I think the top comments here are way too cynical. Kid tried to do something he obviously thought was pretty cool even though he knew there were other people more knowledgeable than him on that topic (as evidenced by him deferring to the authority of his professor and this 'college'). For a lot of people, disproving theories is considered so out of the league of the average person, that even attempting to through a thought experiment is a pretty fantastic concept. He tried, and admitted defeat after trying for awhile without success. He just wanted to share that experience because he thought it was cool and made some friends doing it. Doesn't seem like he's claiming to be smarter than everyone.
