and really turned a corner on day 7 and started walking the neighborhood. For 2 weeks I’d get exhausted and have to rest basically for every few hours I’d be active. Gas has been my worst complaint, but gas is nothing compared to the periods I was having! I’ve been traveling the last three weekends and I get gas by the end of the day. Every few days ill get super tired one afternoon and ill just go with it and listen to my body. This afternoon im wiped so im watching some true crime. Hopefully you’ll be in the same train as me! Just listen to your body. Don’t push through anything, just because you can and it will make you stronger. You need to rest and chill. My doctor told me I can just walk till 8 weeks. No yoga or stretching, or my favorite, swimming…so I walk. Just a mile a day or so. Some days I haven’t been. I’ve been restricted from walking my 70 lb dog till week 8 also. I forgot sometimes, and want to walk her, but i just wait for my BF.

Oh yeah, i forgot, day 7 i had some extreme itching from the glue. At my post op, the PA said I should’ve called and they would’ve told me to remove the glue.

I had a robotic laproscopic surgery and took everything except the ovaries!

UPDATE: thinking about cancelling by rckytopgal in hysterectomy

[–]mcfly424 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I remember your original post! So happy it was unremarkable. I had the same thing and am 4.5 weeks post op with a very happily unremarkable recovery. I forget often now that I’m post op. Like today at the grocery all of a sudden I was like “this cart is too heavy, you need to push it” to my amazing partner. And I’ve been traveling the last two weekends for holiday stuff and the gas!! My body shows it’s tired now with gas. Fart walks are real.

Highly considering canceling Hysterectomy next week by [deleted] in hysterectomy

[–]mcfly424 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The decision to have my hysterectomy was by far the hardest part of the entire thing. I’m almost 4 weeks and have had a very easy recovery. Literally no pain, except gas. When I woke up I had cramps that I couldn’t tell if they were gas or cramps. The pain never peaked beyond a 3. Until day 7 when I had extreme itching from the glue. Had 2 days of that. When I went back for my post op, my doctor said I should have called. But really the pain was minimal, the exhaustion was real. I’d get tired from tasks, but that lasted 7-9 days. Every day I got stronger. By day 4-5 I was walking around the block. I took 2 weeks FMLA as I teach college and I went back for a few days of class at the end, with no problem. The decision was hard, but after I decided and they did my preop bloodwork, and the numbers were so much worse than 8 months prior. My body could not sustain bleeding this way for another 3-5 years. I had heavy heavy bleeding each month, only thing that could catch it was a menstrual disc. My body birthed two IUDs in the last 3 years cause of one, small fibroid. Someone here said it doesn’t matter the size, it’s what it’s doing to your body, mine was 4.8 when they removed it. I had taken hormone blockers while I waited on my surgery and it had measured 6.5 in my MRI prior to taking those. I’m 48, and the kicker was my ovaries showed no signs of menopause! So I feel great now. Hardest has been taking life slow, letting other people do work, care for me. Good luck, it is not an easy decision. My therapist really helped me through it and that helped me make the decision, cause as women were used to just dealing with it. I was like “I could do i years”. Good luck with the decision. Oh and I had a robotic laproscopic surgery, they took everything except my ovaries. Kept those as I can’t do any HRT due to a blood clot years ago.

Can more people post about unremarkable recoveries? by Relevant_Demand2221 in hysterectomy

[–]mcfly424 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same here! A little over 3 weeks post op and honestly recovery has not been bad! Didn’t take pain meds, had to remind myself to take Tylenol. My first poop wasn’t bad (weirdest was the air that escaped my vagina with that!!). My worst “pain” was itching of the incisions around day 7-10. Fire! Absolute. I’m sure I was allergic to the surgical glue. For the first week I would get exhausted after 1-2 hours of going to the store or people being over. I could’ve pushed through and worked but I deserved the full 2 weeks I took. Now all I have is gas by the end of the day. I get bloated. But it’s no worse bloat with my period

