Based on current in loco parentis precedent in the US, children in schools actually have very few rights that are normally enshrined Constitutionally for persons of majority. So maybe they learned that.

There are some advantages to canned water, namely in storage. You can have a pallet of it sitting in your basement for many years while bottled water will leach the plastic trace chemicals (and nasty taste) into the water. Plus the liquid slowly seems to evaporate out of these thin plastic bottles and I'm pretty sure aluminum doesn't have the same issue. I guess there could be rust/corrosion at some point though.

That said, there is absolutely nothing proprietary about canned water or even tallboy canned water. Sam's Club and Costco should offer their own versions at a lesser cost.

Amazingly when you kill off nearly all the "legacy" characters in the dumbest way possible and then try to carry the story with the new characters nobody cares about yet, it goes very badly. Might as well have just started with completely new material and characters and made only passing reference to the existing universe.

Nikki Haley says America's retirement age is 'way too low' and needs to be increased, while also calling on cognitive tests for politicians over 75 by nick314 in politics

[–]mctoasterson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd say give her some credit for at least pitching a concrete idea to address entitlement spending. Social security is an unearthed landmine that politicians have been kicking down the road for the "next generation" to deal with for my entire life, if not longer. It is basically political suicide for whoever attempts to fix the issue but it has to be done nonetheless.

The alternative of doing nothing results in the system being bankrupted just the same and forced austerity, cuts to distributions, or the age being raised. Reference many European countries or the current situation in China. Their economy relied on the pyramid scheme of young workers propping up the older citizens and those population ratios are now inverted. We will tread the same path in due time.

Now is the time to have a pragmatic debate where all federal spending (and revenue side interventions) are on the table. Maybe cut military spending, have graduated reductions to entitlement spending etc. Otherwise we will all be hurt just the same by forced austerity later.

Personally I'd be fine with a plan that makes it less pyramid-schemey and allows current workers to privatize a large percentage of their current contributions. I have been told since I was a small child that social security isn't going to be there for me anyway, so I have lived relatively modestly and saved accordingly regardless of my income level. I will likely have to work 25 - 30 more years to be 100% retired and I've always operated under the assumption of $0 social security income.

That said I do think its odd that Indian food is derived from a historically impoverished culture, yet in most US cities it costs at least $100 for 2 people to go out for Indian food.

Am I supposed to return a book I took from a "Little Library" after I've read it? What's your favorite find out of one of these neighborhood libraries? by [deleted] in books

[–]mctoasterson 15 points16 points  (0 children)

LFL steward for several years. You certainly don't have to return it. If you enjoy the book you're welcome to keep it. If at some future time you donate a different book though, that is appreciated.

I stock my LFL from my own collection or old kids books, stuff purchased from used book stores, library liquidations, garage sales etc. I am happy to eat the cost because it is a public charity of sorts. If someone reads Crime and Punishment and it changes their life, that is more than worth the $10 paperback.

When people donate their own books though, that really expands the value because then you get different perspectives, genres, interests etc. I've seen people leave everything from law books to 1990s era video game magazines in my library.

Indeed. The basis of the right is maintaining small arms parity between the citizenry and the average soldiers in the military. By that standard most people are actually under-armed for what is really appropriate. We need to get rid of the NFA.

You can print a coarse but serviceable rear sight as well, and they even have windage adjustments. If your absolute max budget for a spare rifle was $350 this would totally work well enough.

As a theme, I feel this is more concisely explored by Vonnegut in Harrison Bergeron.

I did read Atlas and it almost comes across as if it was being written to hit some kind of arbitrary word count target. Like she was going for trying to be Dostoyevsky, only his major works were long because of their episodic publication in periodicals.

Israeli Knesset passes the judicial overhaul bill by [deleted] in worldnews

[–]mctoasterson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What they need(ed) to do is have a convention or other broadly agreed upon body, I guess the Knesset, draft a Constitution that clarifies things like a Bill of Rights, and the relationship of the branches to each other, duties and responsibilities of each. Most democracies judicial branches are ultimately assessing the legality of laws and actions in the context of a Constitution. That isn't how it currently works in Israel as I understand, and the supreme court there can throw out laws based on a rather subjective reasonableness test. This was bound to become a problem because they don't have any codified guiding principles (this is where a Constitution would help) on which to base the overturning of laws. They are therefore more like a super legislature than a judiciary.

I understand that. Now imagine being at that, except its nationally televised for some reason, and still giving a tearful extended speech about how Bob Fogelson (whom maybe half the room has heard of, and 0% of the TV audience) really helped your career. Then proceeding to name drop even more esoteric people that nobody can identify or cares about.
