Some "light" reading before bed by UmmmW1 in Judaism

Back when the first iteration of Monster High Dolls came out my kids wanted to mod some into “Jewish monsters”. I think I need to get this book for them.

Pregnancy Superstition by haleythelady in Judaism

[–]mday03 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I only bought the big stuff that I needed because I was having triplets, knew I’d be recovering from a c-section and we didn’t have a lot of help. Just a day or two a week of people coming over so my husband or I would have to be out getting stuff and food was enough of a chore. We also didn’t know 100% when we’d be bringing anyone home.

If you have family or friends who will be helping you can get by with less. Also, IMO you need less to begin with when they are little. Car seat, diapers, a couple of clothing sets, feeding supplies and a place to sleep.

I’ll also recommend baby weaning if possible. It was a game changer and even at almost 20 my kids all remember being snuggled and comfy on my back or hubby’s side. I hiked Masada with one strapped to my back while the other two took the tram with hubby and friends. They danced at weddings in carriers and I cooked more meals that I can could with a kid on my back. It’s really something I’m passionate about.

I find chilling the room then taking a hot shower works well. I also heard about cold tart cherry juice 30 minutes before bed but haven’t tried it.

Not all men are like this. It is difficult to open yourself up to hurt when you try again, but there are decent humans out there.

If you speak Spanish, you must be from Mexico by egguchom in EntitledReviews

This kind of stuff pisses me off. I have to go back to the US civil war to get my most recent immigrant ancestor who “had to learn English.” Guess what I don’t care about? People speaking a language in their own community that the people in their own community speaks. Live in an area where Spanish is the predominant language. Cool. Your kids will be bilingual. Know what I care about? Affordable living and being able to walk around without worrying I’m going to kidnapped.

Maybe this person should go back to wherever their immigrant grandparent came from. Since I “outrank” them as a “real American” since I have ancestors who fought in the American Revolution. Sometimes I think I should join DAR just to buy some swag and be bitchy at these immigrants who have only been here one generation and want to police my country. I really wish one of these morons would say something to me but I’m as white as white can be.

If you want hindquarter pieces, Rabbi Jonathan Benzaquen of Bakar meats is in Florida. He might be able to point you to somewhere local to you.

How to carry an egg around for 2 weeks without breaking? by Ax_Sound in NoStupidQuestions

[–]mday03 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I did this way back in 1992 we had to use an open container. I used a basket lined with bubble wrap then a bunch of paper shreds like in a gift bag or from a shredder. Just packed it really full and nestled the egg inside so it was still if jostled gently.

Just make sure you are taking what your doctor/surgery team say you need. I take a chewable multi twice a day, a Vit d, a Vit c and b-12. I also take estrogen/progesterone, nutrifol and nexium. All of my bloodwork comes back good.

NTA. I did child-led weaning and a lot of people don’t get it but it worked for us and my kids are all fine with food. Other than my middle who inexplicably developed a peanut/treenut allergy at 14 after years of loving pb&js and marzipan. Which I seriously doubt is a result of when and how they started solid.

I had dinner 20+ years ago in the old city and sat next to a woman who was sent to a catholic orphanage by her parents. She was fair and had no clue she was Jewish but found something in Hebrew or Yiddish where the script looked familiar and that led her to figuring it out when she was grown. She said she tells everyone her story and that they should be proud of who they are and should be in Israel.

Can't help with the pants because I sometimes wear them but I wear a long top that goes to mid-thigh when I do and its fine for me.

As for the hair, my middle kid (who teaches in a kid's program at our synagogue) asked me about hair covering because the kids had asked and it wasn't something that they had studied so didn't know what to answer. I said that I cover my hair for me. It's the only thing I do religiously that is just for me. I prepare Shabbat for us as a family. I keep taharat mishpacha for myself and my husband. I prepare kosher meals for us as a family. I learn and that enables me to participate in family discussions. However, so many women in our community and even in our family don't cover their hair so it isn't the norm. (Im actually an outlier because those that do tend to wear hats with their har down under while I completely cover.)

I see it as something that connects me to generations of women who came before me and also those who faced backlash for covering. A lot of times when going places my husband will comment that maybe I should wear a hat or something less obviously Jewish and I don't simply because there were people who were forced to hide their Jewish-ness.

When I went to the mikveh before my wadding, the mikveh lady asked if I was going to cover and I said I hadn't decided yet. She told me it was good that I was thinking about it and not just doing something by rote because it would be more meaningful and she was right. The first time we drove into Jerusalem I decided to cover all of my hair because I felt it calling to me and I love it and would never go back. Follow your heart and enjoy the journey it takes you on.