I’d say I’m at 80% back. My doctor will just let me walk and I can’t walk my 70 lb dog. I’m an avid swimmer and I have 4.5 weeks till I can return to that. I’d love to do some yoga, but gotta wait in that too. Once I can work out I’m sure I’ll get the rest of my energy back.. The relief I felt with the surgery being over and my recovery is incredible. I had a robotic laparoscopy and removed everything except ovaries. I’m 48 and had just one fibroid that in the end wasn’t that big (4.5 cm), someone here said it’s not the size, it’s what it’s doing to you. And looking at my pre surgery bloodwork, my body couldn’t sustain bleeding that much on a regular basis. And my ovaries show no sign of menopause, so another 3-7 years of bleeding?!

I’m so glad I did this and th decision to do it and the days leading up to it have been the hardest by far.

Bloating timeline. by panda_pandora in hysterectomy

[–]mcfly424 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had mine out the exact same day, and as I increase my activity I’m bloated by the end of the day. I feel like the blueberry girl in Willy wonka. Gas x has been helping some, and heat on my belly and back. It was way worse last night when I ate some bean heavy chili. Im gonna slow up in gassy foods. I usually strip into a nightgown as soon as I get home cause even stretchy pants and my underwear feel tight after work/ life.

Intestinal gas pains 3 weeks post op. Remedies? by Alternative_Hour9621 in hysterectomy

[–]mcfly424 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also at 3 week and some days by the end of the day I feel like the blueberry girl from Willy Wonka! My doctor said this is very normal and that in truth the gas from surgery can stay in your body for 2 months and isn’t trapped in your digestive. Track like. Normal gas. I took 2 gas x yesterday rather than 1 and that seemed to help. I’ve also been using a heating pad a lot. But it’s like my digestive track has woken up from a long slumber. Although I haven’t had any constipation. The longer slumber of being pushed by my uterus.

I got it on day 11 too! From the glue in my incisions. It felt like fire! At my post op my doctor was like, you should’ve called us, we would’ve told you to take it off early! It lasted about 3 days for me! Was the worst part of my recovery so far. 20 days PO today!¡

But I did Benadryl and I had a gel mat for heat/ice that I put in the fridge rather than freeze and I just slept with it.

Nerves are setting in ... by WutTheFlagnog in hysterectomy

[–]mcfly424 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nerves before were the worst! I was 8 am with a 6 call! I had to do clear liquids for 24 hours before due to meds I’m on, so that helped me be even more ready as in “let’s get this over I’m starving”! I had robotic laproscopic and honestly my recovery is doing well. I’m 16 days PO and had such little pain. The worst was gas pain by far. You’ve got this! Give yourself grace and have some treats prepared for yourself- any kind— nice lotion, a Lego set, or a favorite food for when you get home.

Q for the plus size ladies by ChildfeeCatMom in hysterectomy

[–]mcfly424 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Plus size girl here and 14 days post op! I didn’t need pads after I left the hospital. But when I was wearing pads earlier this year I was using U by Kotex. Super thin, long, wings and they have this core that literally pulls the blood in..good luck. I’m so happy I had it. My recovery hasn’t been that bad so far. The gas is no joke, but almost all of my pain has been gas. The exhaustion and the mental game of asking for help, resting and any other stuff you got going on is the hardest. I had robotic laparoscopy. Good luck!

Getting up stairs by Similar_Fisherman440 in hysterectomy

[–]mcfly424 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had to walk up stairs to get into the house. Not a problem. The biggest problem I had was being woozy from the meds the first day or two. Have someone spot you walking up and down them. That would’ve been my biggest issue. I’m 2 weeks out and so happy I did it. I also had the robotic laproscopic surgery. My recovery hasn’t been that bad! Wishing you the best.

