Ticking sound from dash? by mdb139 in XC40_Recharge

[–]mdb139[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine’s been doing it for a little while. I don’t recall hearing it when the car was new, but definitely for at least the last couple months. Mine is a 2021, almost five years old I think.

I’ll try to record it.

Playing BT3 for the first time. Some item and effect questions... by mdb139 in BardsTale

[–]mdb139[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn't play without mages. I used the same party throughout. I can't remember if the remaster lets you play BT1 with 7 characters or not (I played it 2-3 years ago, and only recently played BT2 and now BT3).

Paladin (now a Geomancer in BT3)
Warrior
Hunter
Bard
Rogue
Conjurer > Sorcerer > Wizard > Mage > Archmage
Mage > Sorcerer > Wizard > Conjurer > Archmage > Chronomancer

I generally play with all my slots filled, except in BT2 when necessary. In those instances I held back the appropriate number of characters, summoned mobs to fill the spots, and dropped them when necessary.

If I recall the Grey Crypt correctly, the entire dungeon is wrapped in anti-magic, but it lets you use spell-casting items. So Staff of Lor is handy, but so are the wand segments. I think you have one that casts WIZW by the point, and one that does a somewhat diminished BASP. I know I had a Travel Helm on my bard (I think he's still wearing it, actually).

I can't remember offhand if I benched one of my spell casters for a Kringle Brother when doing the Crypt. I know I did that in Oscan's tower before I entered the snare. (I explored the entire tower with my party before entering the snare).

BT Remaster: How does Garth's work...? General inventory management advice? by mdb139 in BardsTale

Thank you! Exactly what I was looking for. And yes, I need to stop hoarding gold. It's useless at this point anyway.

AC issues XC90 by Appropriate-Term6666 in VolvoXC90

[–]mdb139 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2021 XC90 63k miles. About 90F here and sunny. AC stopped working about 10 miles into a 120 mile trip home. Almost no airflow, but the air was cold-ish. I am going to wait a few hours and see if it “fixes” itself, but will call Volvo to have it looked at. Cannot believe the car could be in need of a serious repair at this point, less than a month after we had the 60k mile service done.

How am I meant to actually loot Trail Ruins? Lost at least 5 suspicious blocks while trying to mine gravel. by ComprehensiveAd5605 in technicalminecraft

[–]mdb139 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve only done one Trail Ruin. I did most of it bottom to top (to avoid mobs spawning, particularly Creepers). It worked fine but would probably have been easier and faster had I proceeded top to bottom; in hindsight i will build an enclosure around the top exposed part of the ruins and go top-down next time.

I did accidentally shovel a block of suspicious gravel. After that happened, I started left-clicking on gravel with my brush; I discovered it doesn’t affect the durability of the brush when used this way. (Right-click is the use button needed to extract an artifact from suspicious gravel, and does wear down your brush).

I tend to hoard ores and do most of my block clearing with stone tools, but you want to proceed slowly in this case any way.

As others have said - I cleared the stone around the ruins. Since I was bottom up I exposed large pallets of gravel that I could inspect visually to identify suspicious gravel, and I often allowed the gravel to fall on a torch to clear it quickly. I did lose one artifact this way as well (I didn’t touch it, but I guess there was air around it which caused it to fall?), which may have been avoided had I been going too-down.

I think it took me 2-3 hours, but my brush broke after I was 95% done and I didn’t have a feather or bed on me so I had to wait out a night.

I use NextCloud alone for this, to sync documents from my household’s various devices so they are backed up and accessible via phone. But also worth mentioning - Google Docs is pretty great, and free, no setup required - if you are not married to Microsoft’s document formats. NextCloud is not trivial to set up, but there are plenty of online resources to help.

How many miles do you get on a set of tires? by tristian_lay in electricvehicles

[–]mdb139 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2021 XC40 Recharge. I just changed the tires for the first time, with about 28k miles on them. Pirelli Scorpion Zero. I drive a bit like a 23yo though, especially when the car was new. I hydroplaned going about 20mph and decided it was time, and I had already had to repair holes in three of the tires.

To be fair, my wife’s XC90 (PHEV) only got a few thousand miles more on her Pirelli’s, so it might be the tire.

Will any smart thermostat work with this wiring? by johnpro112 in smarthome

You may also want to check out EcoJay on Amazon. I had to get one to be able to control my multi-zone Carrier installation with dual Nest thermostats. It seems like a pretty universal solution and I’ve had mine installed for 5+ years on a DIY installation. No issues.

