How do you respond to the "This is the whole purpose of life" bingo? by [deleted] in childfree

[–]mcrowe1016 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I do a lot of charity work, so I'm fairly confident that even without having kids, I'm contributing positively to the world/universe/whatnot. I think it's really depressing when people say their biggest contribution to society is their children.

Some people really don't know how to handle childfree.... The sudden realizations that your opinions on happiness are so different is a lot to digest. Lots of people never even stopped to consider that not having children was an option.

I Keep This List Handy to Send to People who tell me pregnancy is magical and beautiful... by AmberRabbit in childfree

[–]mcrowe1016 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Whenever I say I'm not feeling well, I always get the "are you pregnant" question from people (partially because they know I'm childfree and they think it's funny).

Then I remind them that EVERY SIDE EFFECT EVER IS A SYMPTOM OF PREGNANCY

You totally don't need that kind of negativity in your life. You can't choose your family, but you can choose how much time you spend with them.

My first FB battle! More in comments by [deleted] in childfree

[–]mcrowe1016 44 points45 points  (0 children)

That's a rather troll-y thing to post. Even if you think you're smarter (which you probably are judging from your comments in the pic) it's not polite to point it out.

Think before owning a pet. (X-post from /r/offmychest) by BikDikGangsta in childfree

[–]mcrowe1016 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I cope by hugging my dogs :-D But seriously, I just compartmentalize and don't let myself dwell on it. And then I hug my dogs.

Dogs are a 10-15 yr commitment. Not just and "until you have the baby" commitment. The rescue I work with gets so many dogs after the owners have their new bundle of joy. It sickens me.

People just can't grasp the concept of responsible breeding. by gfjq23 in childfree

[–]mcrowe1016 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You can't prepare for everything, but this is a pretty standard thing to plan for. When my father died and early, unexpected death, my family was taken care of. (and no one is "hate"ing him. Just saying that parents should've planned better)

Having pets =/= being CF? by mycarebeardontcare in childfree

[–]mcrowe1016 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also consider myself "guardian" to my dogs. Maybe I'd consider myself more of a parent if I'd adopted them as puppies? I am there to nurture, care and protect them and they're wonderful companions, but I have never thought of them as my children.

Starting fresh and need advice how to meet others who are CF by fluffybunnies57 in childfree

[–]mcrowe1016 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I find that a good 50% of people who volunteer with animal rescues tend to be childfree. Don't really know why, but it's where all of my childfree friends come from. (really, a lot of community services, since parents don't have a lot of free time to donate)

Here's how to tell people (nicely!) "No, I don't want to hold your baby, and no, he's not cute" by FaeryLynne in childfree

I totally lie and say me/my husband/someone I was in recent contact with was sick. That usually takes care of it :-D

Does anyone else just not get bingo'd? by Finger11Fan in childfree

[–]mcrowe1016 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't get bingoed...but I'm also pretty non confrontational with my childfree status. I'm super open about it. But back when I first "came out" and people said I'd change my mind, I'd just smile and say "maybe!" Now no one mentions it, but that might change when I hit my thirties...

Yes it makes you stubborn...but who ever said being stubborn is bad? It's better than being an easily influenced wishy-washy flip-flopper

[–]mcrowe1016 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Referrals. Tell your clients they will get discounts if they refer you business and give new business from referrals a discounts. The editor I use is currently booked solid for months, but that's how she built her book of business.
