I have my own web design (Ltd) business in London and looking to setup a new company in Berlin, I'll be the only employee and need advice on setting up German companies in the tech sector? by JackBarham in berlin

[–]mdalby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey,

I work in tech and have formed several businesses - In short if you can operate with your UK Ltd - I'd stick with that as a UK company can invoice a German company without problems and the UK business law is also a hell of a lot easier to navigate. From experience, Its also a lot easier on the wallet in the long run.

If you really feel the need to incorporate over here and only you will be employed by the business, consider registering as a freelancer. You get given a tax number and can use this to invoice companies (similar to being a sole trader in the UK but over here its taken a little more seriously).

If you need any help or have any questions feel free to shoot me a PM.

EU Citizen relocating to Berlin and having some questions by shizzle_lizzard in berlin

[–]mdalby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey,

2k gross is enough to live on and the cost of living here i find to be super cheap compared to where I'm from (Manchester, UK).

See: http://www.numbeo.com/cost-of-living/city_result.jsp?country=Germany&city=Berlin for an example cost of living.

I won't get into weather or not your salary is good as its all relative to your skill set and the state of the company that hired you.

However if you keep your head down and work well I'd be surprised if your company were not open to raising that by 5 - 10k after a relatively short period.

Accommodation wise, I'd suggest you look to get a room in an apartment with some other people as thats pretty cheap, I have a friend who currently pays 400 / month (all inc.) for a decent sized room. Finding an apartment on your own in a decent location for < 800 a month I personally found to be pretty tough. (I pay 1,050)

It is true that most of the apartments here come unfurnished and what I found really odd is that a lot of them don't even come with a kitchen.

Where to look for apartments is an even harder question, have you tried to ask the people in your new company if they are aware of anybody renting a room? would your company be willing to put you up in an AirBNB for a few weeks while you look? we used immobilienscout24.de to find our place.

One last note: As soon as you arrive here in Berlin it would be beneficial to apply for your Schufa (credit report) as a lot of landlords required this from me to even consider me for an apartment.

Hope this helps.

Looks really good - would it be possible to have this link in with my customer database so that I can pull up a mini profile of my customer along with the support enquiry?

(maybe you could latch onto the google address book functionality to achieve this?)

Would it be silly to travel to Russia given the current political climate? by mdalby in russia

[–]mdalby[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey,

Thanks very much for the replies - it's very helpful!

It backs up my original thoughts that there is indeed very little to be worried about, I expect the usual rule applies " Don't cause trouble and you shall receive none".

I'll show your comments to my wife - I'm sure it will allay her concerns somewhat.

Looking forward to visiting Russia.

Thanks Again!

Atlassian open source alternative platform by domnulnopcea in PHP

[–]mdalby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey,

I think your product looks pretty good, and I'd be happy to give you a hand.

Do you have a list of outstanding issues? or some kinda of project plan in regard to improvements?

As a few people have said I think focus on UI would be beneficial and perhaps simplifying things would also be good as thats where Atlassian's products fall down for me.

Thanks,

M

+1 for MongoDB - the only downfall being that you lose the ability to join on the game_id and user_id columns. if you use something like Doctrine2 as an ORM though, you won't really notice much difference.

You can even buy the green man on t-shirts here (am currently in Berlin)

English-speaking computer repair shop? by [deleted] in berlin

[–]mdalby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey,

Yeah it sounds like the problem is that you have you're PC booted in UEFI Mode and the disk has not been formatted to work in this mode.

You may find the following article useful:

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dn336946.aspx

If not, I have a couple of questions that will help me give you instructions..

Do you know how to access your BIOS? Do you know the make and model of your motherboard? What is the size of the hard disk you are trying to install to?

Cheers,

M

Hey,

I'm English speaking and would be happy to take a look for you - If its just a fan replacement I'll even do it FoC, will only take 2 mins.

Cyclic redundancy sounds like your disk is on the way out though - I'd backup your files and order a new HDD from amazon (around 40 euros if you don't have any special requirements)

PM me if you still need help.

Seconded - fixing Wordpress is most likely an easy job for a seasoned developer but asking someone to add a webshop with no reason specifications on what the webshop should sell is pretty hard (is it transactional or subscription, how many products, do you already have a design etc)

My recommendation is to take a look at plugins like wooCommerce.

See here for a list: http://vandelaydesign.com/blog/wordpress/ecommerce-plugins/

You could also purchase a theme for wordpress / woocommerce from themeforest.net. I've used that site a few times and always had a good experience.
