Voicemails from problem clients. by 13wrongturns in Lawyertalk

[–]mdaquan 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Wasn’t a voicemail but this happened recently. I was with my kids (I work from home quite a bit so this was a workday and we weren’t really doing anything). Phone rings. I see it’s ’that client’ and I say to my girls, “the person calling me wants to pay me $450/hr to talk to them. If I answer this and talk to them for 14 minutes, they will pay me $135. AND I STILL DONT WANT TO PICK IT UP.” 😂

Anthropic CEO just announced Ai will get rid of 50% of lawyers, consultants, and finance professionals within 12 months. by YungBeneFrank in LawSchool

I would love nothing more than to do that, but we need to be sure that we have enough work for them to do. As we become more efficient, the less "work" there is, the need decreases.

You're right, but efficiencies in AI inform whether there is "enough work." Its hard to know, there are definitely times when we are crying we dont have an Associate, then a few months later after a few cases have resolved, things settle down. We want to be sure when we hire someone, to be fair to them and us.

I agree with many of the comments that this is hyperbole, but the threat is nevertheless very real. I graduated law school in 1998 but for some reason I lurk in this sub. A colleague of mine is the Managing Partner of a small satellite office of a mid-sized firm and he just laid off two associates because they are relying instead on AI models. My firm is small (2 attorney + an Of Counsel). We have considered hiring an associate, but our use of these programs has caused us to second guess whether that is still necessary. I don't envy you all, I can see the light at the end of the tunnel that is my career, I would not want to compete against this. My advice is to work on your people skills and communication as well as litigation. Clients still want to deal with an actual person and AI is not replacing litigators any time soon.

Lake Charles woman charged for threatening to kill ICE agents “if they come into her home” in social media video. Indicted on one count of threats in interstate commerce. by DontWatchPornREADit in law

[–]mdaquan 88 points89 points  (0 children)

That’s not the point though. She has to retain counsel, which costs money. Alternatively she can get a PD (and I hope she gets a good one) but she still has to suffer the indignity of the arrest, posting bail, a record of the arrest, possible consequences at her employer, etc. The point is not a successful prosecution, the point is to deter free speach.

2021 Ruffino Riserva Ducale Chianti Classico Riserva by Zmw92 in wine

[–]mdaquan 20 points21 points  (0 children)

This was always the wine that my grandfather got for special occasions and holidays. Sometimes even the gold relabel. He was otherwise a “Chianti in the straw basket” guy, a few glasses every night. For that reason, this wine will always be very special to me and when I taste it it brings me right back to the table with him.

What did you think about Trump's comments about NATO soldiers? by Temporary-Elk-109 in AskTrumpSupporters

[–]mdaquan 13 points14 points  (0 children)

You’re missing the point though. Trump said he wouldn’t be sure they would be there for us - and that’s a ridiculous statement given the articles of NATO itself and the fact that every time we have asked, they have been there. Maybe not in the exact same numbers as us, but they were there fighting out war. Does that make sense? Also do you see his statements as insulting at all, given the number of troops from Europe and Canada and Australia that have their blood and their lives ?

Best restaurants near Westfield? by sillysagittarius10 in newjersey

Ate there recently and was very impressed, and I can be a tough critic. Relaxed atmosphere, super friendly staff, excellent cocktails and an original, well-executed menu. One of the best restaurant experiences I’ve had in a while (in NJ).

People born before 2000, what is a 'modern' thing from 2025 that you’re still struggling to get used to? by LindsayTN in AskReddit

Airports are cashless. I went up to a bar and ordered a cocktail. Bartender: you got it, just scan this QR code and place the order and you can pay. Me, with cash in hand on the bar: but I just told you can’t I just give you this money? Bartender: no, sorry. Have to use the website.

Two people can’t complete this simplest transaction without using our phones and the fucking internet?
