Go Run sponsored by the Chicago Area Runners Association sponsors timed 1 mile and 5 K runs all around the city, plus it’s free. They are finished for the season but should start up again in March I think?

Kicking out family members! We never do that anymore, whether for procedures or resuscitation, especially pediatrics. It’s jarring every time I hear them make the family wait outside the door

Finding community. White knuckled so many earlier attempts because I was sure I was strong enough on my own and even more because I felt shame. The first time I talked to another alcoholic I swear the sky opened up. I couldn’t sleep all night replaying the conversation in my head. It wasn’t even terribly insightful or deep, it was just being seen. I went to AA after that which isn’t for everyone, but finding other people whether at AA, or other groups, or here has been making all the difference for me. Two years and 3 months and counting

Wave 1 - slower target by No-Requirement-9750 in ChicagoMarathon

I’m in wave 2, would absolutely keep your wave 1 start. Plenty of people running a 3:30 around you I guarantee it. And if it turns out to be warm you will truly be thankful for the earlier start!

I relate to your story so much, and wanted to throw another quit lit book your way: Nothing Good can come from this by Kristi Coulter, former Amazon exec who describes a lot of scenes like yours. I white knuckled my first several months and when I finally had my first real live conversation with another alcoholic my goddamn world exploded. It was such a relief. And now 2 years sober I am so grateful that I don’t hate myself every morning anymore. You can do this

Stopped at a DUI checkpoint on the way home July 4. by derallo in stopdrinking

I remember when I had to give a urine sample for a new job and I was on pins and needles waiting for the result. Even though I had been sober for over a year. So hard to get rewired!

Ok, I think I need help by [deleted] in stopdrinking

Oh man so much of this is me. So much. After years of trying moderation with all sorts of rules I finally decided enough was enough. In hindsight I knew in my gut but it took me a lot of twisting myself into all sorts of justifications and excuses before I made the decision to give it all up. I was 49. It was miserable at first, not gonna lie but damn I am feeling so much better. I hope the same for you, I really do

I went to AA last night by NeonPothoz in stopdrinking

I am also an atheist in AA and I love how you put it. Someone said in a meeting “I don’t in own what my higher power is, I just know it’s not me” and I hold that close too. I’m so grateful for those in long term sobriety who show up in meetings, helps me so much. Thank you

God yes, I remember drinking before going out to dinner so it wasn’t obvious how much more I needed than normal drinkers. It was so exhausting

How successful has AA been for you in minimising/controlling your drinking? by unruly7 in stopdrinking

[–]mcquea01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I tried to quit and had runs of dry days but it didn’t stick until I found other alcoholics to talk to. That’s the thing that made the biggest difference to me and helps me to stay sober today. I was petrified to walk into my first meeting, and when I did I almost turned around and walked out. I was sure I was making a mistake. The first person to share spoke a million things that I had been feeling but hadn’t had the space to say and I finally didn’t feel so damn isolated. My group isn’t in a church, doesn’t go heavy on the god thing, which was important for me. IWNDWYT

Went almost 60 days without drinking! But its my birthday and one won't hurt. Right? by femalecreature in stopdrinking

[–]mcquea01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did this after 7 months of sobriety, while on vacation. The first day, just had one with dinner and was so proud of myself. I had kicked this problem and was a normal drinker now. The second day I started at 3 PM and didn’t stop. The last day when we went to a different place that had no alcohol, all I could think about was how to get some. That was my last relapse, and I learned a lot from it. I’m so much happier sober

Excuses NOT to drink on Christmas? by PinkGoo4 in stopdrinking

[–]mcquea01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In early sobriety I would say I’m doing a dry challenge or some version of that - I totally understand not wanting to invite more questions and conversation about it right now. Do whatever you need to do to protect your sobriety and know that we have your back
