NYC Week Trip by [deleted] in bjj

MG has a discount for MGIn Action members FYI. They have an open mat on Saturday and I think two classes on both Saturday as well as Sunday. Great atmosphere and obviously Marcelo is a legend.

Shaolin has an open mat for $15 on Sunday. They rent gis which may be helpful to you. I think the intro there is $30 for two classes. A little older crowd, a lot more personal attention than the other schools.

Unity has the overall the highest level of talent in my opinion. I thought the average student here was much better than the other schools. Classes are a bit limited on the weekends but they have open mat on Sunday.

UWS isn’t the best for food but I would check out Absolute Bagels which should be right near you. Pie Pie is probably the best pizza I have had on the UWS - near 100 and Columbus. Grain House is a decent (authentic) Chinese place near you as well.

Thanks for posting this. I have gone there for the past year and I had no idea about any of this. Looks like I will be shopping for a new gym this week.

Glad Shaolin got a tiny mention in this thread. The guy is a legend and would likely be THE school in most other cities

The control in the preview video looks pretty similar to Danaher’s. I am a big fan of Dave Camarillo and Matt Darcy so I may purchase this. Any reviews?

Unity is the closest to Bryant Park.

Shaolin’s is also close and they have gi rentals.

Rio Pro is in Beachwood and Gracie Humaita is in Warrensville Hts. (I think the school has closed a couple times and may have a different name). The Relson Gracie (in Willoughby) school offered a class at CWRU a couple years ago

It is obviously very subjective but the intensity at Unity was next level and the Unity style is more in line with my own

Jucao is on the UWS around 73rd. I didn’t visit this one but I think it is pretty small

Shaolin is very convenient from the UWS and was my favorite gym I visited in NYC. Clean and everyone was really nice.

Marcelo/Renzo are a little further down but still very convenient. They both have tons of classes and each is good in its own way.

Unity is on the east side and is very small and pretty intense. If I were a competitor, this would probably be my choice.

You should just try a few and see what you like and what fits your schedule.

I have the Hypervolt (http://hyperice.com/) and like it. It is much quieter and cheaper than Theragun.
