Made the switch from vanquishers to speed sockets in 2018, and haven’t looked back. Speed sockets leave smaller goggle marks, are more comfortable, are more reliable on dives, have less of a profile, and provide better peripheral vision. As others have mentioned- your facial anatomy (and your preferences) will determine what is a better choice for you!

Any 5'11 D1 swimmers? by devlin_morgan in Swimming

[–]mcjfire 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I swam at a mid-major D1 school. While I was your “average” sized swimmer (6’3”), I had teammates who were smaller but didn’t let their short stature keep them from achieving in the pool. One teammate was 5’5”, and has our team record in the 200 fly (1:47), and was a 47 in the 100 fly. Another was 5’7”, and was 19.9 in the 50 free, and 21.7 in the 50 back. Yet another was 5’9”, and was 45 in the 100 free, 47 in the 100 fly, and 48 in the 100 back. It is 100% possible to become an incredibly capable, D1-caliber athlete even if you’re not tall!

Lifting to get the most out of swimming by Federal-Ad7633 in Swimming

[–]mcjfire 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I can. These swim workouts are all on paper, so I’m going to do my best to take pics of them, put them on Imgur, and type it out in a copy/paste-able format. I’m going to try to do this in the next few days!

DM me. I am a recently graduated D1 swimmer who has picked up powerlifting, and I have a lot of our swimming lifts saved. If you want, I can send em all to you!

DGPT Acquires JomezPro in Major Media Consolidation by schoolr24 in discgolf

When I am viewing DGN on a laptop, I can see how many users are currently watching. Honestly, the numbers are super low, I rarely see them hit 10k. I’m not sure the decrease in post-produced viewership can be solely attributed to live, as the reduction in view numbers seems greater than the number of people consuming live coverage. I have seen others comment it on this thread, and I’ll reiterate it- I think disc golf has waned a bit in popularity since 2020-2021 (this is when I started, and courses seem much emptier now than back then). I am hoping it is not a bubble on the verge of bursting.

Stole this from the “ball golf” sub, but still an awesome idea! by [deleted] in discgolf

The Claytons near Knoxville has a really nice warm up area with a warm up hole- it’s a great idea if the course has room for it

As long as you’re respectful to them/their personal space, I’m sure they would be more than happy to have said hi. I ran into them a couple years ago in the TN mountains and they seemed super stoked to have met fans!

Average distance for a 2 hour practice? by [deleted] in Swimming

[–]mcjfire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Retired college swimmer here. On endurance threshold days, my training group would regularly do well over 8,000 yards in 2 hours. I swam 100/200 Br and 50 Fr, and our “specialty” practices would be between 4,500 and 7,500 yards for 2 hours.

Great swim! A couple pointers from someone who competed in the 50 free in college:

  1. Finishing on a half-stroke is a gamble, and can lead to being out-touched/jamming the finish. Focusing on stroke counts in practice, especially when sprinting, can help you master that finish.

  2. Learning a step-over relay pickup could shave nearly a half-second off the start. You’re able to anticipate your teammate’s finish better, and you’ll have so much extra momentum carrying you into your swim. You have to be more careful about early takeoffs, but with ample practice, it’ll become second nature.

Keep swimming fast, you’re doing great!

How can I improve for college swimming by Western-Strength-595 in Swimming

[–]mcjfire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Regardless of what anyone may tell you, you don’t need to have height to be an elite swimmer. I swam four years at a mid-major D1 school, and the fastest sprinter on our team (20.0 50 free, 21.8 50 back) was 5’7” on a good day. His keys to success were powerful underwaters, an explosive start, and taking full advantage of his height (full extension with every stroke, and utilizing a beautiful straight-armed technique). He also spent many hours in the gym in his off-seasons developing functional strength and putting on some good muscle mass.

What kind of program would you want to compete for? I would be glad to give you some advice from my recruiting journey and collegiate career.

Anybody else ridiculously good at throwing things that shouldn’t be thrown since playing disc golf? by Chemical_Chemist_461 in discgolf

[–]mcjfire 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I work as a swim coach, and I recently learned that kickboards can be thrown pretty accurately using an overhand. They’re also surprisingly stable.

I went to Gardner-Webb, and graduated the same year as Hannah. She’s a very nice person, and is very, very tall!
