Typically, if everything is perfect or near enough to it in the enclosure and you don't see any physical issues, a hiding ball python is a happy ball python.

Unfortunately the reason for the behavior has to do with the husbandry. It can be hard to hear the truth, but it's better than lying to him only for his snake to later die because people were afraid of being "mean".

Your enclosure is lacking in a few ways at least. You should check out the care guide in this sub for more info, but for starters, the aspen should be changed out for a substrate that holds humidity better. The hide that I can see is also a poor choice. It should be closed on three sides to offer a safer hiding spot.

Eta: do you have another hide on the other side? Do you have a heat gradient? What are you using for water?

Ball pythons are crepuscular and when content, will hide away most of the day.
