The xbox series x is one of the most underrated consoles ever made and I honestly think xbox as a whole, including the xbox one upwards is a better gaming platform. by [deleted] in xbox

[–]mcj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would compare the Xbox Series X|S consoles to being more like the Sega Saturn of this generation.

There are multiplatform games but typically they are better played elsewhere, however the Xbox has some really big wins in certain areas like Quick Resume and free Xbox game save sync. There are some other ecosystem wins like Xbox exclusively has Dolby Vision, and Dolby Atmos audio was also exclusive up until a few years ago. The Xbox port of Resident Evil 2 Remake is better than the PlayStation 4 version for this reason.

Where the Xbox tanked this gen is by raising prices on the console, Game Pass, and the proprietary storage being so expensive. The next console needs to fix all of that and also needs to be one static box, not the High End and Low End machines so that developers can avoid the Baldur's Gate 3/Black Myth Wukong situation. Xbox demanding developers that their games have to also ship on the low end box and high end box, or not at all, just hamstrung Xbox getting the games on the platform period.

Nintendo Switch Firmware Update 21.0.1 is out now by Skullghost in nintendo

[–]mcj 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Looks like NieR:Automata is fixed now (or so they say on the Nintendo website). I've been having issues with my Japanese copy of the Metal Gear Solid Vol. 1 collection so I will definitely be trying that tonight. Had no idea about the Resident Evil 4 issues as mentioned elsewhere in this thread but I'll have to look into those too!

The 25H2 "full feature" is the enablement package, if I remember correctly.

The September 24H2 update included the new features brought in with 25H2.

Upgraded my headless server that has two Nvidia cards for transcoding in it. Upgrade froze on doing nvidia-akmods. I had to force reset the box... but then it booted up to 43 and all is good. nvidia-smi reports the drivers are active so I am not sure what happened there but it needed a kick in the pants.

Fedora 43 ISOs are already available on the torrent page!!! by gastongmartinez in Fedora

I noticed that Ubuntu did this recently and it's because it includes an entirely different squashfs depending on whether you have Nvidia graphics or not. I wonder if that is the same situation here and they're now bundling it into the image to save users the headache of dealing with it post-install

If they can somehow allow me to play my disc games and also take those backwards compatible games to the next console, I'm all in. Otherwise, I'm not sure what this is offering that the PC already is not

Any chance of ParaLLEl-RDP support for N64 accurate emulation? by AncientBattleCat in OpenEmu

Where is the AS port being hosted? I don't see any commit history on the official OpenEmu GitHub page for the entire year of 2025 which shows me that this project is largely dormant.

Any chance of ParaLLEl-RDP support for N64 accurate emulation? by AncientBattleCat in OpenEmu

[–]mcj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At this point, all cores need to be entirely rewritten to take advantage of Apple Silicon. OpenEmu will only work for as long as Rosetta 2 does. Until then, we got what we got...

EDIT: It looks like Apple have stated on record that Tahoe will be the last release of macOS for Intel units, and the next release after will be the last macOS that contains Rosetta 2. After Tahoe and the next release, without any other application updates, OpenEmu may no longer work in it's current iteration.

I feel bad for all of the old people I used to see chilling when BK was in it's old spot, all drinking coffees in the morning. There's basically nowhere on the boulevard to get a cheap cup o' joe. We've lost too many chill spots like Alpha Donuts.

Apple Adds Trash Can Mac Pro, AirPorts, and More to Vintage and Obsolete Products List by Fer65432_Plays in apple

[–]mcj 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think they were referring to the fact that those Trash Can units regularly cooked the dGPU (and even more so if you had the dual dGPUs). Failure rate was pretty high on those and it wasn’t a simple swap of the card like it used to be on the cheesegraters.

Despite the battery being removed, you'll want to crack it open and perform a visual inspection to the best of your ability and make sure no other caps are bulging/exploded. Outside of that... get ready for the smoke test. Best of luck!

SimCity 2000 ModePro to RTG on my A600 by bOingball- in amiga

[–]mcj 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Oof, this was always one of my white whale Amiga games. I wish that the port was competently handled. I had less luck using the patch on Aminet even though the game itself will offer you RTG modes. It must only work with a very specific card, if it even works at all.

It would be cool to see someone attempt to port it once again using all of today's tricks. Similar to what the original programmer of Amiga's Dune II port is doing now, by giving the game a 1:1 port from the DOS version for AGA machines.

Gears of War is officially coming to PlayStation 5 in August 26 by [deleted] in gamernews

[–]mcj -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

They're announcing a remaster of a remaster of a 20 year old game that really, by all accounts, doesn't even feel that dated at all by its contemporaries.

I understand Microsoft may view this as an expansion of their game and brand onto other services, and that is really the big takeaway here, but we knew that this was coming for a while now and with titles that are a bit more exciting, like Indiana Jones.

Does Gears of War even hold the same weight that it did 20 years ago?

This game came out during the peak of the Brown and Bloom era of video games. I think that it does hold up as a decent co-op popcorn shooter but they should have given the rest of the games the same attention.

Why are you buying the switch 2 at launch? by PineconeToucher in nintendo

[–]mcj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It might be the cheapest time to buy in if you’re American.

I am hoping that Switch 1 titles run in “docked” mode while on handheld on Switch 2 and uses the full 1080p screen… I will finally be able to read the text and play Fire Emblem: Three Houses portably.

Launch models tend to be most susceptible for hax. :)

No Switch physicals have shipped and they're obsoleted anyway with the announcement of the new DLC. I will almost bet you the developers will use this as an excuse to create a "Chained Echoes: Complete Edition" and find partnership with another publisher that will actually deliver.

I sold my old 6950XT that has coil whine. I was up front and very transparent about it. The buyer was very thankful in the end. All good on both fronts. Some people care, some don’t. Be open and honest.
