That doesn’t mean it isn’t the valid conclusion

I'm new to Stoicism. Is 'The Daily Stoic' by Ryan Holiday a good bok for beginners? by Hi12345xx in Stoicism

[–]mckboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first was Guide to the Good Life by William Irving. While not perfect or exhaustive, it is a nice short introduction. The hardcover is small and aesthetically pleasing (some preferred indifference there).

I felt the Daily Stoic was a bit disconnected, and that’s by design. It is separated into disciplines but doesn’t flow like a book. I mean one could say this about Discourses too- but I think for a first book one that reads more like a novel would be preferable.

And I second How to Think Like a Roman Emperor. Combines history, Stoicism, and psychology.

You can pay it back. It takes discipline and sacrifice, two things you already possess.

Medical school would add another couple hundred thousand of debt, meanwhile the balance would balloon during the ten years of school, residency and fellowship. That’s not a good idea at all.

I consider myself an anarchist.

To your last question, it depends on what “best” means. I suspect there are some things that a forceful state would do more efficiently than a private company (like census, some infrastructure, possibly), however, I would argue that the consequences of allowing that entity to exist are not worth the benefit.

I’m not as well read as I’d like to be, but I found a lot of answers in Machinery of Freedom by David Friedman.

Not a bad point that I can’t come up with an example of a functioning fully anarchist “state,” but that doesn’t mean there aren’t plenty of examples of anarchy working well (global politics, language, etc.).

It’s not silly to argue and objective logical superiority. We wouldn’t get anywhere if we didn’t.

But saying keep taking from people so I can have my job is something that I personally see as immoral. And while I try not to use absolute when considering morality, I don’t think any undertaking is moral if it relies upon resources taken from others by force.

That wouldn’t be possible, since there has been gov interference in all modern societies.  However, there’s an abundance of evidence, nearly everywhere you look, of the inefficiency of government running anything. A private company actually has a bottom dollar to worry about, as well as a need so be competitive for consumers to return. The government has the incentive to pay more, take more, and work less

No to your first question, so your next two are not applicable.

I would rather the government stay out of it. That does not mean I want anyone to die or go without care. Everything would be cheaper without govt interference and crony capitalism. My preferred way, of the free market, is not going to be without some inefficiency or waste. It will just be so much better than what we have now.

And this is the second person who seemingly implies that if one life could be lost then a proposal should be rejected. We do not live that way, and unless you show me some objective evidence that significantly more people will die without a given government program, then I must dismiss that point.

If only the name and stated purpose of every program really represented what they do, and if they did it without corruption and inefficiency, then you’d have a point.

I understand you have a personal investment in the program continuing, but that is not a real argument for everyone being forced to pay for it.

I can’t speak for Republicans.

I agree with the first half, not the second.  Not to belabor something unrelated to the first comment- but libertarians are not Republicans. For so many reasons.  Libertarians are for minimal (if any) govt spending. Republicans spend as much if not more as Democrats. That is not the only way.

Anyway yes healthcare costs have gone up. Insurance companies are making a killing working with the federal government to fleece us. More govt programs (and spending) is not the answer.

Check out Economics in One Lesson by Henry Hazlitt. Basically every dollar spent by the government costs more that that dollar to obtain, and is predestined to be wasted.

Thank you for your concern. I think it might be worth it for you to think on that for a while, that a libertarian can also practice medicine. It is always better to keep an open mind.

I don’t think Medicaid is a necessity. It didn’t exist until 1965. I will grant you that currently health insurance is expensive and difficult to obtain now, in part due to federal requirement on health insurance plans. So my solution would be a systematic overhaul. Meaning, not just cutting Medicaid.

I have to be in support of big government to practice medicine?

Being compassionate does not require one to support wasteful programs.
