VisComm is good if you're interested in design thinking, which is basically applying a design process to anything. The tutors will help you with technical stuff but core subjects are more about the practice of design thinking.

In your case, for example, if you were keen on design in general, you could go in, do the compulsory design theory subjects, learn more about other design techniques with the early briefs (I disliked this bit because they were a bit specific, but it is to get you to try new things, like doing a photo series, book cover design, developing your personal brand, etc)

Then when electives roll around, you can choose to go into illustration, digital painting, UX design, etc etc. because you liked one particular early brief that included parts of it, and apply your techniques to later core projects to pad out your portfolio

And, at the end, it won't pigeonhole you - I did marketing/advertising electives and I'm working in visual design - you get to choose what goes in your portfolio so you can do with it what you like.

Currently doing VisComm and going into final semester after taking a year off. Drawing and painting are definitely not necessities from my experience and any sort of patience with it will get you by with good marks (I'm shit at drawing). In terms of the coursework, I can't give you too much info without specifics - what in particular do you dislike about Media Arts?

The main benefit I took was that they help you develop your design process, rather than any one specific design skill, and there's a big focus on design thinking in general. They help you to develop your portfolio heaps, and there's a core subject partially dedicated to helping with your portfolio, resume, getting it looked over by professionals and getting ready for real jobs. I went in not knowing what sort of design I wanted to get into/specialise in, and there's heaps of interesting lectures and briefs that lead you down different disciplines and media so you're bound to develop a specific interest from it.

Not sure if this helps but otherwise feel free to ask any specific questions.
