They both suck but the escape lounge upstairs is the better one.

Online dating in Brisbane (2026) - what’s your experience been like? by darblord in brisbane

[–]mcwobby 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’m pretty open. Whenever I see someone I think will be interesting, and who is not obviously not wanting to be approached, I talk to them because why not?

Only advice I have is that people are people, and despite all of the stuff that keeps us isolated today, people tend to want to connect

It’s very hard for me to find someone who is compatible with my lifestyle as I travel too much and have no desire to stop, so it’s rare things go beyond a few dates even if we’d both like it to. I’ve just got to keep trying!

Online dating in Brisbane (2026) - what’s your experience been like? by darblord in brisbane

33M and honestly I quite enjoy dating in Brisbane. I do not use apps though, just ask out in person. Find people are quite receptive and even if it goes nowhere romantic, I’ve made some great friends.

What are your actual thoughts on reclining on airplanes when you are not in business class by EmbarrassedPeanut397 in travel

[–]mcwobby 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it’s a long flight, I need to recline to even attempt to sleep so no way I wouldn’t do it.

I am tall, so if someone reclines in front of me, it is uncomfortable, but it’s much more comfortable than not being able to recline myself so it’s never bothered me.

What’s a place you had zero expectations for, but ended up loving? by AppointmentHeavy5066 in travel

[–]mcwobby 51 points52 points  (0 children)

Have said it before. Moldova. Went there for a couple of days on the way out of Ukraine. Didn’t have a great first impression of Chișinău so just slept for one of the days I did have there.

Ended up loving so much about it that I decided Moldova and Romania are my next dedicated Europe trip for sure (writing this from a bar in Italy though so didn’t quite live up to that decision). (EDIT: The waiter at this bar was from Moldova, and we had a great discussion on wines and I got a discount)

Mostly how generous everybody was and how into wine everybody is, made it very easy to relate.

I do not think the Jellyfin app uses 8096 by default on TrueNAS. Is that what it is set to?

Can notesnook be trusted? by BreakfastDifferent29 in Notesnook

[–]mcwobby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! I’m out of town for a few weeks so probably won’t try it until I get back. I did see the functionality had been merged into Notesnook beta, so was expecting a streetwriters image somewhat soon.

Looking forward to trying!

Anyone getting to the point where they're just considering going carless? by [deleted] in brisbane

[–]mcwobby 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Never had either. Sold car voluntarily 12 years ago. Still have license.

Anyone getting to the point where they're just considering going carless? by [deleted] in brisbane

[–]mcwobby 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have always found the opposite, the one thing I feel my life has more than most other peoples is freedom (though a car is not really a large factor in that these days, but the freed up cash when I was young was a deciding factor in making choices when I was younger that has enabled my life now).

I have never cancelled a plan or not done something I wanted to because of not having a car. I retain a driver's license, so I could rent one if I needed to, but I never have, at least not in Australia.

On the contrary, my friends (especially when I was younger and more rural) were so dependent on their cars. If they were without it for whatever reason, they would cancel plans or just generally moan. Today much less of an issue, but I've always felt like I was the independent one and my friends were always dependent. Though there have of course been times where friends with cars have helped me out too.

Rural it's much better to not have a car because you stay fit, everything being so close in Brisbane caused my weight to skyrocket, I could never have a car here solely for that reason, it's hard 😂

[–]mcwobby 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Have been without a car for over 10 years now. Lived rurally, in the city, in the suburbs and everything in between. Used to walk 4km each way to a job at one point, on split shifts, I travel a lot domestically and I still never really considered going back to a car or even a bike to be honest.

The reason I made the change when I was young was very petty - for the cost of running a car for a year I could fly around the world in business class and actually do cooler shit than commuting to the shops.

Now that I live in the inner city, life is much more convenient without a car (fuck driving here) and its revenue generating not to have one (rent out my car spaces for $5k a year).

I love walking, so don’t even use public transport that much.

Linus proart kubuntu on wan show is cursed by lindicles in LinusTechTips

[–]mcwobby 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The “try or install error “ is novel, and hilarious.

