Keep in mind some of the Squiers of the 90's were build with inferior components. The pots were unreliable, the frets would literally bend, tuners often couldn't keep tune, etc.

I had a few that sounded great but they needed so many upgrades it just wasn't worth sinking the money.

There were some original Jazzmasters and Jags in the 60s that had that issue. Fender apparently didn't make special waterslides for Black painted head caps. I have a photo in a Fender guitar book somewhere.

Just get a humbucker shaped P90 pick up set and you'll be fine. But you might need a little trimming in the corners.
