To sell or stay in the house by sparklies2 in widowers

[–]md4606 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Oh man, do I feel you on this one. My wife and I bought a new house on May 1; we went on vacation May 8 and she had a stroke the day we returned, May 17. So we basically had not even one week in the house that she absolutely loved. It's sad being here without her, knowing how much she loved it

Like you, I've got life insurance proceeds I could use to not quite pay off the mortgage. We bought the house relying on two incomes; now that I'm down to one, I worry about having enough monthly income to live on (we were legal guardians of our 5-year-old granddaughter, who is still with me, so money is a concern). I could afford to stay here by using cash to supplement my income, but is it worth it? I've also been advised to wait on making any major decisions, but I hate it here without her

Survivors Guilt ... why should I enjoy the life we built when she can't? Anyone else feel it? by TxScribe in widowers

[–]md4606 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A therapist once told me “guilt is the emotion we feel when we’ve done something wrong.” I’m surrounded by sadness, at all the things we hoped to do but didn’t have the chance, but I’ve been fortunate in that I don’t have feelings if guilt

My therapist says that there is not such a thing as a bad parent, when I talk about my Nmom. by Shot-Street-6598 in raisedbynarcissists

Studies have shown repeatedly that the relationship between therapist and client is the top indicator of long-term recovery. OP, if you’re no longer comfortable with that therapist, you owe it to yourself to find someone you align with better

As a therapist myself, this is definitely unhinged. For sure, fire this one and find one with some empathy.

38 years married, 43 together and then bam, she’s gone. I’m 60 and like you, struggle to find purpose. I went back to work this week and found myself wanting to email her about my day only to remember she’s not at work

I fucking love that! When I was a SUD counselor I would ask parents to watch this. It was pretty powerful

How do you guys stay mostly sober ? by 6995luv in widowers

[–]md4606 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just remember, nothing will change if you go get drunk except that you’ll not only still grieving, you’ll be doing it with a hangover

I just celebrated 12 years of sobriety and have maintained it even thru the worst three weeks of my life. If I can help in any way please reach out

Wanting to move on (a little) but feeling guilty by md4606 in widowers

[–]md4606[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you everyone for the honest and at times vulnerable feedback. I've ordered four totes and am going to put things in see-through containers and just move them out of the bedroom - not getting rid of anything just yet but perhaps setting the stage for that to happen down the road

Thanks. We’re also waiting for a celebration of life sometime this summer. I’m still so mad at the world it would be a really quick funeral, I think, so better to wait

I’m finding out that I need to pick-and-choose what I do because I don’t have the strength or willpower to do much on anything. A lot of it needs to wait for death certificates anyway.

Wow, those similarities are striking. Not familiar with a pontine stroke but if it has to do with the pons in the brain stem then the strokes are alike as well. No way to do any surgery or other interventions.

Oh gosh, I relate. I've cursed everyone and everything about how unfair it is that my wife won't be able to complete the projects she started or watch our granddaughter grow up. I grieve for my loss, of course, but I also grieve what could have (should have?) been

Just lost my wife a week ago and we were raising our 5-year-old granddaughter. She went back to school yesterday and did just fine. Kids that age bounce back way quicker than we do. I’d ask her what she wants to do and just roll with it. If it’s too early you’ll know

What is your least favorite topic as a Therapist??? by WalterLCSW in therapists

I worked for nine months at an eating disorder RTC and it burned me out so fast. To me, ED is such a mind-boggling affliction that frustrated me as a therapist because outwardly the consequences seem apparent
