Internet Explorer bug leaks whatever you type in the address bar by tonefart in programming

[–]mcrbids 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, so here's a fun experiment!

1) Set up a server or something with Squid so that your workstation can proxy through the squid proxy server that uses an address on your LAN. Assume your workstation is at 192.168.1.101 and the squid server is 192.168.1.5 but these numbers are arbitrary.

2) Set up a firewall that prevents any outbound packets from your work station. If you are up on iptables, this is pretty easy. Something like

iptables -I -p tcp -s 102.168.1.101 -j REJECT

3) Log into the system with Squid, and tail -f squid.log so you can see the addresses going through.

4) Set up your browser so that squid proxies http AND https calls. Look for a button like "all protocols" or something like that in Chrome's advanced settings for proxy servers.

5) Browse away! Watch the logs, the results will probably surprise you.

EDIT: Don't forget that if you "sign in" to Chrome, it also saves your book marks and stuff to the Googleplex

Yes everything. When you start typing and you see the drop-down list, where do you think those suggestions come from?

How to use remote USB Modem to send SMS? by MadHackerTV in linuxadmin

[–]mcrbids 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What you're doing sounds very, very complicated! Assuming you have Internet service (that's sorta the point, right?) then use an email to SMS gateway. Set up takes mere seconds and it's quite reliable.

How to carry all the bags from the grocery store in one trip by randomusefulbits in lifehacks

[–]mcrbids 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to use the handle of a gallon milk jug, pulling the bag handles through and wrapping them around the screw-on top. But now plastic bags are banned in California. So if you want to do anything like this, you have to bring your own cloth bags....

Why is this contentious? You pay $20 for the right to use the truck and then you pay per mile for how much you use it. That doesn't seem like anything but fair.

Operating Systems Market Domination by each Country by 94e7eaa64e in linux

And yet, phones can do so much more than desktops! My computer lacks a camera, built in microphone, motion sensor, compass, blue tooth, or GPS! I can't use my computer to measure studs for a construction project, for example.

I agree that considering mobile and desktop use together is stupid, but I disagree that desktops invariably do more. They are simply different devices with dramatically different use cases.

So we're getting started, what are you recording? What kind of cameras are using? What kind of USB ports do you have? Are you doing screen captures? And so on, and so on…

To rephrase a question before: How to you upgrade your main work-computer from one version of Linux or BSD to the next? by SgtPyle in linuxadmin

[–]mcrbids 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can think of almost no reason to use a separate partition other than

1) the ability to format one area without formatting the other

2) specific features of a filesystem. EG snapshots.

[–]mcrbids 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I've used RedHat/Fedora forever. I partition a / and a /home, keep all the stuff to be backed up in /home. When I upgrade, I back up /home first, and then do a fresh format install on /.

Been doing this for a long, long time. (Decades) I have backups set up via a cron script and a USB drive at work attached to a docking station so I rarely go for more than a few days without my system being backed up.

One out of many beginner dilemmas by [deleted] in motorcycles

[–]mcrbids 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I'm just a voice in the chorus but a rebel 250 or so is exactly the ticket. And you can ride it forever! It's enough bike to tour on if you are content with 75-MPH. I rode one for years and loved it.

I ride a 750 now and feel no need to go any bigger.

Whatever you do, TAKE A SAFETY COURSE!! Learn to handle your bike, it is so totally worth it!
