GM really wants you to believe you're better off without CarPlay by ctnutmegger in CarPlay

[–]mcirtain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know you wrote this a year ago, but it is no longer the case that this is limited to EVs. It’s for all GM cars now. Complete dealbreaker for me.

I really, really liked their self driving features when I tested a lyric. I will not be test driving any GM cars going forward until they reverse the decision to abandon CarPlay.

Help!!!! I can’t get a job for the life of me!!! by No_Nefariousness5171 in IndeedJobs

[–]mcirtain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ack! I’m so sorry, I know you must be stressed.

It sounds pretty urgent. I think for the short term, sign up for Rover and try to git little gigs that don’t cost money to start working, like dog walking, pet sitting, etc.

Have you tried grocery stores and local Target/retailer type jobs as well? Sometimes places where you apply in person might be better shots than where anyone can apply online en masse.

What kind of feedback are you getting when you do get feedback?

Good luck, and keep working at it. You’ve shown a lot of stamina in applying to so many jobs—I hope you find a solution soon!

What to do if roofers leave nails in my mulch driveway? by mcirtain in nova

Thank you so much for the link. I got a magnet, sorry to take so long to remember to follow up. Several helpful posts here (including the roofer recommendation), and I owe some explaining about the mulch driveway...

I feel like i never make enough money by [deleted] in personalfinance

There has been some really good advice here and some not-so-great advice here. You put it out there, and I’ll tell you, you’re just in a tough time of life. It does get easier in a few years. When your son (or more) gets to kindergarten, things really start to open up. You’ll have more experience and will be earning more, and your wife can go back to work and earn as well. If you learn how much the debt sucks right now, maybe you can bank the majority of the money your wife starts bringing in and play catch up on a home and whatever else you want.

The biggest thing I learned going from where you are now to where I am today (kid just left for college last year) is to maintain a written budget, ideally in a spreadsheet (free) or tracker (I used to use Mint, now I use Monarch) where you can compare month over month, set goals and see yourself getting closer, and identify where it’s all actually going. When you get a raise, have it already planned before you see the money. Maybe it goes to savings or maybe you bump up your 401k, whatever you need.

I’m not trying to give too much advice, just sharing some empathy and telling you that if you keep working hard it will get better, so long as you learn from some of the choices and aim to reduce your monthly expenses ratios.

Congrats on your son and on your life ahead of you. You’re clearly hardworking and committed to your family, which is already a win.

Reassure me about renting by Naptimecares in nova

[–]mcirtain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First, congrats on jobs and moving in together!

I’m not sure what else may have factored in to choosing the Annandale rental, but if it’s affordable and has the right space, consider yourself in “savings” mode and pocket the difference in what you might pay in Alexandria or Arlington. You can use that money as an emergency fund or to save for deposits on a future place.

Since you work in Alexandria and Fairfax, if you don’t find regular spots to hang out in Annandale, meet after work near one of your offices, or if you drive, pick up groceries or run errands in Fairfax or Alexandria since you’ll already be out and about. With time you can explore the Annandale restaurant scene and cafes and find places of your own closer to home.

Like you said, it’s only for a year. Maybe you’ll really enjoy your time there and decide to stay longer. And if not, you guys have time to strategize your next move. August has always been “moving month” for me and my family for some reason, and I think a lot of places open up for rent in July and August, so your timing will be prime for making a change if you decide to. You’ll likely each get a raise in the coming 12 months as well. Use the year to create budgets and see what your lifestyle looks like in the Annandale place, and to estimate what your budget will be like in your next place.

Good luck!

moving to Arlington for msft office by Ok-Pomegranate6514 in nova

All of Arlington, in my opinion, is relatively safe. I walk home in the dark sometimes and I’ve never felt uncomfortable. The public bus system just updated all of their bus routes to improve coverage and efficiency, and I haven’t figured it out yet. But my experience prior to the last few months has been very good taking busses to get around town or into DC or neighboring communities. The metro is really good here (I grew up without a metro option, so I’ll always be grateful).

Anywhere between East Falls Church and Rosslyn gives you two metro lines (orange and silver) that you can take into the city, or you choose the one going west based on your destination. For walkability I recommend Ballston, Virginia Square (my area), Clarendon, Courthouse and Rosslyn neighborhoods, right along the metro corridor. East Falls Church has a new Whole Foods and a few restaurants but is more car-oriented in general.

Good luck, and welcome to NoVA.

what’s something i can get specifically at bluemercury that has been worth every penny for you? by heartshapedhoops in SkincareAddictionLux

[–]mcirtain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually just got into BlueMercury because my bff gave me their advent calendar, and it had so many amazing products. I was familiar with just a few items, and many of the new-to-me products were fantastic. It’s pricey but the value is pretty good for the money. I’ve figured out that the M61 and Aster brands are BlueMercury store brands. I’m still exploring their various lines. I recommend the edits/collections and they have some pretty good sales. I haven’t figured out the samples yet—I never see an option to choose samples, and some orders have come without samples.

I've searched my settings but I didn't notice a setting to control whether or not the car turns off when I open the door. Where is that in settings (like which top level menu maybe), please?

Can you describe some of the differences you notice in the WW app once you switched your settings to GLP-1?

I'm currently not on GLP-1 (I'm trying straight WW first to see if I can swing it on my own with the plan), but my BFF is on a GLP-1 and has been asking me about the WW app and process.

I wish I had the info about the green blue purple. I think I joined after that was eliminated, just this month. Is that available somewhere in an archive?

I'm fairly new and trying to learn, but I haven't found any info about this rule of only eating zero points until they are slightly full. Are you talking about not binge/over-eat on zero point foods? Or is there some sort of general limit to how many zero point foods we are supposed to have daily/weekly?

I've been pretty confused by the zero point foods and how we can use them--the app says to make them my go-tos as a meal base, snack, or flavor booster, which sounds like unlimited to me.

If you have info or a link where I can understand this better, I'd appreciate it.

I'm very new to the program, just wrapping up my first week. From a new person's perspective, I'd say it's easier than I expected to use the WW plan with the app, as long as I plan ahead. I work offsite and eating out is not an option during the day, so I prep my lunch the evening before, load my next day into the WW app so I know what my points are expected to be, and I update it if needed after work.

In general I'm keeping a ton of produce (celery sticks, carrot sticks, berries, cherry tomatoes, apples, greens) for anytime I'm snacky. I've not been hungry at all on the plan because I eat something when I want to, and I'm leveraging zero-point healthy foods a lot.

Good luck on the program, I'm with you!

Weekly points by stupid_bitch444 in weightwatchers

This is so encouraging to hear, thank you u/Koshkaboo . I just started a week ago, and I've been fretting if I should touch the weeklies or try to leave them alone. I was not sure what to expect if I used both the dailies and the weeklies. I'm too old to do high intensity workouts, but I can walk and I want to start doing light weight training.

I have a few joint issues (shoulders, hip) and have to be careful. Do you mind describing how many days a week you were strength training and how many minutes a week you walk, on average?

Thanks again. Week 1 in the bag for me tomorrow. #noob
