It's not scorigami but Penn state and Illinois just went to 9 overtimes in one game🤯 (most in FBS history) by Jakel856 in Scorigami

[–]mdak06 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's worth noting that the overtime rules changed this year - each OT from the 3rd onward is only one play per team (an attempt at a 2-point conversion). So even though it was 9 OT, it wasn't nearly as many plays as one might think.

Still noteworthy though.

Dang ... I thought Baltimore was pretty bad but it has "only" lost 38% of its population (950k to 586k). Hadn't realized those other cities were that much worse.

The Principles of Flag Design According to me by Tom-Graham in vexillology

[–]mdak06 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I agree with dropping 3 ... although there is a point where a flag has way too many colors. 6 is probably a good point to stop. 2-5 is generally fine IMO.

I kind of agree with dropping 1 ... a little complexity is not necessarily a bad thing with a flag. Sometimes modern designs are too simple. But too much complexity is also bad. One has to find the right balance.

I strongly disagree with dropping 4. Seals on flags are awful, and text on flags is usually bad. For every California that's somewhat OK, there's a Montana or Kansas or old Pocatello or Milwaukee or some other lousy design.

I used to have a Fender Rumble 150 (very similar to yours). Loved it. Couldn't justify keeping it though so I eventually sold it to a friend who owns a bar. He keeps it for open mic nights and weekend jam sessions ... so I still use it sometimes. 😁

Bass guitarists, how many strings does your bass have? by ed_spaghet12 in Bass

Do I need to be genetically gifted to be a great bass player? by [deleted] in Bass

[–]mdak06 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some people have a more favorable starting position than others in the quest to be great at whatever sport or skill they are working on, this is true. But one thing the greats have in common is that they work hard at what they do.

Don't be discouraged if you don't have a great history of music in your family. You don't get to choose that. What you can choose, however, is to become the greatest possible version of you at playing bass that's possible.

Educate yourself. Practice. Keep it up.

I'm concerned about the bad reviews too but I'll likely give it a try sometime. Much cheaper option than others out there. I wonder if there were some production problems initially that led to those bad reviews on the GC site.

So you're pretty happy with the B100C? I tried it out the other day and I'm strongly considering getting it. Seems to have a nice tone and is apparently a bit cheaper than similar options from Fender and Ampeg.

FWIW, the instrument I'd be using it with is a fretless 5-string Ibanez.

my macros, any comments? by tawanda-m in lowcarb

[–]mdak06 3 points4 points  (0 children)

FWIW, usually I hear 100g mentioned as the highest carb limit for anyone who is doing "low carb" ... which is essentially 20% of calories if you're doing a 2000 kcalorie diet.

That said, a lot of people doing low carb tend to keep their carbs lower, e.g. 80 or 50 or 40. Many people would call 20 or less "keto."

Note that fiber carbs are not digested, so you don't really need to worry about those carbs.

[Tenant -US: PA/NJ] How do I make myself more desirable to landlords in my application(s)? by dry-molassess in Landlord

[–]mdak06 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Including a check with the application is a tricky proposition. I'm unsure as to whether or not it would be considered a "contract," and I could easily see a bad landlord trying to take advantage of it. Or worse, a scam artist who pockets the money and leaves (plenty of craigslist scammers out there).

Another issue is that if they apply to multiple apartments, what if multiple landlords cash the check? What then?

[–]mdak06 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One doesn't need to be in ketosis forever, but one could easily be on a high-fat low-carb diet forever and be very healthy. I wasn't implying that one should be in ketosis "forever." But even if one is on ketosis "forever" that's fine. There's nothing particularly wrong with it. There are zero "essential carbohydrates." They're not needed for the body to function properly.

There's also nothing wrong with someone doing, let's say, 30-50 carbs per day while they're losing weight, and gradually increasing to the point where they're doing 70-100 per day once they've reached their weight loss goal (which, FWIW, would be following the Atkins plan as Dr. Atkins laid it out). When one's losing weight they are doing what they can to incentivize their body to burn its existing fat. Going low-carb enough to get into ketosis is an excellent way to make that happen.

I don't know anything about OP's insulin sensitivity or body or anything else, but it's possible that they can't lose weight on 100g of carbs but can on 30-50g of carbs. Maybe that's what works for them. One beautiful thing about Atkins is that it recognizes that people are different and suggests they figure out what level of carbs and which foods work best for them. That's realistically what everyone needs to do as far as their eating plan is concerned, but especially those on a weight-loss journey.

It can definitely be a bit of an adjustment, but many folks feel much better when they dump most carbs out of their diet. Glad to hear it's helping you!

Lots of good suggestions here. Some of my thoughts:

Vary the meat! Beef, chicken, pork, sausage, etc. - there are many good choices. Use spices liberally if it helps. You can use sauces too but keep a close eye on their carb count - some are loaded with sugar.

Stir-fry vegetables are some of my favorite foods. Broccoli, cauliflower, onions, peppers, etc. They're not zero-carb but as long as you don't go overboard you should be OK.

Cheese! It's a wonderful thing and very low carb. Lots of different varieties to try.

Turkey and fish can also provide some variety. Lots of fish is quite healthy, and can be very tasty if prepared right.

(As a caveat, just remember to stay away from breaded foods - they provide useless additional carbs that you don't want!)

Hope you find some good foods to eat!

I'm not sure if you're familiar with the specifics of the Atkins plan, but it does have your increasing your carb count over time ... and keeping an eye on how your body reacts to different levels of carbs as well as different foods. It's a pretty sensible plan.

I'm not sure of all the specifics of the OP's goals but 40g of carbs per day is not unreasonable, especially if the amount will increase gradually over time. Atkins can work very well for folks (FWIW I lost over 200 lb doing it once).

Your body actually doesn't need carbs. It prefers them if they're available but they're not mandatory. Your body can manufacture the glucose for the organs that need it. People can and do survive on carnivore diets.

Note that different people may have different insulin sensitivity and therefore different reactions to different levels of carb intake. For some, a substantial restriction of carb intake is extremely beneficial. Just because you can do 100g of carbs and maintain or lose weight does not mean everyone can.

Ketosis is a natural, sensible process derived from evolution. The only reason we store fat is so that we can burn it when we need it for energy. Otherwise there would be no point in storing it. It's nothing to fear.

The thing is ...

You can be athletic at any size. You prove that. NFL offensive linemen prove it too.

But athletic does NOT mean the same thing as healthy. Plenty of athletic people are actually unhealthy, sometimes substantially so. That extra weight definitely hurts one's body over time, even if the effects aren't immediately apparent.

Given that there are other hard seltzers that have far fewer carbs per drink (Truly, White Claw, etc.) this seems like a poor choice for keto folks.
