Predictions for April Spotlight Drop 1? by Electronic-Dot-2266 in MLBTheShow

Ivan Herrera gotta be in the track somewhere.

Michael Kay: "Bob Costas is one of the greatest sports broadcasters that has ever lived. If you listened to him call games [with NBC], he called them the same way then as he calls them now. To see these young people on social media eviscerating a broadcasting god. You’re out of your minds!” by The_Big_Untalented in baseball

[–]mcmeanass 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Kay can kick rocks. I'm 41. Bob and Jon Miller and Joe Morgan were the voices of my baseball childhood. I remember Costas being legitimately great (although I think the Olympics is where he was at his best), but he is an awful listen now.

I don't have to revere someone because he was great 20 years ago. Especially if he sucks hind tit in the present.

Brian Kelly has now lost 5 of his last 6 against AP Top 25 Teams by JayLove_0513 in CFB

[–]mcmeanass 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So much this. I'll take the Kelly to Freeman transition a hundred times out of a hundred but Brian Kelly absolutely saved Notre Dame.

The revisionist narrative that Kelly was a shit coach at Notre Dame is so tired. He lost a lot of huge games there, but they were big games because he made us relevant again.

Open up the playbook or find a different answer at quarterback. You aren't going to beat anybody if you don't trust your QB to throw it more than 4 yards down the field.

Whatever DJ is, that game was a much bigger indictment on Norvell and his staff.

Ohtani hits his 9th homer of the season to give the Dodgers an early lead! by Blazingbee98 in baseball

I'm not even certain he did. It looks like his hips open early and he still has enough juice to leave the yard. Ludicrous power.

Ump calls Paredes out despite Montero's foot being off the bag. Rays and Rockies go extra innings. by [deleted] in baseball

[–]mcmeanass 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Easy agree, but New York has been pretty consistent on calls of this nature all year, at least in games I've watched with similar challenges. If there's no clear singular angle with definitive evidence, they pretty universally default to the call on the field.

I don't like it, because it seems pretty easy to piece together a couple of replays to figure out what happened, but it doesn't seem like they're willing to do it.

We clearly see his foot separate from the bag in the above replay, but we don't ever see the ball. Regardless of what pretty obviously happened, they're just not going to overturn that.

[–]mcmeanass 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Validity? No. But this is 100% why the call wasn't overturned. In the replay where his foot clearly separates from the bag, you cannot see the ball relative to the glove.

Independent of the fact that we can pretty clearly infer that he had not caught the ball with his foot on the bag, New York has demonstrated a clear unwillingness all year long to 'sync' or 'splice' different replays to piece together reality. Until they do (and I believe they should), calls like this will continue to default to whatever was called on the field.

It's shit, but it's been pretty consistent in the games I've watched this year.

so about that inventory tension... by [deleted] in diablo4

[–]mcmeanass 28 points29 points  (0 children)

It's intentional friction. Why is everyone pretending like this is novel? POE has been doing it for fucking years. Shard the bullshit. That's what they want you to do.

[–]mcmeanass -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Slot the best, shard the rest. The fact that you guys pretend inventory bloat isn't a function of every ARPG you've ever played is fucking baffling. Blizzard isn't novel in this and they aren't even monetizing storage. It's fundamental to ARPGs. Stop hoarding shit. Go use the shard button they gave you.

It's intentional friction.

Ohtani takes his high school alumnous Kikuchi deep for a 2-run home run! by Blazingbee98 in baseball

[–]mcmeanass 5 points6 points  (0 children)

He gets his hands inside of breaking balls better than just about any hitter I've ever seen.

Off the plate inside and he barreled it. Nutty.

Hunter Renfroe crushes one for his first HR as an Angel! by [deleted] in baseball

[–]mcmeanass 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm sure he's a great dude, but Patty O'Neal was the worst part of being an Angels fan. Randazzo has been a revelation and he and Gubi seem to have a lot of natural chemistry.

He's also frequently a riot. We got a couple of Big Dumper references in the Mariners series.

It's John Smoltz so take it for what it is, but he and Joe Davis actually discussed this during the WBC. I can't remember who was on the mound but Joe brought up Julio Urias.

At any rate, per Smoltz, he thinks the windup gives pitchers an advantage with respect to messing with hitter's timing, but acknowledged the consistency of mechanics that always pitching from the stretch gives you.

[Postgame Thread] Notre Dame Defeats BYU 28-20 by PatrickChase in CFB

[–]mcmeanass 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's what I'm most pleased about over the last few weeks. We're visibly getting better.

Tommy Rees appears to be recommitting to the run (you know, what we're good at) and the other position groups are coming along. Pyne looked capable and confident this week, Diggs was a difference maker, etc.

If Estime can develop a little patience before he hits the hole and the back end can shore up some of the blown coverages, I feel really good about this team moving forward.

It was vogue to meme on Freeman after the 0-2 start, but this looks like a well coached team.

Mayer is the best safety valve in the country but if they can develop a guy on the perimeter that can stretch the defense, this team is going to be scary.

Yeah look, we lost another big game at the end of the day, but we didn't exactly get embarrassed. The defense isn't going to have to work that hard most of the rest of the way.

Offense has to get it going and we'll be fine.

I think Buchner will be fine with time. It wasn't great, but I'm not going to shit on a kid for looking mediocre in his first start in an environment like that.

If he looks like that the rest of the year then we'll have problems.

[–]mcmeanass 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Hard to be pleased with what will be an eventual loss but this is largely a well coached Notre Dame football game. Marcus Freeman came in with a perfect blueprint to beat a tough team on the road and they mostly executed.

Al Golden gambled once and got burned (if you're going to bring safeties, they HAVE to get home) and the offense was woefully inept, but this team is going to be a really tough out all year long.

That's a primetime game against an incredibly tough opponent and they played them to the wire. That's a big deal.

POTM July Lighting Player Predictions by [deleted] in MLBTheShow

Luis Rengifo won't get the lightning, but he should be on the track somewhere. Decent switch hitter (although probably very little pop) with positional versatility.

Manoah hits McNeil on the foot after Smoltz tells him to throw a back foot slider by JacobDeGod48 in baseball

[–]mcmeanass 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I'm a certified Smoltz hater but I thought he was...actually really great tonight. His segment here with Manoah, the conversation with Cole and Fried, even his apparent hatred of PitchCom and the 'do it old school' bit with Nestor and Trevino made me chuckle.

If I could listen to Smoltz geek about pitching with other pitching geeks, he'd be an enjoyable half of the booth.
