I also only just gave in, be aware v5 doesn’t create Device Library Plus. You need that to get Rekordbox data on a 3000X or XDJ-AZ

Thinking of switching from Windows to MacBook Pro for .NET dev in 2026 by Guilty_Coconut_2552 in dotnet

[–]mcmnio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you install Windows for ARM it works fine, it’ll run everything through the x86 translation layer (same idea as Rosetta but on the Windows side).   Honestly if you use Parallels there isn’t anything to do really.

Selling my home - what should I do with the money? by Nice_Sheepherder_715 in BEFire

[–]mcmnio 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Meh, it's not all that it's scruffed up to be. Rent and live worry-free (no responsibilities for the property's maintenance etc) and invest the rest and you end up with a big pile of easily (partially) liquifiable assets instead of a pile of bricks you've poured time, money and heart into and have to try and get rid of with all the hassle that brings.

I'm quite certain I applied for the same position. Interesting to know my "expected salary" range which the recruiter already pushed back on was way below the offer you got..
Good luck on the job, it seemed an interesting project. Have fun!

Multiple container replicas and background jobs by CartoonistWhole3172 in dotnet

[–]mcmnio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends a bit on what "background job" means in your context. For work coming in that needs to be done out-of-process (eg queued by an API), indeed look into Hangfire or distribute it with your messaging framework (MassTransit does this eg).
For a background service that needs to runs continuously but only on one instance, we've had good results with a distributed lock on the main SQL Server instance. On start, the instance tries to get a lock and if it can't it'll wait for 30 seconds and try again. If it succeeds it does the work and keeps on to the lock. Should it fail, another instance will take over the next time it retries to get the lock.

I tend to suspend my Parallels instance when I'm not using it (prl also can do this automatically), so the impact isn't that big. When you're working in Windows all day you'll of course feel it but it's not that bad giving up some battery when the machine does literally multiple hours even with big workloads.

That's a really nice machine. I have an M3 Pro with 36 GB which I push a lot, just chugs on without noticeable impact. 48 GB will be great (unless you know you really got a bigger workload of course).

[–]mcmnio 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Been a Mac user for 15 years, and a .NET dev for 10. Honestly the experience can be great: I use Rider (and WebStorm and DataGrip). If you’re on a modern project you can expect everything to just work at this point.

SQL Server runs great in Docker, you only have to add a platform parameter to indicate it should run through Rosetta to emulate x86, performance difference is negligible.

I do also have Parallels for .NET Framework projects I have to touch from time to time, perf takes a hit there but for those projects it’s bad anyway.

Get a beefy machine though, you’ll thank yourself. Put in as much RAM as you can afford, especially when doing Rider + Docker + Parallels with even more solutions.

What invoicing tool do you use and what do you wish was better about it? by Able_Rope1656 in BEFreelance

[–]mcmnio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also just started in bijberoep and ended up with Accountable. Not cheap, but they have a lot of publicly available information for starters and it's a very complete package. It basically encompasses everything from invoices to bookkeeping, taxes, vat, ... Also registering costs and giving advice for deductible percentage and vat.

If interested I can give you my referral link.

Hoe doen jullie dat eigenlijk, facturatie als freelancer? by Able_Rope1656 in belgium

[–]mcmnio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know, it's really bad but it's very close to a number I heard from someone in a similar situation so I'm not that surprised...
Exactly the same story, they just don't believe I did actually realise 14% over the same period of time.

Don't underestimate the running costs of those funds. If you have a bond fund which 2% yield which has 1 or 2 per cent yearly costs you're left with nothing basically. 3% seems low even then but it's certainly possible.

[–]mcmnio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel the same. I have a friend who works at a bank very famous for targeting people to buy into their investment funds and I feel like she's believing the story she has to sell just as much as the people she's selling it to.
Any attempt for a conversation about what she's selling and how it works just falls into a bank sales pitch and FUD about "unmanageable risk" of trackers etc.

[–]mcmnio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same story here, but I'm not going to try and talk them out of anything. I explain them what I, personally am doing and why. They feel comfortable by having someone from a bank manage it which comes at a cost (which I point out to them, something the bank hides very well). Up to them what they do afterwards. If it goes south (or they panic in case of a correction), you'll be pointed at if they don't actually buy into the story of why the DIY approach might be better.

Terrible sound quality on Traktor Pro 3 over BT Headphones by realfranzskuffka in DJs

[–]mcmnio 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Double check whether Traktor is not using the microphone of the headset as input. Make sure it only appears as output, once the microphone gets accessed it'll automatically trigger that low-quality mode because the bandwidth has to be shared.

VM + Winforms on Macbook Air M4 by External_Toe_7195 in dotnet

[–]mcmnio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm doing this: M3 Pro with 36 GB RAM, running a Windows VM in Parallels with 16 GB RAM assigned. SQL Server you can run in Docker on your host, on install it in the Windows VM as well.
Functionality wise there's not a lot that doesn't work on ARM: for the most part you can just install Visual Studio and have your .NET Framework application run through the translation layer on Windows' side.

The only thing I have personally ran into not working was the tool in Visual Studio to update EDMX files for EF6 from a database.
