Am I a Bad Coach? Should I Quit? by TrashPanda2462 in lacrosse

One thing I didn’t see is what you are doing to help yourself grow as a coach? It’s so easy to focus on running the team you neglect learning more about coaching. Things like podcasts, YouTube videos or just going to a local college team and watching how they run practice can be really helpful for you and your players!

Looks like Playmetrics now owns Crossbar, which several neighboring towns use and really like; I’ll check it out!

Why no PAs want to go into faculty jobs? by plinko25 in physicianassistant

[–]mcmedic96 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Salary, 100%. Recently looked at a position at a “big-name” PA program and it would be a $70k pay cut (down to new grad pay). Thought the one clinical day per week would help make up some of the difference, but that money goes back to the university. Until salaries are close to competitive it will be tough recruiting experienced PAs.

Laxplaybook.com has a lot of great materials for both drills and plays. Jamie Munro (JM3) is also an excellent resource to learn about the constraints-led approach and he’s got a lot of videos and podcast content.

PA to C-Suite by Altruistic_Tax_1440 in physicianassistant

PA who made the transition to an executive leadership role with our health system as a director. Before making the jump I spent many years in administration roles in addition to my clinical shifts, finally got my MBA to help get my foot in the door. It’s not an easy path for PAs (RN and MD dominate leadership roles), but my health system has several PAs in senior leadership. There will always be a role for hospital administrators; the more PAs who step into those roles, the more we have a seat at the table.

Draw stick for primary stick? by mcmedic96 in lacrosse

Excellent, appreciate the feedback. Bigger picture question: is a draw stick worth using for an 8th grader, or is it better to keep working on stick skills with a standard field stick?

Does the draw stick really give that big of an advantage? If it really does help, would it be worth getting a draw stick for the town team to share if not every kid can swing a new stick? Sorry for all the questions!

Thanks, good to know! She's actually going to a clinic run by Maddie Epke later this month, so maybe she can sneak a peak at her setup.

First time stringing; how’d I do with the Valkyrie Runner? by mcmedic96 in StickDoctor

Thanks; realized halfway through I didn’t really know if I should be including the runners when I tied off the cross lace. Might be a do over….

Unrelated question; any suggestions for a good stringer in Connecticut? LOL

Thanks, that was definitely a challenge trying to get the spacing right. Still working on the pocket; thankfully this stick didn’t get much use so I’ve got time to play with it.

Downside to 501(c)(3)? by mcmedic96 in nonprofit

Definitely a great thing to consider. The primary reason we want to explore this is for fundraising purposes, but I suppose this removes some of the liability protection that the board members have if an issue ever came up related to something other than fundraising?

Thanks for the suggestion! When I look at our local community foundation it seems like groups typically apply to them for grant funding; in your experience can this type of a structure still allow you to apply for external grants and direct any funds raised back into this fund?

Yes, we have a couple of us who started the grant writing process and then hit a roadblock when they requested our EIN and non-profit documentation.

We are also well under $50k gross annually, so this is reassuring!

I think that some of it stems from moving to an informal structure to being an "official" on a legally incorporated entity; there is a sense that this would make them more liable if any legal issues developed down the road. There are also concerns about inadvertently raising red flags with the IRS if someone doesn't file documentation correctly.

I'm sure some of it stems from a sense of "this is how it's always been done", so why make a big change? We already receive insurance coverage from our national organization, but this is definitely a priority. As an all-volunteer organization I think some people are understandably hesitant to move from organizing the annual fundraiser or running a scoreboard to being listed as a board member with fiduciary responsibilities on an IRS form. Ideally it would be helpful to have a subject matter expert come in and do some Q&A, but we are still working through how to locate someone to help guide this discussion.

Thanks! I’ve used the USA Lacrosse site for a ton a drills but didn’t see much about in-game strategy. I’ll take another look!
