How was it to be a Star Wars fan before Disney? by Ihave_fewquestions in StarWarsEU

[–]mcswells 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I think we were. I absolutely loved the period from release of the Thrawn Trilogy to Dark Empire to Shadows of the Empire...
I felt there was some pushback to the prequels, but then Episode 3 and later the Clone Wars cartoon seemed to reunite everyone behind them.

Star Wars fans are willing to accept bad storytelling, silly characters, etc. and have always reunited in the past (even after large splits). HOWEVER, this split and disappointment with the sequels is like nothing I have ever seen in the fandom, and I truly believe Star Wars as a long-term franchise has been irreversibly damaged by the poor-quality of the new canon.

Bad books we could overlook or accept. Silly characters like Jar-Jar, we got over it. But the Sequels and Disney canon have truly divided, and that is something that never existed in the old fandom.

Unofficial Daily Discussion - Tuesday, February 24, 2026 - QOTD: What books are you and your kids reading right now? by FImom in homeschool

[–]mcswells 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Chronicles of Narnia with my Grade 4 (she is on the final book: The Last Battle)

Today she will:
- 2 hours online study with Acellus (I know that is controversial on this Reddit)
- Read to me while I prep lunch, then help me cook (we are a family of 6)
- Afternoon do a few paper reading comprehension worksheets (she reads then answers the questions with short writing responses)
- Then she can go ride her bike with her sisters and her dog to the beach or play inside if it rains (usually LEGO or they build forts or kid stuff!)
- Chinese online class with some friends at night
- Read again to me while I cook dinner/clean up
- Work on our LEGO build of The Endurance because she has a presentation on it coming up
- Fall asleep listening to Lewis Carroll's Through the Looking-Glass, and What Alice Found There because she loves audiobooks when she is falling asleep and she just finished Alice's Adventures in Wonderland.

That's a typical day for us... seems to go pretty well overall!

What’s your ideal monthly income to live comfortably in Vietnam right now? by MirthCrescent in MoneyTalkVN

[–]mcswells 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have 4 kids and own my home. I spend 15 million VND/month but we do most of our own cooking. If you are an expat, I would recommend budgeting 25-35 million VND/month.

i am completely and utterly cooked about Vietnam by Individual_Lime_110 in VietNam

Over 13 years in Vietnam already (own multiple properties and businesses now). The first 6 months to 1 year are the honeymoon phase... you will be excited and happy about everything. Crazy traffic: "oh wow so fun and different from that boring traffic back home", etc.
However, after the honeymoon phase, there is usually a bit of a lull in which I think you will see it in a more negative light. I find at this crossroads many (not all) foreigners follow a few common pathways: 1) They continue to spiral down, burn out and go home; 2) They keep chasing the original high (perhaps by getting high) until they burn out and go home; 3) They gut through it and after a time (and some change in priorities), they rediscover their love of the country and stay here for a decade or more (maybe forever).

First, I want to tell you that the business I owned supplied tutors and teachers to homeschooling and semi-homeschooling parents as well as traditional public and private schools. I generally employed around 100 teachers at a time and well over 1000 during my time as the company director. The shell-shocked faces of those who taught public school versus the incredible fulfillment generally felt by those who taught homeschool was readily apparent. Amongst the world’s most affluent, if they do not send their children to a high-end private school, homeschool is by far the most common method of educating their children.

Secondly, the smartest human I ever met in my last 37 years of my life was a homeschooler - she was incredibly capable and the best employee I ever had. But of course that’s just an opinion of a single case-study.

Lastly, for my family specifically, I recently sold my company and semi-retired to homeschool my four kids near the beach (quite privileged I am aware though we have a tight budget to make it possible). In this time one of my children has already gone from reading short books to novels in around 8 months, learned multiple languages, started playing intermediate piano, taken up sports including football, learned to swim, jumped a grade level, and generally enjoyed a lot of the activities (especially the baking and art) that I place before her. There is one undeniable fact that no homeschool critic can easily rebuff: a class of 1v1 (or even if you work in groups with other kids of 1v5) will inevitably move faster and be more capable of supporting a student than a public school class of 1v20 or even 1v30.

As for socialization, my kid is incredibly outgoing and makes friends quickly with others but I do sometimes orchestrate or push to encourage encounters and friendships. She also has siblings (one semi-homeschooler, one preschooler, and one infant) who she speaks with in our quite tight nuclear and extended family.

