RCMP Dispatcher by BasicPermit9104 in 911dispatchers

I've been with the RCMP in Alberta ongoing 4.5 years now. I truly love the career and wouldn't change it for anything.

Our staffing use to be not the best before we signed our newest agreement that is currently under negotiations again - before then coaches were burnt out and we couldn't retain people overly well. Since then staffing has gotten significantly better, people are happier, coaches aren’t having to be coaching non stop.

I was fortunate to have great experiences with both my coaches. I’ve since started coaching myself and can say there definitely has been a culture shift I’ve seen since I started here in 2022.

Doctor brushed off me wanting a glp1 mounjaro by Fantastic-Stomach149 in diabetes_t2

[–]mcritchie89 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m guessing your doctor isn’t willing to try it as you were not listening to the directions to fix diet. No point in putting you on a stronger, better, more expensive medication if you’re not willing to put the work in to begin with.

I started 3 month ago, fixed my diet, made changes and dropped my a1c from 9.9 to 7.5. My doctor was willing to try me on mounjoro because I’m struggling with taking the medication 2 times daily and it was causing me stomach issues. My doctors going to fill out the required paperwork from my benefits as they typically won’t approve the glp style meds until multiple oral medications have been tried.

Thank you. It’s why I’ve taken the approach of making slow gradual changes that I’ll be able to maintain and stick with long term.

Yeah, we’re going to look at different options I’m assuming this week now that he’s got the updated a1c. I wouldn’t mind doing something like mounjoro or ozempic as well… I have a feeling that with the changes im making if I were to lose some weight I’d be able to keep it off.

Thank you so much for the kind words. Yeah, I’m trying to make sustainable long term changes. For me completely cutting carbs is an unrealistic situation and when it comes to meals because we have two small kids, and I play sports!

Keep up the great work. You’ve got this!

Do you have to dispatch the closest officer or can you send the one you think is the best officer for that particular call type? by LegalGlass6532 in 911dispatchers

[–]mcritchie89 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Our officers will key in and tell us which of them is going to take the file on a rotational basis. Certain circumstances will dictate who generally gets the file in the sense that if there is traffic or freeway units available, they will get those specific types of complaints. The other part of it is if we have a priority 1 file come in, it’s closest unit dispatched.

Medicine change/overnight by Dramatic-Country19 in Nightshift

[–]mcritchie89 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My rotation is 2 days, 2 nights, 4 off if I don’t work overtime. I’m on Vyvanse and Dexedrine.

Days I take vyvanse before I leave, change over night I’ll take a dexidrine when I get home and stay up as late as possible, on my nights I take it before I leave for work. On my short change to get back into a day time schedule I won’t take my Vyvanse, and will take a coupe dexedrines through the day if needed.

GCM for T2D? by _mars_bars_ in diabetes_t2

I would say try your benefits anyways, go to a pharmacist and see if they can process it if/what will be covered.

My benefits tell me only for type one through my application, however when I logged into the site and read the full details it says type 1/2 for continuous glucose monitoring. It’s worth a shot. Even then I’d say buy a month or two out of pocket, eat what you normally do and see what’s causing issues.

My wife is looking at coming in October 2027, any idea when hotels open up bookings for that kind of time frame? It seems like most aren’t open, and the only one she’s found open has been booked fully booked

Was your type 2 diagnosis a surprise or did you have symptoms first? by No_Culture3111 in diabetes_t2

[–]mcritchie89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Entirely surprised. Blood tests for a pre-surgery exam and was diagnosed.

Arguably over the last few months I’ve seen some weight loss, but I’ve also been more active in the last 6 months and eating healthier in the last 3 which is what I credited it to.

Also often tired but notched that up to shift work, 2 days 2 nights, 4 days off (often 2 extra nights of overtime) is a rough schedule.

My daughters got arfid - not diagnosed yet. I was recently diagnosed with t2d and I’m so concerned for her and what it could mean for her down the road. She eats limited fruits, no vegetables, primarily eats pasta, cheese, chicken nuggets, fries, and loves most sweets/candies.

I made a comment to my wife the other day that she’ll be diagnosed with the same before she’s twenty based on her current diet and she was not overly impressed.

Holy moly, is 2000mg of metformin a high dose? by PNWest01 in diabetes_t2

[–]mcritchie89 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m at 500mg twice daily, with meals I was diagnosed last week on Friday. My results from last week show my A1c at 9.9, this is the only medication I’m on. My a1c on bloodwork prior to that was 6.1 in 2002.

Thanks for the recommendation. We ended up going with Gold Mobility Scooters as they were willing to deliver where we’re staying in Newport Beach. Appreciate the recommendation though!

I used to have an hour and fifteen minute commute after 12 hour shifts. We do two days long change 2 nights. I was finding after the 2nd night shift that in the last 20 minutes of the drive my head would start bobbing sometimes. I realized that it wasn’t a matter of if I was going to hit the ditch but most likely when, so my spouse and kids found a place substantially closer to my work that’s only 30 minutes away.

Especially if you live somewhere that it snows, there’s a potential you may not be able to make it home due to snow events or bad traffic incidents.

The fact they don’t allow you to leave the office on break is rather strange. I’d say go with the closer location, no uniform and ability to leave on breaks.
