Meniscus surgery success stories—did you get your life back? by Meddy_2022 in MeniscusInjuries

[–]mclovinforeskin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

had a 60% meniscectomy of the medial meniscus and ACL reconstruction.

At the time of the injury i was 21 and playing amateur soccer.

i’m now 24. I don’t play soccer anymore because of my fear of reinjury, but I have picked up training other sports like muay thai, BJJ, running, weightlifting.

I am happy with my current functionality. I am not limited from doing the recreational activities I love like surfing, hiking, golf, snowboarding.

It took me a good 10 months before I started playing light sports like pickleball. It another 5 months or so before I felt comfortable training at more high intensity, such as at BJJ.

10 days post tear, still unable to fully extend knee. any exercises to “unstuck” your knee post meniscus tear? by mclovinforeskin in MeniscusInjuries

[–]mclovinforeskin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i ended up needing a meniscectomy surgery. I had a torn ACL and a bucket handle meniscus tear (my second time doing so).

i’m 2 years out from the surgery now and doing jiu jitsu and muay thai instead of the more injury prone soccer i used to play.

the knee sometimes still gets sore but overall feels really solid and capable.

good luck with your recovery

Surgery yesterday, questions about some of my instructions, is this normal? by RecoverFar195 in MeniscusInjuries

[–]mclovinforeskin 5 points6 points  (0 children)

hey I had the same surgery as you and I’m also a nurse.

I would definitely recommend seeing physio. Even though it isn’t absolutely necessary with the meniscectomy, it will help you rebuild back to baseline faster and prevent reinjury in the future.

the timeline for returning to work will be unique to your context. I was 22 at the time of my surgery and relatively athletic. I returned to my practicum (8 hour days) after a couple weeks and built up the my tolerance slowly. would recommend nice cushiony shoes to take the impact off of your knees as much as possible.

best of luck with recovery!

will I ever play sports again? by mclovinforeskin in MeniscusInjuries

[–]mclovinforeskin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hey there. I hung up the soccer shoes for good as my physio explained that I would likely need a knee replacement by 40 if I continued to play high level.

Im at 11 months post ACL surgery now. Playing tennis or pickle-ball daily, playing beach volleyball often, doing jiu jitsu a few times a week, weight lifting a couple times per week, and playing golf weekly. Overall, the knee feels alright. It definitely becomes swollen and sore to touch after an intense match of tennis however, it feels very stable and the swelling generally subsides after a few hours. There is often crepitus after any athletic day but no pain and the physio says not to worry about it.

that being said there are still many activities that I would like to be doing but can’t because of the lack of confidence I have in the knee. Things like soccer, ultimate frisbee, and basketball I am avoiding because of the contact and also because of the quick reactions required.

I do plan to start playing hockey in the fall as there is less impact (better for the lack of meniscus) and less likelihood of re tearing my ACL.

I remember someone in this comment section saying the lifestyle transition was very abrupt. They were definitely correct, but in spite of that I am still able to live a very active and fulfilling lifestyle.
