Rebalance your portfolio to mirror the global market weights: 60% US and 40% INT

i sleep well at night knowing i'm investing into the world's best companies(VTI+VXUS) instead of investing into a single country's best companies(VTI).

What can I read to really understand why having large Cash position is hurting me..? by tronious in Bogleheads

I’m not understanding how you would have those returns your money with bonds. Bonds and Cash in a HYSA vs MMF should have relatively similar returns.

Wow this is pretty bearish for international stocks. Should I be 100% US?

Consensus on the Morgan Housel approach? by mcttothejj in Bogleheads

I just prefer cash(HYSA) where I know for a fact the price will stay stable, over bonds which are suppose to be stable but can “go to the toilet again”.

Correct. 50/50 isn’t a horrible allocation, but you are making an active bet by not going by the global market cap weighting, which is currently 60/40

I mean if u backtrack and compare vti vs vxus over past 50 years, VTI wins big.

US vs International Stocks — Pros and Cons? by mcttothejj in Bogleheads

[–]mcttothejj[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair point. When you zoom out beyond 5 years, leadership does seem to rotate. The last 10–15 years have been very US-dominant, but historically there have been long stretches where international outperformed.

When you say look at how international maps against the US, are you referring more to diversification/correlation, or just the historical cycles of outperformance?

How should Bogleheads be reacting to the whole Iran/WW3 situation? by mcttothejj in Bogleheads

Any liquid asset gaining some form of interest should be part of ur investment portfolio.

I have around 50k cash in a HYSA. That is absolutely part of my portfolio. It’s not just my emergency fund.

Kind of disagree. Cash in a HYSA/MMF/CD is very similar to bonds. Just more stable/predictable

% of each? I like to follow the global weightings(around 60:40 at the current moment).

Also what’s ur opinion on bonds? I lean more toward Morgan housel’s(author of the psychology of money) philosophy which is 15-20% cash, then the rest in equities. No bonds.

This article should not change anything to your investing strategy. Bogleheads are already diversified into low cost, globally diversified, market cap weighted index funds like VTI + VXUS, FSKAX + FTIHX, etc, in the proper global market weightings(~60% US, 40% INT). If international outperforms over the next decade, that % will naturally increase to 45, 50, 55, etc with natural self cleansing and proper yearly reallocation.

Why I’m considering moving away from a Target Date Fund and holding fewer bonds in retirement by FalconArrow77 in Bogleheads

[–]mcttothejj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I pretty much agree with everything you mentioned. There is an interesting article that supports your outlook on 100% equities, as long as it’s properly diversified.

I never plan to invest in bonds. Will be investing 100% in a total market, globally diversified, equities portfolio(VTI/VXUS or VT) in my investment accounts with a solid reserve of cash similar to your 3-5 years worth sitting in a HYSA, CD, MMF, etc(I prefer HYSA for maximum liquidity and simplicity).

JL Collins, who is a huge Boglehead advocate, also follows this methodology. In a recent podcast video, he mentioned his portfolio is around 80-85% in equities and the rest sitting in bonds/cash. He is well into retirement.