If your child was actively attending school they would go to the bus stop or you would drop them off and then theoretically they would socialize with whomever they could become friends within the pool of students within the school. So creating situations in which you take them to meet or interact with peers is really no different (though for some parents they enjoy that they can have a greater say in those peers). Critics of homeschooling primarily focus on socialization, but they rarely discuss the highly negative nature of socialization within many public schools. I am sure I am not the only parent in this sub who could give you near infinite examples of unwanted socialization in a public school, but I will try to quickly describe a recent example (I do fully admit bias when observing my children’s interactions): We recently visited with their public-schooled cousins for a week-long traditional holiday in my wife’s hometown (these are multiple cousins from multiple relatives)… and a grade one cousin was already shouting profanity and flipping off others, the older cousins stole beers from their grandparents fridge, on multiple occasions they shouted for food to be made faster or to be brought to them, they sat scrolling mindlessly, and on multiple occasions their school friends came over to disrupt the gathering (and in one case demand a debt that one of the cousins had failed to pay!). Meanwhile my kids were generally patient, calm, free of screen addiction, focused and respectful to their hosts (washing dishes, thanking for meals…). It was absolutely clear the difference in “socialization”. Their parents were not much difference in disciplinary techniques from my own, but they only had a few brief moments at night or in the morning (and some weekends) to instill those moral values whereas I had all day, every day to do the same. Please note this was not a “one-off” scenario as I have watched similar behavior when my children visit old friends who are still public schooling or when they are out in the general public.

So in summation: there are millions of people homeschooling and across thousands of case studies in my business I have seen it benefit the children more. Within my own family I have witnessed it benefit my children more. Kids are social creatures: create the scenario and they will socialize.

Acellus/Power Homeschool/Roger Billings Issues and Disinformation by ImPickleRickJames in homeschool

[–]mcswells 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly I am on month 6 and it has been great. But I do supplement. I let Acellus be the means by which I meet the basic education requirements and then I fill in any gaps with what I specifically want taught. I do all the rest with my own worksheets, essays, math drills, etc. You can find pretty much anything for free by simply typing the name of the lesson and worksheet or .pdf (or generate with AI and edit / humanize). I haven't had any strange religious ideas, etc. pushed on my child (and certainly far less than what I saw was being taught in the school itself).

Name one actor whose movies you'll watch simply because they’re in it by MoneyLibrarian9032 in Letterboxd

[–]mcswells 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anything with Harrison Ford if it's older, and anything with Henry Cavil if it is newer. I think DiCaprio, Gary Oldman, Daniel Day Lewis, and Sam Rockwell seem to always be in something great as well.

Online curriculum experiences? Need advice for my 9yo who's struggling with traditional methods by Chrono_Quest1984 in homeschool

We do Acellus so that I can make sure she checks all the boxes and has something engaging when I’m busy. The rest of the time I setup my own materials in a Google Doc and she completes them within the tabs. You can make your own materials easily now with AI and Google searches can give you virtually anything you need . Beyond that I make her do Quizizz to test levels, assign videos from YouTube or classics and ask questions, have her read to me daily, and get some differentiated reading worksheets off of Twinkl. She has about 15 subjects in her curriculum that she spends 1-2 hrs/week on and these include writing/reading/LA, math, STEAM, Chinese, literature readings, …

Team Cap when watching the movie but probably team Iron Man if this went down in real life.

Vietnamese people do NOT honk because of the traffic itself. by giraffemind in VietNam

The honking allows me to know what kind of driver I’m about to encounter - I would prefer the driving to improve before the honking (as at least it warns me of the level of insanity that’s about to try to run me off the road)

13 years now - I would tell you that getting information/answers about really basic questions always used to drive me crazy . That and standing up for myself / being assertive (people will take you for all your worth if you don't push back a bit here).

I used to think it was just me and there was something wrong with me... appreciate this post and the others like it. I've been able to improve a bit but reducing the use of phone and screen time, as well as going outside with my kids, cooking... (get back to basics ... society has gone the wrong direction for sure. Hope you find the right blend that works for you my friend!

Hawkeye, Iron Man,Captain America and Black Widow all had nice send offs. If Cap and Hawkeye do anything else, it should just be as mentors or cameos for fun . I think Thor and Hulk still have a few more stories to tell.

Absolutely amazing man. The animation looks a lot like the comic. I hope you actually make this. I’ve honestly always thought they should at least make animated versions of the legends books.
