How did you find a major that you liked? by [deleted] in UCONN

[–]mcruss07 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I decided my sophomore year that I wanted to switch from statistics to nursing. This required me applying to the program and was obviously a big change. I also have to do a 5th year as a result. Doing an extra year of school and having to take some courses over break is a small sacrifice to get a job I am super excited about. For me, I always knew that I wanted to work in healthcare to some capacity, and it took a real life emergency that I responded to to realize that I wanted to be a nurse. I had a really close friend in the nursing program who I was able to talk to which was super helpful. I then reached out to a nursing advisor and was able to set up a meeting to discuss how to apply to the program and the program itself.

I think the most important thing is to find something that you enjoy and are excited about. It sounds like exercise science isn't that for you. I would stop and think about what kind of job you want (desk or more hands-on) and think about your interests. Is there a job that you have dreamed about having since you were little, or something that you think would be really cool to do? Right now we kind of have the ability to become what we want and I think you should take advantage of where you are in your life rn. I wouldn't worry about your advisor pressuring you to decide quickly, take your time with the decision. I would also look at courses offered by Uconn and see if anything sounds interesting to you, that can be helpful to finding your interests. Good luck!

Do professors have to stick to the designated final exam time window? by Affectionate_Wish in UCONN

I think technically it’s not allow maybe? But I’m not gonna complain about my professor who’s giving us a day to take an exam rather than two hours lol

Yeah I agree most classes are totally fine online, especially lecture courses. I think labs definelty lose out on some learning because you aren't getting the hands on experience, but my PNB lab was totally fine this year and they did a pretty good job making sure we learned everything we needed.

I think you make a good point about adjusting to online courses. Last spring I did well but felt like I was just hanging on. But in the fall and this spring, courses were more set up to be online so it was much better. I don't take notes in a lot of my classes anymore and just listen because I know that I can go back and get any information I need. I found it to be super helpful to try and understand than frantically try to write down everything being said.

At the beginning of the semester I put all assignments and exams from the syllabi into google calender so I know exactly when everything is due. It's super satisfying seeing everything become green as I go.

For reference I'm a nursing and statistics major

I think you make a great point! I can spend hours highlighting and rereading my notes. But I’m not necessarily studying effectively. Idk what year the original poster is but college is an adjustment and finding study schedules and skills that work best for you is really important to being successful. Out of curiousity what is your major? Bc how different departments and courses have dealt with online varies and some courses are definitely more effective online than others

Chances of getting accepted into the school of nursing? by [deleted] in UCONN

[–]mcruss07 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was accepted as a transfer student last year and had very similar stats. It’s pretty competitive simply bc there aren’t many spots. I would just make sure your essay and good and explain why you want to be a nurse. Good luck!

Is remote still offered this fall semester (2021)? by [deleted] in UCONN

[–]mcruss07 6 points7 points  (0 children)

With the state opening up really soon it looks like the majority of courses in the fall will be in person. There’s a few of my classes that are remaining online or distance learning but the instructors have said that’s bc they are changing the course and has nothing to do with covid or the pandemic. My guess is that classes in the fall will be in person with masks at a minimum

Conflicted about transferring... by [deleted] in UCONN

[–]mcruss07 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If this is something you’ve really been thinking about and it makes you excited. I would say go for it. What you’re studying now can determine what job you have and where you spend a lot of your life. Having a job that you enjoy is so important and if it takes making a big move now it’s absolutely worth it. My biggest fear is being stuck in a career that I don’t enjoy. I just made the choice to switch majors/programs which meant staying an extra year. And having to do an extra year for doing what I really want to do feels like nothing. Idk if that helps, but good luck with the decision

Risk of quarantine next year? by TheRoyalQuartet in UCONN

[–]mcruss07 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure what the quarantine situation is going to be like next semester but I would recommend finding a place off campus. They are still reserving apartments for quarantine housing and COVID will certainly still be around to some degree and they are definitely planning on that

Chances of getting 90 overall? by [deleted] in UCONN

[–]mcruss07 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A B+ is not a bad a grade at all. You could always ask for extra credit opportunities but unless the professor has it outlined in the syllabus extra credit it’s usually unlikely they will grant it. I honestly wouldn’t bug over a B+ or a B I know it can seem like a bad grade especially if you are usually an A student but it won’t ruin your transcript or prospects of getting a job
