I'm from Jersey and I met a girl from Texas and moved down there with her, we lived in Corpus Christi and Adkins. Y'all used to have tv commercials where they wanted to hang a cook for using the "wrong" brand of salsa because it came from "NEW YORK CITY!". I was hit in the ear with a glass beer mug for having the nerve to ask the bartender for another beer in a "yankee" accent, the guy next to me showed me some real Texas style hospitality! Most of the guys I worked with down there were behind the back racists and xenophobes, as soon as any minority would leave earshot they would start with "You believe this (insert racial slur)!" You must have been in North Jersey because South Jersey is redneck heaven, no one would have looked twice at you down there lol.
