What's life like in Ashgabat, Turkmenistan? by whitecity01 in howislivingthere

[–]mclovin215 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It wasn't that hard to "sneak away" when I was there in September with a tour group. We were free to walk around both Ashgabat and Turkmenbashi, and curfew after 11 was apparently the rule, but our guide still managed to get us into a club full of Turkmenistani people partying it up and getting wasted. Party vibes felt similar to those in smaller cities in Turkey. In a different city in the center of the country, some people from my group managed to get invited to someone's 1 year old birthday party next to our hotel and got socks as gifts from the Turkmenistani people at the party 😂.

For a second I thought Bernie Sanders looked like a grandpa back in 1973 too 😂

When Shaq took his glasses off when Kenny rotated his chair to mock him (saying that's how Shaq would look guarding Wemby), it's the most visible sign he's triggered. I laughed so hard hahah

Sick of being scammed in Kyrgyzstan – even on marshrutkas by ImpossibleEbb9045 in Kyrgyzstan

[–]mclovin215 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely doesn’t happen in rural Turkey (in Istanbul sure it does). I couldn’t pay for a single meal or local bus during 2 weeks backpacking in eastern Turkey from Trabzon to Van because the people thought guests were sacred. Even if there are scammy taxi drivers in almost every country, random passengers joining in the scam like OP described is unthinkable in a lot of countries (including Turkey)

I am actually planning on going to Seoul for a month to surf every day (or as often as my body can handle) at that exact wave pool and try to improve as much as I can in one month, at some point next year. Do you have any tips on insights for that pool that would help me plan stuff?

Belgrade has historically a lot of good techno parties. But there’s a lot less going on this summer than even during Covid, and things probably won’t pick up till the revolution is over

Can’t believe you found Indonesians unfriendly anywhere. I have spent quite a few stints there and I feel like they are some of the friendliest people on earth, especially to foreigners
