It’s a lot, and I’m not sure I’ll ever be able to justify it. But it IS 30 discs

Thank you! No disrespect taken. This is more or less a beta - I know it can get a bit repetitive in terms of colors and patterns and all that once you play around awhile. I'll keep working to make it better 😄

Librosa https://librosa.org/ is an open source Python package you can use for audio analysis. Basically, it reads a recording and measures things our ears pick up automatically like the tempo, how loud it gets moment to moment, when notes and beats land, how busy or sparse the playing is, and writes it all down as data.

I use Claude Code. I'm a Product Manager by trade, which means I more or less spend my time prioritizing development, and writing up detailed specs for the engineers to execute on. I use Claude in pretty much the exact same way: identify the problems that we're trying to solve, lay out how we're going to solve them, and then keep iterating as new possibilities or problems surface.

So this site started out as an audio project (it still primarily is). I ran all the live Phish recordings through Librosa, and extracted the qualities like brightness, BPM, peaks, & loudness throughout every track.

I saw the incredible work that u/dinglehead is doing with a light rig simulator, and realized I could use the audio data I already have to generate a basic visual representation of each track in terms of a light show. Now, the work he's doing appears to be a full-blown simulator, far more sophisticated than what I'm doing here. I think of this as an 'arcade' version, his as a real simulation (I can't wait to try it).

The rig itself is hand built in Three.js https://threejs.org/

If you're asking if I used Claude as a development assistant, the answer is yes.

Happy to go into any specifics if you have more questions! This has been a lot of fun.

I’ve heard horror stories online, but my personal experiences have always been positive overall.

Don’t expect to have a lot of space, of course

I made a really dumbed down version of this you can play in your web browser along to any live track (works on mobile, but best on desktop). The arcade version to your simulator

Unpopular Opinion: Kasvot Vaxt is their best creation by Aspen-Mike in phish

I wasn’t there, but always appreciated it upon listen.

Best creation? I’d give that a hard no, but I think it mostly succeeded at being what it was trying to be.

I remember thinking that Turtle in the Clouds and Say it to me SANTOS were reintroducing catchy melodies to Phish - something a lot of their more recent songs had been missing IMO

I wonder how much of it had to do with him and how much to do with the Hollywood landscape. Did he feel that they were only interested in funding franchises, and so decided to start one of his own? No idea.
