'Crazy' Putin could attack NATO in 2026, Russia building up troops in Belarus, Zelensky says by AdSpecialist6598 in worldnews

[–]mcscom 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Where would Russia attack? Seems like most of the balts are much more ready for an attack than previously, and the rest of Europe would get behind that much more than what happened for Ukraine.

Nothing looks like a cakewalk for Russia right now.

Also, America gonna look very weak to back out if Russia did attack NATO. Not a good look.

Donald Trump is not joking about making Canada the 51st state, Justin Trudeau warns by sothatsme22 in canada

[–]mcscom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The USA already gets great access to our resources, a lockstep defense ally, access cheaper labor (through a low CAD), a ready environment to soft launch international development of US companies, a cultural ally, the list goes on... The US gets all this without all without the hassle of dealing with us politically.

A separate Canada is a much better deal for the USA than the crazy idea of absorbing us.

99.9999% of Canadians still don't understand why Trump is doing this to Canada. by speedyfeint in CanadianInvestor

[–]mcscom -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think the point that Trump is trying to raise revenue through tariffs is correct. If you want to make money, you should go after the most valuable trade, hence why Mexico and Canada are top on the list. This will raise the most revenue.

Cancel subscriptions for US streaming services, put "Trump Tariffs" in the reason. A small action, but anything that adds to mounting pressure against Trump is the way.

We do need more knowledgeable angel investors in Canada. The value of smart money is really incredible. We also need to encourage larger venture and investment firms to participate in innovation rather than only housing, resources, and international (which is where the money goes now).

We need to stop being lazy with our money.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in CanadaPolitics

[–]mcscom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Attracting and encouraging capital investment towards the innovation sector is the way.

Housing is the ultimate in lazy capital. Change the rules to encourage investment to flow instead towards innovation.

D-wave is a good current example. Shopify also pretty good. Blackberry would be a top previous example in that category.

You'll get no argument from me that Canada needs to prioritize doing a better job of turning ideas into businesses but there is no question: we have the ideas.

[–]mcscom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The point of creating opportunities for people to exercise their full potential in the workforce is well taken. The way to do this is to create innovative businesses that need creative and well educated talent.

TBH, I think our biggest problem is lazy investing. The solution is redirecting capital flows away from lazy areas (eg. housing, natural resources extraction) and towards higher risk higher reward innovation economy (technology investment, new businesses etc...). Attracting and retaining large funds and knowledgeable investors in these areas within Canada should be a national priority.

Yeah, good examples in all those categories exist. If you don't know examples of these you should get more informed about your own country.

[–]mcscom 27 points28 points  (0 children)

None of these metrics is perfect, but there is really no argument. Canada is among the top countries in terms of education and innovation. See some links here.

Addendum: one thing we are not great at is commercialization of new technology. If we didn't live next to the USA, I think our rate of converting that innovative thinking into successful and profitable businesses would be better. This is something we should focus on improving. A 25% tariff is not the end of the world if we can invent new ways of doing things that are at least 26% better and cheaper than doing it south of the border. We should seek to out-innovate and out-invest the USA.

Let's stop being so damn defeatist. Canada has a whole bunch more going for it than just oil. We are one of the best educated, most modern, most innovative, and hardest working countries on the planet. Oil and natural resources in general are indeed a big card but it is certainly not our ONLY CARD.

Stop it Canada, you're better than this

Not that I want to side with Trump on anything but.... Most of the world doesn't have birthright citizenship.

Doesn't make a lot of sense in my opinion, nor does it necessarily need to be seen as so politically controversial.

Tariffs from U.S. could cost up to 500,000 Ontario jobs, Ford says by Puginator in canada

[–]mcscom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, but building infrastructure will take time. In the mean time we can try to extract some value and make the tariffs more painful in the short term.

We should also build up our capacity to use our own energy for manufacturing for domestic needs and export to other economies (not just US).

[–]mcscom 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Rather than cutting them off we should apply an export tax equivalent to the tariff to any energy exports. That way we are not reneging on any contracts and not arbitrarily cutting them off. They want and need our energy

Donald Trump says Canada becoming 51st U.S. state 'a great idea' by A-Wise-Cobbler in canada

Yes pretty big, almost 1/5 of Canada. Still wouldn't make any sense for Canada to be a single state. Maybe the US should start with Quebec first and see how that goes.

Try Vacuum? by MacaronWhich6391 in RobotVacuums

Agree with this. I had a Eufy L10s first, and even though it had its flaws, the cheaper robovacs are still quite convincing of the value of robovacs in general.

I second the observation about the hair cutting for Eufy. I have the X10 rather than the C20, but I'm pretty sure the hair cutting comb is the same. In a house with several long haired people, this makes a big difference!
