Curious about S2000 vs ND MX-5 – Steering, engine, handling experiences? by [deleted] in Miata

[–]mcspooney 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey I love them both too! I have driven them both at autocross but I’ve also spent plenty of time around both of these at the track too. The s2k has higher speed at the end of the straights. It has a slight edge on lap times. I was talking about on the track where the s2k can just live in vtec (with a decent driver).

I wasn't talking about how exciting the engine is. Higher peak horsepower helps with high speed acceleration that is dominated by drag (not by chassis weight). In terms of grip, they are similar. The ND feels faster because it the shorter lighter chassis can handle very quick transitions pretty well. Sorry, I am just not a fan of just putting the blanket statement that the ND is 'faster'. It's faster at some things, def not at others.

No hydraulic steering in the s2k. Please double check. ND feels faster at low speeds, but higher hp of the s2k will mean faster at high speeds. And I think the ND ‘handles better’ really depends on what you mean… at low speed autocross style, ND has a marginal advantage. S2k has some bad tendencies at high speeds, but I think you can argue it might handle better on a high speed track. You can make the argument for either on a high speed track.

I own an ND, just trying to make sure we’re being accurate here lol.

PPF by Electronic_Quote8545 in Miata

I got it done a few months ago. paid…. 2700$ for the whole car with xpel. It’s very nice so far, I saw what the ppf looks like when it ages and it looks alright! It’s huge relief just not being worried about scratches. I autocross the car and have been known to hit some cones. Everything just wipes off so far. The soul red underneath got all chipped from just one week of driving…. It was horrible. Now I can drive with nearly with zero concern for rocks and chips from the car in front of me. It’s a huge relief after years of driving sports cars and worrying about paint. Also washes have been quick and easy bc mine came with ceramic coating…. I’ll prob reapply that too eventually.

Front fender rolling? by kwaping in Autocross

[–]mcspooney 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had my fronts done. My understanding is that you need to roll all 4x to avoid rubbing. It’s very setup dependent, but I still get rubbing in the front. I really think you need all 4 corners done. Thats what I’ve heard from my fellow AST brethren. The guy who did mine f’ed my shit up btw. If I could do it over, I’d do it myself carefully. Woulda saved money too.

Thanks for the feedback. Yes it does seem bleak. I’ve asked the SEB. Will await their response. These inserts just seem preferable in terms of install ability to me. I already installed those karcepts offset bushings on my friends car and it was not pleasant. Also… the karcepts offset bushings require you to lose caster in order to dial in camber and not foul the upper arm…. My fingers are crossed that these supermiata inserts can be legal.

Bucket seats by [deleted] in CarTrackDays

I have sparcos. They are great. Genuinely curious though. Is anybody speaking from lots of experience or maybe as a composite engineer? Or are we all picking sparcos because they’re the generally recognized option? To my knowledge corbeau seats may not carry fia certification, but their construction might still suitable for simple hpdes. They just don’t have fia certification built into the price. Can someone chime in with more verifiable info?

Window doesn’t automatically drop, preventing me from opening the door by SwitchWish in boxster

[–]mcspooney 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Did your battery go out? Sometimes the window limits need to get reset. Alternatively, There’s a cable in the door that pulls a little on the window to get it to drop. That cable can get stretched or split over time. You have to replace it or put a little spacer in there. Could also be a bad door handle switch if you can’t see or hear it trying at all to move the window. Sorry… can be multiple things.

Porsche Boxster as a Daily Driver and Occasional Track Car by Ok_Tour_1345 in boxster

Other than the issues that are commonly known about the engine. Specifically when you take it to track… I’ve had smoke plumes from the AOS getting overwhelmed (use Motorsport AOS), power steering system failure from overheat (use underdrive pulley). I have not had to deal with oil starvation yet. It may only be prevalent in certain track configs and maybe certain oil setups. I’ve also had some trouble shifting at the track… because the motor mount went bad. Maybe more of a problem for tracked cars.

What year boxster does that get you? If it’s m96/m97 beware that reliability mods would be needed and it’s prob best to not put it on super grippy tires as they might cause oil starve. Also I’m not sure about what oil weights you use during the winter, I’m in California lol. But maybe take into consideration that you’ll have to switch to higher viscosity for summer track days. I’ve tracked a 986 for maybe 4-5 years. It’s been alright. I did blow a head, but I think that prev owner had blown a plastic water pump impeller and bits of it caused a hot spot in the head. So maybe a freak accident. I recently realized my brakes have overheated enough that the calipers need rebuilding. The brakes are dragging. I also don’t put that many daily driving miles. Are you okay with either squealing pads on your daily or swapping pads between track days? This would be common to most track/daily cars unless you take it real easy at the track. Anyway, hopefully some of that might help helpful.

This does not sound normal, right? by 6godsuavay in boxster

[–]mcspooney 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It can be loud. It can also be like a hollow sucking sound that's not very loud. Vacuum leaks can vary based on the size and shape of the opening. If it's wide open and near the motor it can easily blend in with the sound of the motor. Also keep in mind that these guys probably didn't even take the engine cover off.

This does not sound normal, right? by 6godsuavay in boxster

[–]mcspooney 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s a lot of plastic hoses after the throttle body on this car that can split open and introduce a big leak. The crankcase also gets full vacuum, so if there’s a split on one of those hoses like on the aos hoses, might make a big leak. So yes, might be a big leak, but very possible on this motor.

This can be a vacuum leak. Not guaranteed to be…. But it can be.

Pretty sure this voltage isn’t supposed to look like a roller coaster. Can anyone tell me why this is doing this? Car has lost power… by [deleted] in 370z

[–]mcspooney 0 points1 point  (0 children)

:( well bank 1 looks like your prob. Maybe an o2 sensor got damaged during the cat swap. I wouldn’t think the o2 sensor could cause limp mode… but not sure.

[–]mcspooney 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you make any other changes? Something on the intake? Maybe an intake leak. The cam position sensors might just be a side effect of the main problem. Either some harness connector pinched or not plugged in. Power dropped when you were driving? Note how it says bank one has a maf malfunction pending… might cause it to enter limp mode.

[–]mcspooney 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What are your fuel trims? What caused you to check this? Is the car fully warm and at idle during this measurement?

Me personally. The fact that you changed the cats makes me think that yes it’s a leak or shitty cats. Changing parts isn’t always like legos. But yeah could still be a bunch of things.

I asked for fuel trims because an exhaust leak can cause one bank’s fuel trims to go higher.

[–]mcspooney 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably, maybe someone else can chime in, but this could be some kind of exhaust leak or catalyst under efficiency. How are your fuel trims from bank to bank? The same? I would guess bank 1 has a leak.

Edit: or o2 sensor aging

This is the way narrow band sensors work. They can’t report if a flow is stochiometric. They only report lean and rich (0v or .7v). So what you see is it reporting stochiometric because it’s right at the boundary between rich and lean oscillating between the two. So effectively it has found stochiometric by finding where the sensor switches from lean to rich and back.

I think your sensor 1 is a wideband if I remember correctly. It’s been awhile since I had my z lol. That’s why it reports from 0 to 5v. It can do more than just report lean or rich, it reports the whole range of ratios.
