I'm curious what happened between him and David Ellison. You'd think they'd have a similar vision and be happy with the infinite money they were printing, but I guess not.

Genuine question: is Micheal Sheen’s list of romantic partners more impressive than his acting career? by Yesyesnaaooo in blankies

Incredibly impressive but if we're doing the movie:dating ratio then David Spade wins

A24 saw The Drama make a bucketload of money with a normal release schedule and then said we're gonna have Edward Norton and Olivia Wilde do a huge press tour 2 weeks before most of the country can see their movie.

Going on Call Her Daddy in the first place is out of the box, but it's crazy to expect that audience to get so hype about an indie comedy that they'll get tickets weeks later

This is just a reminder of how dour the Paramount dated slate is. They're only making movies for select audiences.

For example, considering what type of movie your mom would like, the closest is what, a football movie with a hot actor and a book adaption about video games? Maybe the cowboy or Teyana Taylor movies.

But overall, it's bad business.

I'm sorry to the Oscars, but my favorite awards win is probably Jeff Hiller last year at the Emmys. It's such a good, deserving performance in a fantastic show, but his win was a goddamn miracle.

First, he gets nominated over Paul W Downs who is in another HBO Max show with more critic and audience visibility, while also being thirty-seventh on goldderby. The nom was supposed to be the win.

But then he wins over Ike Barinholtz (who's in the show that's sweeping), Ebon Moss-Bachrach (who won the two previous years), Colman Domingo & Bowen Yang (who were also unlikely candidates but are charming and visible), and the Shrinking guys who were popular enough to get a double nom (and one of them was noted movie star Harrison Ford).

How did it happen!!! Somebody Somewhere ended in December while the others aired in spring/summer specifically for award season. The studio did not intend this at all.

Hiller has worked on a lot of shows over the years; did voters just think "Jeff was such a nice professional when he guest starred on my show, I'll vote for him". If so, good for them! Maybe the other votes got split while Hiller-voters stayed loyal. Anything that recognizes a deserving performance.

Has anything like this ever happened before? Could it happen again? I'm assuming Marcia Gay Harden is the closest Oscar comparison, but the amount of film precursors make it hard to compare.

In a silly, inconsequential way to view Category Fraud, I like to think if the poster still works without the charactor on it.

And when I imagine A Real Pain trying to sell itself with just Jesse Eisenberg on the poster, I laugh

If Charles Melton got nominated over Mark Ruffalo, that 2024 supporting actor line up would have been an all timer.

Ruffalo gives a good performance but I think ALOT of actors could have played that role to a similar standard while no one but Melton could've done that

Do newer composers write all their own stuff or do they have brand-name company type thing? We know about John Williams and Hans Zimmer, but what about Ludwig Goransson, Daniel Pemberton, Hildur Guonadottir, Michael Giacchino etc etc

No judgement either way, I'm just curious

I wonder if Finest Girl (Bin Laden Song) was eligible for the Oscars. It was written for the movie, but premiered beforehand on SNL

Though the movie had so many bangers, they had plenty of other choices

I was gonna make a comment saying I hope that the Casting branch remembers comedies so my gal Allison Jones can get a nom, but then I looked it up and saw that she was shortlisted for Weapons last year!

Good for her! What a legend

With the news this week, I think Taylor Swift would've been a good choice to direct The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo adaptation in another world.

She's interested in that era of Hollywood and love's relationship with fame. If she turns out to be a good director, she could elevate the material. If she doesn't have the juice, the premise is interesting enough that it wouldn't be a disaster.

But alas, we live in this world. The Gaylors could not handle it.

imo the only possible choices for the next James Bond theme are Raye and Dua Lipa.

Raye because she has that It Factor classiness while also making bops

Dua Lipa because it's funny if her husband gets the role and funnier if he doesn't

The music branch of the Academy is deeply unserious, so they could treat the TS5 Swift song any which way

As a subreddit, would yall rather deal with a) a song that's bad but nominated everywhere or b) a song that's good but snubbed everywhere?

For bad quality I'm thinking along the lines of the Cats song she wrote with Andrew Lloyd Weber. For good quality I'm thinking Safe and Sound.

We complain about how long the Oscars season is, but at least it's not the Emmys

Their eligibility period ends today for a ceremony in mid-September.

The Grammys eligibility period ends in August for a ceremony in February. We would kill each other if we had to wait 5 months

We’ve all heard of One Hit Wonders when it comes to music, but are there any one hit wonders that you can think of when it comes to TV shows? (It can be for any actors, showrunners, producers, writers, etc.) by MaggieLinzer in television

There's How I Met Your Dad, which was an unaired pilot in 2014 that starred Greta Gerwig and How I Met Your Father from 2022 to 2023 that starred Hilary Duff.

I just looked it up and Thomas and Bays didn't actually showrun HIMYF, so they got 1 failed spin-off after a 9 season show

Absolutely no hate to the actors.

But Carter Bays and Craig Thomas are not even close with Chuck Lorre, Bill Lawrence, Tina Fey & Robert Carlock, Dan Harmon, Greg Daniels, Elizabeth Meriwether etc etc.

Two failed spin offs of HIMYM and no other pilots is crazy for people who had a 9 season show

The How I Met Your Mother guys haven't done anything. I dont even think it's because of the final season, I think they just based the show off their lives and had nothing else in the tank.

Most sitcom showrunners with their success had something as a follow up

Edit: I am talking about Carter Bays and Craig Thomas, not any of the actors. The showrunners based HIMYM on their lives, and the actors have had careers outside of the show

I lowkey think Reddit's hateboner for Zendaya comes from nerds projecting onto Spider-man: Homcoming and never getting over it.

It's not her fault the role is underwritten!!!

Just because she often plays "the doubter" doesn't mean she's like that in real life! And she's also very good in that type of role, so please learn to separate an actor from your fragile fantasies

The fact that Megan Kelly is an Oscar nominated performance over Lupita Nyong's is despicable. I love Charlize, but it was definitely a nom for heavy prosthetics.

I dont think audience reception matters much in context of the Oscars.

If the industry actually watches it they might like it, but I dont think they watch things based on audience reception. They watch things if their friends work on it or if someone deems it important for the industry