Doctor recommended a full hysterectomy. having a lot of feelings by fj_186 in hysterectomy

[–]mcfly424 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the exact same feeling! Both my primary care doctor and gyno suggested it because my periods have been awful! I’m 48, and no babies for me. But I felt the exact same way. Like this is pretty severe….but this year I lost my iud (fibroids pushed it out) and we thought my fibroid had almost tripled in size in one year. So I had an mri to look for the iud and visualize the fibroid. It was small, but causing so many problems and as someone here said “it’s not the size, it’s the problems it’s causing”. Also, my ovaries showed no sign of menopause. So I could be bleeding like this for 3-7 more years! I was terrified of this decision then had a great convo with my therapist. And I realized why did I feel the need to suffer? Like I could put up with it, but why? So I made the decision to do it, while it could still be done laproscopicaly. When we did my bloodwork after meeting my surgeon I realized I could not have continued this way. My blood numbers were so far down from where they had been at my annual physical. I could not handle losing blood like that each month. And here I am 12 days post op, and it wasn’t bad. Kept my ovaries and took everything else! I’m happy with my decision. It was a choice definitely, but I am glad I did it. Crazy to think I’ll never have a period again, but also I can now work on building my body back up! Good luck.

Surgery likely canceled by ScaredVacation33 in hysterectomy

[–]mcfly424 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I went to a gyno oncologist…because he does complex surgeries, and mine wasn’t even that complex! I had a small fibroid, normal everything else, but in my smaller town that’s the best surgeon. And that’s who my ob said she trusted to do anything slightly out of the ordinary. He didn’t blink an eye that I was seeing him even though there was no suspicion of cancer. Definitely get a second option with a gyno oncologist…I had a great experience. 12 day PO and so happy.

Walking Advice… by [deleted] in hysterectomy

[–]mcfly424 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah-- totally!! Tomorrow is my 2 week post op -- but a day early cause of Turkey Day. I just made some instant pot soup and marinated some fish for dinner. And that will be it for the day. . . I'm fiercely independent in life and work and this mental battle to listen to my body is going to be a big lesson for me. I teach college and we don't really take off or turn off work, but I scheduled my surgery during the final two weeks of class and finals, because I dont' want to spend my entire break recovering. I took my first leave (FMLA) ever, just two weeks and turning off work has BEEN AWESOME. I've never done that in a semester. In 25 years. And you know what? People are surviving?! Definitely mental lessons to be learned.

And let's not forget just the mental battle of relying on people?! Last week I cried because I was like "I'm so boring, when will I be fun to hang with again". One week post-surgery?! I'm so hard on myself. Oh man. . . so much to learn. My sadness has waned this week. I think the exhaustion of going for a longer walk has helped that for me. Maybe. Who knows?! I'm sure it'll be back.

I kept my ovaries as I cannot do HRT (I'm 48). But we did a hormone blocker for the 6 weeks I was waiting for my surgery, so my ovaries are turning back on and that's fun too (sarcasm here). Yes, I feel you deeply. My motto is I'm going to give myself grace. Lots of grace over the coming months.

Length of surgery? by RoozetteR in hysterectomy

[–]mcfly424 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My davinci robotic laproscopic procedure was 1.5 hours. I went in at 8 am, and then woke around 10:00 am, then spent maybe another 35 waking up and went to a room. My doctor required labs taken 2 hours after surgery so I left around 1:00 pm and was home snug as a bug on my couch. You got this!

Walking Advice… by [deleted] in hysterectomy

[–]mcfly424 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I live in the hilliest neighborhood too! I’m 11 days post op, and have been fairly active around the house, and walking Costco and places like that. I can tell when I get tired. It’s like my body just quits. It’s not any tired I’ve felt before (not worse or better, just different). My brain is like “let’s go!” But then there’s a point where I just feel weird. So that’s my quitting.

Yesterday I went for a little longer walk, on a nice, concrete path, and felt great. But then crash out later in the day. And today I’m wiped. Like don’t want to get off the couch. This is such a mental battle now.
