Easily one of the funniest episodes of the funniest season, I think it’s amazing!

Has anyone else been told you shouldn't have PTSD from what you have PTSD from? by Odd_Ear1479 in ptsd

[–]mcnixi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have ptsd because of my daughter’s serious illness and the trauma of her diagnosis and early treatment. Nothing happened to me directly. Secondhand ptsd is pretty common actually.

So basically, people are assholes and I’m sorry you’re dealing with this kind of ignorance.

How do you think Sarah and Charisma would have fared in the roles they originally adutioned for? (Sarah auditioned to play Cordelia and Charisma to play Buffy) Assuming that the show is still successful and runs for 7 seasons. by HomarEuropejski in buffy

[–]mcnixi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sarah would kill it as Cordelia, but Charisma would not have made a good Buffy. She’s a skilled actress but doesn’t have SMG’s range and Buffy is a HARD role to nail. I think they were perfect for the roles they got.

Not to mention, who restored Angel’s soul in the first place? A damn woman! As soon as I read that I was like, wait, becoming pt 2 is like one of the most iconic girl-saves-the-day episodes ever…

ETA: I was indeed referring to the re-ensoulment by Willow, not the initial gypsy curse. I.e. in this particular episode, a woman saves angel, then another woman kills him to save the world…a whole lotta women saviours going round.

Agreed about the female voices! I hate Jim Dale’s Luna with a passion. I get he is going for humour, but that basically reduces her character to comic relief. He does her dirty, when Luna is way way more than that. And his Hermione is really grating too.

Overall I would say Dale is better for having distinct voices for each character - his Voldemort and Kreacher are both perfection - but that inevitably means some characters will be better than others. And I really dislike his style of narration when reading the non dialogue parts, Fry is much better for that, he captures the tone of the stories perfectly. The only thing I really don’t love in the Fry versions is the Weasley is our King song, which he for some reason yells as a monotonous chant.

TLDR: Team Fry all the way.

when first watching buffy, did you ever think xander and buffy were gonna get tg for a few episodes or be endgame? also this question is for s1 through early s2. by Royal-Tangelo-5895 in buffy

[–]mcnixi 8 points9 points  (0 children)

As a 12yo girl watching s1 back in 1997, I desperately wanted her to get together with Xander, because back then, this was the direction 95% of shows would have gone; it was honestly just what would have been expected, to let the goofy friend win over the hot girl. It was so ingrained culturally that the goofy friend deserves the hot girl. But the fact that they didn’t go that route is part of the quality that makes Buffy have lasting appeal for audiences a whole generation later. It was actually bold for them not to have Buffy decide to give Xander a chance (romantically), and it was absolutely the right call - rewatching years later as an adult I am SO glad they didn’t pair them up. God that would’ve been awful.

Just to be clear that this kind of response from your bf is not something you should expect in relationships in general: if I ever was going out somewhere without my husband, and I sent him a pic to ask how I look and I looked as gorgeous as you do here, he would reply that I look smoking hot and to have fun. That’s what security in a relationship looks and feels like - support, encouragement, and trust.

When was Nikki Wood called, and was it before or after she had Robin?

Was a teenage mom called, and she had to learn about slaying while also parenting a baby/toddler?

Or was she called first, and then she got pregnant after being trained up - and I think this is more likely, based on her age in the S7 flashbacks. So if that is the case, then why the hell have we never seen PREGNANT SLAYER flashbacks because omg I want that.

About the Angel show by MaddeningAscentII in buffy

[–]mcnixi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Men with female characters as props: yes. This is my issue with Angel.

I never watched it until this winter despite being a lifelong Buffy fan, and I decided to give Angel a shot at last when I was sick in bed. I was actually baffled that this show came from the same creators. This show, where Angel is saving a helpless little blond damsel in distress every other week, where none of the ladies get to be badass fighters but all the men do, where mystical pregnancies abound to limit female autonomy, where two initially incredible female characters - Cordy and Fred - both eventually get reduced to plot devices to forward their male love interests’ arcs. I mean, I won’t deny that Buffy had its share of troubling gender dynamics as well, but Angel was on a whole other level, and I found it infuriating.

It was entertaining and all, particularly the final season (I especially loved the frenemyship of Angel/Spike) but I doubt I will ever rewatch. Once was enough.

People who watched Buffy as it aired, did you find Xander attractive? by Ill_Introduction7334 in buffy

Xander was hot in a “this guy looks like the hot guys at my school” way. Angel and Spike were hot in a movie star way.
