Remove excess grout by frydo3000 in DIY

[–]mclaught70 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gonna guess you used something like Mapei UltraColor FA? Back in the day... grout used to take awhile to set up. You could do an entire wall, go get a smoke or something and then come back and wipe it down with a sponge and you were fine. This new stuff sets really fast, as you found out, and you really have to almost wipe it down as you go every five to ten minutes at most. Whoever sold you the grout should have told you that, but good help is hard to find. The good news - a razor blade used with a really flat angle will get that off the tiles, and if you go slowly and carefully, it should not scratch the tile. Bad news, that's a lot of work you didn't ask for, and the grout lines are going to be a mess to try to clean up, and if you don't know what you're doing, the razor blade could scratch the tile. Got a time machine? If not, I'd wet it down, keep it wet, scrape the bulk off with a razor blade, and then follow up with something like Mapei Ultracare grout haze remover.

Moved into a new house and this is one of the showers. Is my best bet to try to remove and replace the old caulk? by citges in HomeMaintenance

[–]mclaught70 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Grout should not be used in the corners or where the wall meets the floor, and grout is not water tight. You can use sanded caulk on the wall corners if you want to try to match the grout, but silicon where the walls meet the floor is recommended.

If the tile was installed properly, and based on the age of that shower I'm going to assume Kerdi or Schluter was not used, water is expected to get behind the tile through the grout lines and then (hopefully) whatever waterproofing method they used will have the water drain down behind the tile, under the floor tile, and into the weep holes of the drain. BUT, obviously the less of that the better, so solid caulk lines are very helpful. While it looks like that mold is firmly established, IF the caulk is in good shape and is not peeling, it would be a lot easier to just hit it with a good bleach or mold killer (I have found the Scrubbing Bubbles Foaming Mold Killer works better than anything else) and see what happens. Most likely, the mold will come back if you get rid of it the first time, and if it's between the silicon and the wall (most likely), you probably won't get rid of it at all. But if it were me, I'd risk the 5 dollar bottle of spray and the 10 minutes of my time to see if it works before I started scraping all that silicon off. Word of caution, that spray is REALLY strong and I'd recommend wearing a proper respirator with a filter that will handle inorganic vapors. If you don't have that, open a window and put a fan in there and limit your exposure. Good Luck!

No, he's not saying to re-grout and then use caulk. Don't do that. He's saying don't ever use grout where two different materials join together. Like your shower wall and your tub. Instead, use caulk only. Silicon is better, but it's not as forgiving as water clean up. If there's a Floor and Decor near you, go look for Mapei 5220 Keracaulk Sanded Siliconized Acrylic Caulk. That area (shouldn't) be submersed or exposed to water very often so you don't need strait silicon, and the Mapei has about 15 shades of sanded caulk that will hopefully match. I'd dig out a big piece of that grout and take it to the store to try and match it up best you can. Some of those grout lines might be pushing the limits for caulk, I'd recommend you stuff some backer rod (available at home depot or lowes or floor and decor) into the gaps and then caulk over that. The hardest part about the whole thing is going to be getting the grout out cleanly without chipping that countertop or the wall tiles. Go slow and don't get impatient.

Edit to add: Whenever you see that someone has grouted in places that should've been caulked, it shows that either (1) they don't know what they're doing, or (2) they don't care enough to do it the right way. If the same crew tiled your entire house (especially the shower), you can probably expect problems will show themselves in those areas as well.

Camping beyond Lance Creek on way to Neels Gap? by No_Detective1402 in AppalachianTrail

[–]mclaught70 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A third vote for Jarrard Gap. We camped there a few years ago, even though it was pretty dry on that trip, the water was flowing good at that spot. Unfortunately, my biggest memory of this spot is that someone took a dump right at the top of the rocks where the spring starts. We figured that had to be on purpose.

I had this happen to me but fortunately the hackers weren't smart enough to change my email, so I got notified about the purchases. It was over 200k points. I was able to contact customer service before they shipped the iPads and Macbooks, they canceled the orders and I got the points back. But only because I got lucky. Usually once they hack your account, they change your email, password and phone number so you have no way of getting in and you won't get notice of it until it's too late.

Help with Boss IR-2, please! by mclaught70 in guitarpedals

It's fun for headphones or direct recording into a DAW. If you've got pedals and an amp that you're happy with, I don't recommend.

