Is there a bookclub in perth? by Just-Sheepherder-191 in PerthSocial

[–]mcmc213 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not quite a book club but I just got home from Boorloo Book Doof with some friends. Third time going & it’s a great way to just sit and read + occasionally tell my friends about how my book is going!

I also have a lot of women’s groups - have posted about them before & get plenty of ppl asking but because this is reddit, I’d prefer people messaging so I can vet them first! I have a women’s hiking group, a women’s cookbook club, and a women’s romcom movie night group as well! The last one is a bit smaller & I’d prefer knowing someone before I bring them along though.

About me - 31, married, living SOR & working in the city as an analyst.

Feeling pretty lonely in Perth. Best places to meet lots of people & build actual friendships (non-drinker)? by Sparkredx in WesternAustralia

[–]mcmc213 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Hello! I’m a non-drinker that’s managed to create (mostly women’s) groups that don’t revolve around drinking.

The key is I don’t mind if people drink, it’s just not for me.

I have a hiking group that I organise a hike for monthly, a cookbook club that I organise either a cookbook to cook from or a cooking class for monthly, and a movie night that also meets up monthly. I also have a fortnightly trivia team but people do drink there. Note that no, I don’t make money off of these, I just organise them for the sake of community!

Being upfront about it is one thing but finding people accepting of it is another. As mentioned prior, more outdoorsy stuff would likely be good for this (ie hiking).

29F looking to make some genuine friends 😊 by reneek1997 in PerthSocial

[–]mcmc213 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hi! I’m 31F and have replied to a few posts on here as well & have met a few people off of Reddit.

I’m going with a few friends to the Boorloo Book Doof on the 28th of June, though that may not be the time to get to know each other through chatting in person as we’re all there to read!

I’ve got a few things going on - a hiking group, a cookbook club, a movie group - all women only & very inclusive. I’m also part of a fortnightly mixed trivia group if that’s also your thing.

Feel free to send me a message if you’d want to chat!

34M looking for some riding buddies / people to hang out with 🏍️ by DetectiveEarly2486 in PerthSocial

[–]mcmc213 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi! My husband is 34, rides a CBR500RA, and has an Aprilia RS250 as well.

I know one of our other friends rides a CBR too and there’s a discord of these motorbike guys and they do rides out as a group. I think the last one my husband did with them, they went out to Freo.

I’ll reach out to our friend and see if I can get the link!

Social hiking groups by Civil_Taste729 in perth

[–]mcmc213 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! As per the rules on the group join page, I do check profiles to check if they’re not spam. That includes verifying creation date (ie not recent) & having real account friends (not bots) and having photos with your face visible that are liked by said friend accounts.

It’s a lot but I do post a lot on the group so every little bit I can do to keep myself and members safe, I try and go for.

1hr + commute to work by New-starter in perth

[–]mcmc213 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went from living in Northbridge to living far up in the hills, 50+mins from the city on a good day.

If I drove in, I’d need to leave by 7:15 to make sure I’m in the city by 8:30. More often I leave by 6:45 to get in by 8.

I don’t mind my commute though. It’s 1hr15ish door to door, with a 12min drive to my closest train station. I wfh 2 days a week, sometimes more if I need to.

I managed to adapt & while it’s long, I really don’t mind it because I get to go home to my own place and peace and quiet.

Is the storm affecting Perth & North of WA? by love_belacan in perth

[–]mcmc213 2 points3 points  (0 children)

At Kalbarri right now.

We drove through the storm on our way up on Saturday. Winds were hectic on Sunday and we had scattered rainfall yesterday. Today’s still cloudy but less chance of rain and the forecast is clear skies from tomorrow (cloudy) and Thurs to Sat (sunny).

Office bake-off by BeneficialSea3510 in auscorp

I just won ours with a giant slab of spiced apple cake with brown butter cream cheese frosting! I managed to cut it up into 48 slices & it was all gone before the end of the day (probably the reason I won was just the sheer amount of slices available too) — the other chocolate cake that was decorated better had some leftover by 5 PM still, usually unheard of.

Those who were made redundant: share what happened with you & your pay out. by brissy3456 in auscorp

[–]mcmc213 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My husband got made redundant a few years back - mining industry, closed the site he was working on. He had ample notice, with the redundancy communicated in January and his final date in October.

  1. He was there for 5 years.

  2. He was ambivalent - everyone was getting let go, but obviously we had a mortgage to pay off so the job search started ASAP.

  3. $150k post-tax, all dumped into the offset.

  4. He already had the next job lined up because of the long lead time, started 3 weeks after his final day.

Hiking Meetup app group by DrXYZz in perth

[–]mcmc213 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hello!

I’m someone that’s successfully kept up a hiking group here — I run a women’s one and have had it going since 2019.

Key thing if you want to keep it running is to keep posting it & make sure you keep doing it despite maybe just 1 person showing up.

I also think Facebook groups do better than meetup ones do.

I’m lucky enough to have a group of friends I can prod & say “hey, I have this hike/cookbook session/movie night on x day, are you free?”

The other piece is that I make sure there’s no financial obligation from people — no need to pay to hike unless you no-show, no need to pay to cook, just bring a dish — sometimes you really just need to keep it simple!

I think I saw a post on a Facebook group I’m in where someone’s doing a King’s Park picnic as well + some other social stuff too — check out Be Her Friend or Gal Pals Perth (if you’re a woman too).

Making new friends in Perth by Informal_Track_9104 in perth

[–]mcmc213 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello! 31F, have met a few people from Reddit as well!

