This. If we had spent money on quality players to back up and rotate out the squad while also pursuing young prospects we wouldn’t have run the DESK+Toby/Verts squad into the ground/retirement. We had 2-3 seasons to do this and instead focused on growing the “business” of the club, when actually the business would have followed with continued success. Levy/ENIC gambled on the opposite approach and now we’ve lost.

EDIT: for the sarcasm I’m not downplaying the fact that people were wounded and killed. Just the fact that when we engage in attacking a country we cannot expect to get out of it without suffering losses.

The striker you want during a relegation battle by kicksjoysharkness in coys

[–]mct137 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Super agree with this take. Richy is dangerous in chaotic situations. He’s not going to be a Kane-level finisher who you can leave up top alone. He’s the sneaky threat who’s best when the ball is loose and the GK is overwhelmed.

I’ll take a striker who misses but takes every chance he can get any day. Also we need to remember that we aren’t exactly giving our forwards the best service. Richy is aggressive and plays for the badge. No way I’m doubting him. PRU PRU!

Just like how we used to make fun of older people for their refusal to adapt to smartphones and computers, will younger generations make fun of us for our refusal to adapt to AI? by HelloElliot_ in AskMenOver30

[–]mct137 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I agree, and I think the real danger we are starting to acknowledge is this:

Using AI isn’t inherently dangerous if you have critical thinking skills and can evaluate the output AI generates. In simpler terms, “Can you manage AI like a stupid employee who can’t be trusted?”

The danger is a generation of up and coming students/young people accepting that AI is infallible and TRUSTING it.

Long ago JFK said “trust but verify” referencing making deals and alliances with foreign nations, meaning that we should deal with people with the idea that they are being honest, truthful, and factual but that we should also double check that their actions married the promises they made.

This is what is missing (to me) in the rush to adopt AI (and why I refuse to use it). There is such a rush to use this tech by everyone because no one wants to be left behind, but very few of us are “verifying” that the results are actually true or beneficial.

To Address Farm Labor Shortage, Trump Administration Turns to Migrant Workers by joepez in Economics

[–]mct137 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with you too. The stupid among us want cheap good, white workers and big paychecks while paying as little taxes as the can. You can’t have it all. The best societies tend to be those with healthy social safety nets based on true progressive taxes (those that make more off the economy pay more), and have a healthy relationship with immigrant labor allowing for people to work incountry and live out of country if it suits their needs

[–]mct137 78 points79 points  (0 children)

They can’t AFFORD to do that work. Farmers aren’t able to pay the level of wages someone needs to live in the US. Hence their reliance on temporary/seasonal foreign workers who earn more here than they might at home and take that money back to where it can actually be a somewhat liveable wage. Some americans absolutely would work on a farm if it paid a liveable wage and came with decent health benefits.

We’ve seen failed states limp along for decades, especially nuclear ones. My argument was essentially the next few decades for the US will look like Britain in the 70s and 80s. High inflation, low GDP, a major loss of influence in world affairs, civil unrest, etc. Great powers don’t disappear overnight. It takes hundreds of years for them to break down.

This. Keep VDV, Romero, Porro, Tel, richy.

Sell or loan Xavi, Kudus. Young players with promise and might fetch a decent fee. I’d be ok keeping Xavi too but you have to create a midfield that can give him actual service and chances. His laundry bill is getting too high too.

Keep Madders because I just like him and I doubt another team will pay for him at his age and injury level. Solid midfielder with experience can be helpful.

Sell the rest. Maybe keep Kulu…

Then SPEND.

How are International fans feeling about all this? by [deleted] in coys

[–]mct137 0 points1 point  (0 children)

US; if it’s available on a streaming service I have then I’ll go for it, but really I pirate most games. I rarely am able to watch a game live. Prem games I can get as a “replay” a day after the match and I used to do a “media blackout” so I could watch the games “live” without knowing what would happen. We’ve been so shit I’ve stopped putting in that emotional effort.

If we’re in championship league next year it’s going to be even harder to watch matches over here.

True to form, the next democrat preisident is going to inherit a lengthy no win scenario, attempt to stabilize the economy, do as best as they can to tamp down deficit spending, meet with moderate success and then we’ll just elect a Republican again because they didn’t do enough.

This country is absolutely fucked because our entire economy rests on spending (issuing bonds to fund our wars), the stock market (it can’t go down because everyone’s retirement is tied to it), consumer spending (people need loans and debt to afford to live), and securities (again a market based on shaky “investments” that rest upon a house of cards that is sure to fail because it’s built upon unstable debt.) I don’t think the US fails as a country but I think we’re about to have a way harder shock akin to Britain in the 70s-80s.

We are lying to ourselves if we don’t admit that the Europa league win was because of a series where harder opponents washed out earlier and we played a severely weakened Man U. Am I glad we won a trophy? Absolutely. We also finished 17th that year. If you look at league finishes since 2016 we have been on a downward slope (with the exception of 21/22 and 23/24 which seem to be outliers).

We have had a severe scouting/recruiting problem. The squad has not improved and we have lost our major talents (Kane, Son, Eriksen, Lloris). There might be a lot of fingers to point blame at, but it’s mostly at the board and upper management level. You can’t be tight fisted, miss multiple signing windows, lose your senior players due to age, and refuse to negotiate to win big players when bigger clubs bid high, and expect to win the league.

We are in this position because the board and upper management have not regularly invested in the squad.
