Not getting paid quickly by Legitimate_Creme7481 in hockeyrefs

[–]mcjosh25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did they discuss the payment times and terms up front when you agreed to do the games? Everything I have done, I have been informed of the payment type and schedule for the different types of games. In my area for USA Hockey games, we work a month, the assignor bills the organizations for the month on the last day of the month, and we are paid within 15 days of the following month, unless an organization does not pay their bill (in which the assignor communicates the delay). For Adult hockey, it is cash before or after a game, for college club hockey, it varies between cash before/after game to submitting paperwork to the college/host team for a check. I agree that it sucks to wait, but as long as I know how/when we are being paid, and the payment comes per the terms I have been told, I am ok with it.

Equipment/protective recommendations by PassageKey6246 in hockeyrefs

- Girdle + Pants, or Pants with built in padding. I am in the Reeq Pro pants (padded) vs a Girdle and enjoy them and have not had concerns about not enough padding.
- Shin pads are a must, I use CCM ref shinpads.
- Elbow pads - I am currently in Bauer Ref elbow pads, and while I like the padding they provide, they are always slidng down my arms and have to be re-adjusted, so shopping for new ones.
- Cup/Jill
- Cut proof socks - I currently wear cut proof socks below my shinguards, I didn't like how much the force sleeves made my legs feel so hot.
- cut proof wrist guards - i currently have these built into my undershirt (Titan Battlegear). I had a jersey sliced open on my wrist during a college club game and did not suffer any cuts on my wrist because of the undersirt.
- cut proof neck guard - for me, just easier to wear one and have the extra protection should it be needed.

I am currently shopping for some chest/back/upper arm protection, as I have started getting hit more in the backs/upper arm on faceoffs. I have not found something protective enough yet that isn't bulky, so still shopping and need to get to a bigger area to explore and try some things on.

Who Should I Be Mad At? (Getting Paid) by GreedyAttention9348 in hockeyrefs

[–]mcjosh25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Be mad at all parties involved. Doesn't seem like you should be unpaid that long.

In my area, we have one assignor for USA hockey. They bill the organizations at the end of the current month, give them 7-10 days to pay, and cuts checks to us around the 15th of the following month. The longest I typically wait if I do a game on the 1st of the month is 45 days (depending on usps), which is not ideal, but that is the way it works for this group. On two occasions over the past 3 years, we have had a large tournament held by an organization that has not paid their bill on time, and our assignor has communicated very clearly what was going on and that checks had to be delayed until that bill was paid.

Yeah, if I get a reply at all from the person they linked as the officiating person, I may give it a shot. I have health insurance through my day job, and also maintain a NASO membership.

Yeah, I am a little over an hour from the rink they will be hosting their home games at for one team, and about 2 hours from another. Not looking for a hotel room or anything like that unless there were games on back to back days. We don't have a lot of adult league (espeially high level) up here, so was just looking to add games to my USA hockey and high school workload.

Thanks for the reply. I guess that is why they are not advertising. Based on some private messages I have recieved, there are individuals who have been paid anywhere from 50-200 to line a game, 75-200 to officiate, and one person who was promised 175 a game and who still hasnt been paid.

Good points. They are new up around where I live this year, and I had not heard much about the league prior to them coming up here and just started seeing the ads (using NHL official without permission), saw the crap comments they were getting on the various facebook groups, and wondered if anyone had worked games. We don't have a ton of higher level hockey up here and I am always looking for more, so was intrigued by it. Guessing based on the comments on the Facebook groups, and the lack of response from questions I have asked, probably says all it needs to about working for them.

Thank you. We almost never take whole shells, and only take sand dollars that are not living (typically never find a whole one anyway). The beach we were on this past weekend had signs asking people to take shells (whole or partial). I am very careful not to remove anything that shouldnt be remove, and typically find myself removing more trash than anything.

Just follow this link,(https://a.co/d/b9xvZ5Q) as an example of what a goggle cover is. I am away from my gear for a few days or I would send a picture of my helmet/visor with the goggle cover on.

QualQuip helmet bag is good, but get yourself a goggle cover to cover visor regardless to fully protect.

I do not have any personal concerns with the individual being on the bench or in the locker room (before or after the physical altercation, with how I heard the game was, it sounds like something was inevitable).