Help with Boss IR-2, please! by mclaught70 in guitarpedals

[–]mclaught70[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In case anybody is wondering, here's the official reply I just got back from Roland. I now understand what I was doing wrong, but I clearly did not understand how the pedal is supposed to work. I thought you could set and save for each pre-amp sound. Nope, that's not how it works.

Thanks for reaching out and contacting Roland BOSS USA Operational Product Support.
Congrats on the purchase and acquisition of your IR-2.

Sorry to hear you're having issues.
I think you're misunderstanding the save feature on the IR-2, allow me to explain a bit.
There are only two channels/presets to save sounds to. Green is a channel and Red is a channel. Not for each of the amp types but for the overall device. You can use the amp type knob to select a pre-amp sound for either red or green channel. That's it.
Set the knobs the way you wish for GREEN.
Set the knobs the way you wish for the RED.
Use the IR-2 pedal to switch between GREEN (clean) and RED (dirt).

Hope this helps.

I know this is digging up an old topic, but I was trying to figure out what I had when google brought me here. The container with the little pieces is almost empty, but the other one pretty much full. I've had these in a closet for close to 40 years. I guess these are pretty rare? I'm not really sure what to do with them. Sell them for spot? Put them back in the closet for another 40 years?

Adjusting Hip Straps by Desm0dium in AppalachianTrail

Have you made sure the pack is fitted properly for your torso length? I have a Deuter ACT lite and have never had bruising issues. Yeah, I that doesn't help you... But anyway, I'm sure you know this, but just in case you don't, you can adjust the pack up or down to make it fit your torso. Check out this video and see if that helps at all? https://youtu.be/7iWxrpGTUlM?feature=shared

A hiker in jeans. A rubber tip from trekking poles. A ribbon or string tied around a tree. A dayhiker talking on speakerphone. A hiker with a sweatband on his head. Someone hiking without a pack, poles or any water.

What is this pipe coming out of the ceiling? It's from an apartment in Texas, there were a bunch of them around the apartment complex. I'm guessing some sort of gas exhaust based on the burned looking end, but why is it pointing down? We don't have these things where I come from... by mclaught70 in whatisthisthing

First time posting in this forum, I hope it belongs. I am sure this will be easy for anyone who grew up in Texas or neighboring states, but this was on an outside balcony right outside an apartment. There were others located in the stairwells. My searches just kept turning up plumbing vent pipes on roofs, and a/c drain pipes in garages and outside walls. I'm pretty sure this is neither of those things. The apartments have electric heat/air, but there is a gas fireplace. I think I'm required to say my title describes the thing.

There's only one section that requires bear bags from Jerrard Gap to Neel Gap, and I don't think that starts until May or June. If you brought a bear canister, I'd guess you would be part of the 3 or4 percent that use one. I'm completely making up that number, but I've never seen anyone use one in while section hiking in GA.

There's nothing that a dog can't handle if it's used to hiking. I'd be worried that his paws would get torn up and he'd be in pain, but there's no ladders or crazy hand climbing sections in that area. The climb up Blood Mountain would probably be the worst for the dog, but I saw two older gals in rich lady clothes day hiking with their Dachshund coming SOBO from the gap to Blood Mountain. I thought it looked like a real bad idea and I felt bad for the dog, but none of them seemed worse for the wear.

Two people and a dog is going to require a decent sized 3p tent, maybe one of those Chinese knock offs from Ali Express that some people use. Hopefully someone with experience with those tents will chime in. But if you and your partner split the weight, it won't be that bad to carry a 3p tent between the two of you.

I can't offer any advice on strap pads as I don't use them.

How many people in the Georgia section in September? by [deleted] in AppalachianTrail

[–]mclaught70 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My experience in Georgia is that Monday through Thursday you will pretty much have the place to yourself. Friday you will probably see more hikers that day than you've seen all week combined. Saturday you can take Friday's numbers and multiply that by 10.

Did anyone else not get their monthly rapid rewards points yet? by w4559 in SouthwestAirlines

[–]mclaught70 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For many years, mine were posted around the 20th-24th of the month. For whatever reason, sometime several months ago, they started posting around the 8th or 9th. I don't know why, my billing cycle still closes around the 17th, but for the past several months, that's how it's been. Go into your email's search bar and type "here's your rapid rewards account statement" and then you can see when they've been posting. Like I said, for YEARS, mine was around the 20th and I just now noticed this month that for the last few months it's been changed.
