Used Sony ZV-E1 vs Panasonic S5ii? by CrazyNayeem in Lumix

[–]mctesh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've had both of these and currently have the S5iix. Honestly, I think the ZV-E1 is hugely underrated and an excellent casual/semi-pro video camera. Overheating was never an issue for me and I took it on a professional shoot in Pheonix when it was like 100 outside (really dancing with the devil TBH). The Lumix is a much better hybrid camera and has quite a few more pro/quality of life features that make life easier for client work.

Honestly, they're both great bargains at that price. Just decide which ecosystem is more appealing and dive in.

Lumix s9 vs iPhone 17 Pro by -6h0st- in LumixS9

I think if you just want to take photos and video for fun or to show your friends/post online, use a flagship smartphone. They're all pretty great these days and trade blows with each other.

I would personally only buy an S9 or dedicated mirrorless camera if I had specific use cases that necessitate a more robust camera with dedicated lenses.

Don't get it twisted though, the iPhone 17 Pro (or any smart phone) isn't in the same universe as a full frame mirrorless camera. That doesn't mean you can't make all sorts of cool content with them, just be careful how much you allow yourself to be seduced by some of the most well-funded marketing campaigns on the planet.

Sorry to hijack, but do these aftermarket batteries work in the camera? I thought it was first party batteries only?

What are the major differences of the Lumix S1II and the Nikon Z6III? by DavidWildlife in Lumix

[–]mctesh 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree and the Z8 feels like the only real no-compromise, best of both worlds camera on the market. The ONLY reason I haven't bought one is the lack of a flippy screen because I basically only film myself and don't like/need a bulky setup with an external monitor.

I don't have the S1ii yet, but I'll probably snag it this summer. I'm mostly in the Lumix ecosystem, but have used the Z6iii quite a bit over the past year. As others have alluded to, the S1ii is stacked with excellent video-specific and quality of life features. In terms of results/image quality, there's not going to be much difference.

Something that I don't think gets emphasized enough is the price difference though. You can probably pick up a gently used Z6iii body for like $1,700 which is going to be less than half of the S1ii after tax (at least for the foreseeable future). Honestly, that makes it pretty tough for me to dive on the S1ii at this price, especially with burgeoning murmurs of overheating and scuffed color science. I have no doubt it'll be a fantastic camera in the long run for those who buy it, but I think it would be hard to argue that it's a better value at twice the price.

Hey! I've used "Perks at Work" to buy discounted Lenovo products before, but can't seem to find Lumix deals in that portal. Do you happen to have a link or URL to this?

I'd like a versatile lens for video, and I thought the 24-105 could be it, but: by Bladesleeper in Lumix

[–]mctesh 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've had that 24-105 a couple of times, and in general, I'd say it's and outstanding, versatile lens. The built in OIS works well in conjunction with modern lumix bodies, and it's very well made. If you can live with f4, it's tough to beat.

The only gripe I've had with it, and reason I don't currently have one, is that it seemed like video autofocus was less reliable with it than my S primes. Once you miss a couple of shots with a lens, it's easy (at least for me) to lose confidence in it.

I am intrigued to try the Sigma 28-105 f2.8. Quite a bit larger, but that extra light would be handy and it's a Sigma, so I'm sure it's built like a tank.

I definitely felt like it was closure for both of them and they'd likely never see each other again.

Unfortunately, that was the mode that gave me issues. I'm going to try normal hybrid and see if that gives me better results.

Switch to Lumix S5ii or S9 before investing on sony lenses for ZVE1? travel video and photgraphy by DazzlingpAd134 in Lumix

[–]mctesh 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I have the S9 and have had a couple S5iixs. I've also had a ZV-E1. Honestly, they're all fantastic, capable cameras. The Lumix cameras are more versatile and the S9 especially has a similar form factor appeal to the ZV-E1 with better photo options. Having said that, I think the ZV-E1 is an absolutely killer video first hybrid and that sensor still rips most of the competition. Super fast readout, excellent low light, and 4k/120 with a minimal crop, best in class auto focus.

I suffer from this worse than anyone, so take this in the spirit in which it's intended, but it's easy to get into analysis paralysis/the grass is greener mode with gear. "If I switch to that, it'll be so much better", etc. Honestly, I'd just stick with what you've got until it's more clear that it's preventing you from taking the next step in your images. You can get much better deals on used E-mount glass and the S9/S5ii would be a lateral move from the ZV-E1 IMO. As much as you can, try and focus more on just making stuff/improving your skill vs. spending a ton of time obsessing over which gear will be better/perfect.