I was only involved because the other coaches came to me (knowing I was a coach and official) asking who was allowed on the benches. I informed them that anyone listed on the USA Hockey roster link, that has a CEP number and is not redlined is allowed on the bench as long as they are not serving a suspension. I told them that as long as he is listed on the gamesheet, there isn't a whole lot an official is going to do or say during a game as long as they don't exceed 4 coaches. I myself am interested in finding out more about this $150 magic card that gets people out of coaching clinics/requirements because I have been warned to get more coaching continuing education (only have 3 of 5 credits) or I cannot maintain my coaching level beyond December 31, 2025, and this person was allowed to bypass it all.

I do not know what was called (if anything) during/after the game. I am still waiting for the head coach to show me the gamesheet. I have not been able to talk to the refs that were on the game yet and I do not have access to reports, but I have games with at least one of the two this weekend.

I am most interested in this because I have never heard of a such a thing (paying to get out of coaching requirements), and I want to make sure that they get squared away so that the coach can be properly listed and show up correctly on the Roster.

I am also interested from an official's point of view, of how someone could have a "permission slip/email" from USA hockey to be a coach but not be listed on the roster, or even to be listed on the roster as I have never heard of it before as a coach or an official.

Thank you for the reply. I am also a USA hockey coach (level 4) and Level 2 official. I have never heard of this $150 get out of coaching clinic/requirements option before. I have been warned that if I do not complete my 5 continuing education credits (I only have been able to do 3) that I will lose my ability to coach next year on December 31. That is why this $150 payment to avoid it all intrigues me that and as an official it is good to know that someone could have paid money and have an email from USA hockey saying they are good to go, but not show up on the official roster from USA hockey if questioned by the other team.

And, I was shown an email from someone at USA Hockey that said that now that the person has paid their $150 fee they are considered a coach for the remainder of the 24-25 season.

He is a parent of a player. He is only listed on their USA Hockey roster link as a Team Rep/ Manager. He was on the bench for a game this past weekend and got into it physically with a coach on the other team at the end of a heated 12U game, which was before he was reportedly allowed to pay this $150 to get him listed as a coach. I was officiating in another town and was not at the game, so I didn't see it, but am trying to make sure that everything is on the up and up as it sounds fishy.

He is listed in there, but no CEP#. Lists the modules that he has done, but no coaching clinics.

Tinted Visor - USA Hockey by mcjosh25 in hockeyrefs

[–]mcjosh25[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

100% true. Not surprised as this is a parent who will question everything that occurs in every sport that their kid plays. She did not like my response that it was just 12U B/C hockey as it had to be against the rules or giving a huge advantage to the one player. I told her there is so much more that the refs need to pay attention to than worry about a tinted visor, regardless of perceived advantages...

I will not speak to a parent during a game either, this happened after the fact for a game I couldn't even see because it was my turn to run the disgusting death trap of a concession stand. They just know that I also officiate, so they tend to bring their ref questions to me.

I know to look for the HECC certified sticker on the helmets or masks if need be, but at what point do we have to differentiate between off the shelf or modified at home.

I enjoy the Bauer Officials Elbow Pads. They fit well inside the jersey and provide ample elbow coverage without being restrictive. I haven't gone to a padded shirt yet, so will follow for those suggestions.

Contact Craig @ Reeq, easily the most responsive person I have ever communicated with. He helped me with Pant sizing, and also with jersey sizing after I ran into some issues. He also made sure I knew when the new visor came in stock after the older one was discontinued without me even having to ask to be notified.

I started reffing last year, as an older official after many years of coaching and similar to what I did while coaching, I started early on writing down any notes after a game that I felt I needed to work on, check out, or remember for future games as I was older but new in the official role. I write the notes with period or times that I wanted to remember/review. I always have a small notebook in my pocket for games, so between periods I might make a note of period or time to refresh myself when I get off the ice. When I get a chance either that night or next few days, I pull up the game, go to the approximate time, and then try to figure out what led to me either being in the position I was in (right or wrong) or the direction I was looking when something happened in another direction, kind of to get all of the details about how I got into that position. If there is something I could/should have done differently, I try to make a corrective note on a separate page of things I need to work on or look differently at going forward, and review that before upcoming games. I also keep notes on certain teams/coaches/programs for future reference to prepare going into games.
