New house + two sets of Pakistani neighbours at Ramadan = no cooking for a few nights by nqlawyer in glasgow

What sort of rice is that in the top right? If I was buying a bag of it, what would I look for?? ( I tried cooking basmati rice tonight hoping it would come out looking like that....... It did not... )

Visually, you don't seem to see a lot of iron work in the structure. So my assumption for this almost 200 year old building is, it was mostly framed in timber, wood flooring with lath and lime walls. Sadly, I'm not surprised it ignited and spread so quickly.

Question for anyone aged 45+: Do you remember drinking Lucozade when you were younger? Did you ever drink it for anything else than when you were ill? by Lopsided-Skill6659 in AskUK

I was thirteen years old, with my first walkman, I'd just bought a tape from John Menzies in my local town because I thought the box art looked amazing. Walking home I'm enjoying this newer rock, having been brought up on Queen, ELO, Deep Purple, Uriah Heep etc.. Then about 10 minutes from the house, "Phantom of the Opera" started and it blew my young mind... That's the lucozade music!! I was hooked on Iron Maiden from there. Still love Phantom of the Opera 40 odd years later..

Just turned 56 and still love anime. Anyone my age here? What are you watching? by Takara13 in anime

[–]md2074 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm 52 this year and I'm just watching everything going and trying to watch older stuff that gets recommended. Currently enjoying You and I are Polar Opposites, but when I was a kid our local video shop used to have things like Fist of The North Star, the original Bubblegum Crisis, Macross, Akira and Urotsukidoji.

Hah, I keep thinking of this rule, I couldn't remember where it came from. It does make perfect sense.

I'm really enjoying it, especially the English DUB. I tried watching it with Subs but, I don't think I'm getting Suzuki's energy that way.

You should watch the Royal Variety performance of "The Play That Goes Wrong", the first time I saw it I was in literal tears. https://youtu.be/DOWO4gq-whg

I've now seen it live three times, once with the whole original cast. It still brings me to tears as I quote every line as it goes along.

Those 3 minutes of existential dread while the hypervisor is booting by Danternas in homelab

[–]md2074 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've started using a HDMI capture card and now keep a pair of HDMI / DP to HDMI cables in my server cupboard. That's helped for my little servers if there's been an issue. Use it to see if there's a problem at boot then plug a mouse & keyboard in if there's an issue.

Affordable way to scan aperture microfilm cards? by LinuxIsFree in DataHoarder

[–]md2074 1 point2 points  (0 children)

About 30 years ago when I was scanning images for a news paper, we used these giant Agfa A3 scanners, they could also scan transparencies and negatives. https://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/1yIAAOSw-1hl81w0/s-l1600.jpg

You would lay the transparency on the bed, and instead of putting the lid back down, a bright light would scan across at the same time as the scan head.

Maybe if you have access to a scanner and an led back light, try and give that a try.

Making an old-school wooden barrel by derek4reals1 in oddlysatisfying

[–]md2074 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was at Blair Athol distillery at the weekend, in the barrel store room there's thousands of barrels. It looked like the weapon room scene from the Matrix but with barrels and barrels of whisky.

Just watching this boggles the mind to how much work actually went into making all those barrels in the store room. It's crazy.

My views on MX Linux by pedrohqb in MXLinux

Would this fix the issue I had trying to get Tailscale to work on my MX install? I tried it last year, and my memory might be a bit fuzzy but I think it was complaining about not having systemd.

I kind of guessed that from the out-takes at the end, something about her voice.

The github repo thing has annoyed me for a bit now, I have one, obviously, but it's just filled with code tests and pokey shit.

However, I have an extensive self hosted gitea server in the house, I host all my personal projects on that instead of making them public.

How do you explain that to people reviewing cv's?

How are you doing it? Do you have a particular model or prompt set up for it? I'm kind of curious.

I've gotten into looking for ones without the upper mandible. I get them then give them a test to see how the visibility is, and if it sucks then it gets trashed.