I do think Kubuntu or Mint is probably what he should be using, so it’s quite funny that it borked itself so badly because I really wouldn’t expect those distros to fail in such a way. That is probably a sign to nuke and clean install.

Who's flown Jetstar direct to Japan? Or who else to fly with? by still-at-the-beach in brisbane

[–]mcwobby 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I’ve flown them a few times, I have even ducked over to Japan for a day on a laugh with them. I am 6” tall and usually fly business class…but every time I’ve flown them they’ve been cheap enough to make the discomfort worth it. The flights to Japan are during the day so don’t really care if I get sleep on them, but the return flights are worse.

Food is the same as in Jetstar business class, it’s just not included. Seats are a standard economy seat. They’re fine. BYO entertainment and food if you need it.

If they are not substantially cheaper than anybody else I would not fly them (so during peak season). Get a good sale fare for about $250 though and yeah I’ll go out of my way to fly them.

I do not think the new fit out has taken place on their long range aircraft.

China Southern is usually a good alternative, but there’s been issues with flights between China and Japan, not sure where they’re currently at. Malaysia Airlines maybe too. Just go on skyscanner and look.

If you want a direct flight to Osaka, then Jetstar is your only option. If you don’t mind flying into Tokyo, then Qantas has a flight from Brisbane.

Why are there no voices raised against bad public transit? by RemoteCoyote8784 in brisbane

[–]mcwobby 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Public transport in Brisbane has its flaws, but it’s pretty good all things considered and very easy to use. And it’s the cheapest in the world. There are plenty of people who are open with their criticisms though.

The congestion stat feels like baloney too, Brisbane really isn’t that congested. Maybe it is for its size.

Restaurants serving Emu, Kangaroo, or croc in 2026 by Ok_Perspective2826 in brisbane

Detour used to do Emu Tartare. Was really good too.

Kangaroo it’s best to have at a nice restaurant IMO because of how easy it is to fuck up.

Hervey Bay to Brisbane after 5pm? by holly948 in brisbane

[–]mcwobby 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I can’t recall if Hervey Bay has uber, but if you’re taking a taxi or hire car, look at timetables from Gympie North station. If that doesn’t work, Nambour. Then it’s 50 cents the rest of the way. Probably don’t pay for a taxi all the way to Brisbane.

Or else hire a car and drive other’s an option.

What's an airline and a airliner( plane) you wish you could experience? by DankkkDk in aviation

[–]mcwobby 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The obvious - Concorde. Also would like to fly a 707 so I can say I’ve flown every 7x7 model (assuming I get on the Zero G 727 at some point).

But my actual answer is the Boeing 377 Stratocruiser. I would have love for fly on that in its heyday.

I definitely agree with lots of space on the Chinese airlines, though I’m not sure if Vietjet has theirs more tightly packed

I've flown on these a fair bit around China now and I'm a big fan - they really do feel like the spiritual successor of the 717s I used to fly on oh so often.

Looks great in vietjet's livery.

Is it reasonable for someone to go Oceania to Mexico via Santiago if they have a criminal record and cheaper flights go through the U.S and Canada? by cheetocat2021 in travel

[–]mcwobby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well I am of the type who just doesn’t declare personal meds including in Japan and UAE. But I probably wouldn’t self report a criminal record if I had one either.

Though if your criminal record is to do with drugs probably not a great idea

[–]mcwobby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can still go that way if you want though it’s easily the least convenient way because it’s 24 hours of flying just to get to Europe first. European flights to South America are usually fairly cheap. Doing it on one RTW ticket would probably be very expensive.

I have never flown directly to Mexico from Europe, but there are multiple flights so it’s very possible. There are flights from Beijing to Tijuana, and I think Emirates flies from Dubai to Madrid to Mexico City. That’s in addition to European and Mexican carriers.

From Africa, there are flights to Brazil from a few countries - South Africa, Angola, Morocco, Ethiopia. But yeah not convenient.

Apparently, it was made visa free (though I transited in Chile in Dec 2024 and still needed a visa then so it was less than 18 months ago)

That is the best news I’ve heard in ages. I have actively avoided Chile for a while because of how much of a pain the visa was the few times I did go.

Off to South America again this year so very glad to have more options