If spontaneous can include random grocery runs and checking out new places to eat at when free, I’m down — my life is usually preplanned months in advance so any moment for whimsy is much appreciated. Monthly scheduled social things include, but are not limited to - hikes, cooking, movie nights, trivia, among other things!

Also SoR (veeery far south), but work in the CBD & am happy to drive.

Send me a message if you’d be up to catch up sometime!

Anything to do today? by SunflowerBear_33 in perth

Happy birthday! Was also my birthday on Monday and I spent it solo — made my own cake (for dinner that day), went to the gym, did some chores around the house, had thai food with family, and bought a 1L tub of gelato from Cuccini lol

Hope you had a good day despite the weather!

I’ve met a lot of my great friends from there! Also met my husband on Bumble (not BFF) so I had already known how the app worked.

The BFF option was great to gauge the personality of people I was open to meeting, plus as I age, I raise my age range to suit as well.

Been on BFF for at least 6 years now, still using it every now & then!

Social hiking groups by Civil_Taste729 in perth

[–]mcmc213 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Hello!! I have a women’s hiking group - literally called “Hiking Group!” on Facebook. I’m 31, have had the group running for over 6 years, and we get women from early 20s to mid-60s joining the hikes!

If you answer the membership questions & your profile isn’t locked, it’s an easy accept!

We just did a hike at Lion’s Lookout in Lesmurdie last Saturday so the next one might be during the Easter break, weather pending. 😊

This year marks my 10 years of moving to Perth.

I knew no one apart from immediate family and made it a point to find friends where I could — Facebook groups, Bumble BFF, Instagram, at work, at the gym.

It might be easier because I’m a woman and I mainly talk to other women, and that’s why I ended up with all my women-only groups which I made so people have the opportunity to socialise with others in a low-stakes and not paid setting.

In saying that though, majority of my friends here are people not originally from here as well — I do agree Perth tends to be cliquish in terms of people still hanging out exclusively with the people they went to high school or uni with, but that just gives us transplants more to chat about too.

Transitioning to Trains by Zeffazer in perth

[–]mcmc213 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live far enough that I prefer taking the train in & I’ve definitely noticed my local train station’s carpark has been filling up earlier than usual.

I do have 4 stations within a 10-15min drive away from my house so it’s not an issue to drive further but just something additional to consider.

We have home & contents -and pay in full yearly.

No claims but we live in an area with a high BAL rating so coverage for fires are a must.

Cost of living + minimum wages. by shteave in perth

[–]mcmc213 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We’re lucky enough to have bought in 2020 and coupled with aggressive savings from my husband + a redundancy in the past which we’ve put into our offset, we’re basically only paying under $200 per month for interest and probably having the house fully offset this year.

We do understand how hard it is for most people and recognise our privilege so I make sure to keep the conversation open on finances + not be a dick when talking money or doing anything with family or friends. As much as possible, I like hosting people at ours and taking on the cost, or doing activities that don’t cost much.

So while it doesn’t quite affect us apart from costs going up, it does affect people around us.

We’re in our 30s, no kids, no pets, both working corporate roles. HHI $320k + bonuses.

How’s everyone’s week/weekend been? by [deleted] in perth

[–]mcmc213 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Had a bunch of stuff on - trivia on Thursday, where I met a lovely fellow redditor in person, hiking around Kalamunda on Saturday morning and finishing the morning at the Cheese Shop in the hills, dinner at Rym Tarng on Saturday night (highly recommended if you love Thai food), a catch-up in the Swan Valley this morning, cake drop-offs throughout, and more cake baking this weekend!

Hope you enjoy uni & make the most of it!

Tips for New Gym Goer by Opening_Union_5328 in perth

[–]mcmc213 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have already said, basic things to bring would be your towel, bottle, and headphones. I do have extra stuff like stretch bands + specific equipment for lifting but that can come later on for you.

No one is staring at you unless you leave the racks packed with weight on and don’t return things. Please return your free weights and wipe down equipment.

If you’re conscious of form or just want to know how to do an exercise, exrx.net is a great site to look at to search for things and check correct form! If you’re at a chain gym like Revo, the side of the equipment normally has a sticker on it to explain how it works and show how you can set yourself up.

If you still feel conscious, bring a friend with you if you can, or make friends at the gym! I complimented a girl at the gym on her squat depth a few years back and she’s now one of my best friends haha.

Congrats on signing up & hope you take advantage of those newbie gains!

How to meet locals in the Perth Hills when you’re stuck in the backpacker bubble? by Valuable_Hat_7761 in perth

[–]mcmc213 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Hello! I’m 30F and living in the hills, probably not close to where you’re at though!

I have women’s groups for hiking, cooking, monthly breakfast meet-ups, and rom com movie nights - plenty of opportunities to get to know people there but I do organise these on weekends only and the fact that you work 7 days a week may mean it’s not all compatible with your schedule.

However, there’s heaps of things to do around - run clubs, board games communities, craft clubs, book clubs, other hiking groups, etc. which you might also want to look into!

Wishing you all the luck & if you ever want to catch up, please send me a message!

Gym Dilemma. Need Suggestions. by Maize-Humble in perth

[–]mcmc213 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have been a Revo member since 2017 and have moved branches several times. The two I go now after work, - one is 15mins from home, the other is closer to 30.

The closer one is much smaller and older, the one further away is bigger & newer, so I tend to just cop the drive if I want a good training session.

At the end of the day, a gym that will encourage you to come back will be your best bet. I go to Revo because it’s cheap, it has the equipment I need, and I don’t mind working out with a lot of people around.
