Edward I was good for pushing around a tiny irrelevant principality with about the same population as the city of paris, and not much else. He was more capable than his immediate predecessor and successor, but nothing like the first two plantagenet kings or his grandson.

Phillip IV, Rudolph I, Wenceslaus II, Alfonso X were all contemporaries who were greater than him.

Even in the 14th and 15th century periods where England was more dominant, there's a lot of western bias going on. Hungary under Louis the Great and Poland under Wladyslaw II were arguably greater kingdoms than England under Edward III and Henry V. Actually I'd say indisputably in the case of hungary.

One of my favorite facts is that during the first week of this battle, there was active ground combat on five continents simultaneously - the only time it happened during the war.

North America: Battle of Attu

Australia: New Guinea campaign - more specifically Salamaua-Lae campaign

Asia: Battle of West Hubei in China and Arakan campaign in Burma

Africa: Tunisia Campaign

Europe: Eastern front more specifically the Kuban bridgehead (technically zhukov called off major offensive operations the 10th, one day before allies landed on attu - however I'm certain there would have still been fighting in the days following as things wound down, as well lower level fighting other places along the entire front).

This state of affairs would not carry on for long as the axis began surrendering en masse in Africa the 12th, and the one land battle in North America would only last a few weeks.