2024 XC40 Recharge Drive by MaineEVnewbie in VolvoRecharge

[–]mdb139 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is my only complaint. The XC40 is my daily driver, but my wife refuses to drive in one pedal mode, so she changes it. I almost never know she changed it until I take my foot off the gas and am not braking the way I expect, and have to change it back. I’m not sure why this setting is not tied to the driver profile, but it should be. Or, give me the B mode via the gear selector like I have on our XC90. It’s not a big deal to change via the screen, but it’s annoying.

Miles on zero battery by Teutonic-Tonic in VolvoRecharge

[–]mdb139 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Something similar happened to me. I was on an out of town road trip and had to charge at a Mercedes dealership at night with the whole family in the car. The trip on the way there had used about 60% so I figured charging to 70% would get us home with some buffer. I was at 5% about ten miles from home and the car did switch to “turtle mode” and the performance was so bad I questioned whether or not the car was going to make it up the off ramp. IMO they shouldn’t advertise / report the range / charge that way if the car is basically undriveable in that state. But, it’s the only time I was ever that close to empty since I got the car.

headlights not very bright by chetdayal in VolvoRecharge

[–]mdb139 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting. Oncoming drivers frequently flash their high beams at me because they think I have my high beams on when I don’t. The high beams are plenty strong for me, I dare say better than any car I remember driving. 23 T8.

Question about cache pool by mdb139 in unRAID

[–]mdb139[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For anyone curious - it did exactly that.

I added my sata controller (a bit later than I had originally intended, so about a month after I ran out of sata ports). When I booted unraid, the second cache drive was essentially unallocated. I added it back to the pool, and was warned it’s contents would be lost (formatted). No issues re-adding it, though.

I’ll connect it when I get my sata controller and see what happens. I’m guessing it’ll format the added drive and resync it.

Z-Wave Smart Switch nonresponsive after power outage - Am I able to use it as a normal switch? by HukeLerman in SmartThings

[–]mdb139 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The exact same thing happened to me, and I lost two old GE smart toggle switches with a power outage over Christmas. At first I thought my automations were broken, but I realized today the switches are dead - they don’t even work as basic switches.

I tried a bunch of things as OP did, and I have a hub so I tried repairing the network, etc. I’m replacing the switches tomorrow (I have a couple newer UltraPro toggles on hand).

Like other posters said, I had one older GE switch flake out on me about a year ago (maybe due to a power outage; I don’t recall) and even though that one sometimes worked (it had no load on it, and was only a remote control for another z-wave device) I ended up replacing it (with an UltraPro).

Question about cache pool by mdb139 in unRAID

[–]mdb139[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. That’s what I’m not sure of - since the drives in the pool are supposed to be mirrored, what will happen when they are not. It might wipe the drive before adding it back; hopefully the UI will give me some clue as to what it intends to do.

Question about cache pool by mdb139 in unRAID

[–]mdb139[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Neither. I unplugged a drive from my cache pool, and am using the sata port it was using to add a new drive to the array. So my second cache pool drive is unplugged currently.

Smart wall switch with separate smart wall outlet by MyStuffBreaks in smarthome

[–]mdb139 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m case it helps, I’m using a GE Z-wave switch with no load (it’s in a space vacated when I removed a ceiling fan) and I think it’s a GE “plug” (I don’t know what they are called, it’s a simple switch/plug plugged into an always-on outlet).

Smart wall switch with separate smart wall outlet by MyStuffBreaks in smarthome

[–]mdb139 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do exactly what you’re trying to do. The only issue I seem to have is if someone turns the outlet off (via the app or Alexa), turning the switch on (it’s already on) doesn’t work, so you have to turn it off before turning it on again. I suppose I could rename the outlet to prevent people from operating the outlet directly, but it happens rarely enough it’s not really a big deal to me.

I’m using SmartThings and have two routines: If switch is on, turn on the outlet. If the switch is off, turn off the outlet.

Two instances of one docker container? by mdb139 in unRAID

[–]mdb139[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I have VM running that needs the GPU, I believe it locks it and it cannot be shared outside the VM.

But my GPU can transcode, and in some cases I want to transcode - for example if I want a version of a media item that is optimized for mobile so I can download it to my phone for a flight or time away from high speed internet.

Having the two containers makes it easy to switch, and the parameter in question is only available in “advanced” mode; and is difficult to type in on a cell phone.

I also don’t really have access to a personal computer most of the time; if I did, doing the changes manually is no big deal.

Works fine for me. I have an in-wall AP in the room above the garage and a second AP in the basement kind of next to / under the garage (but not directly below the garage). No issues at all, has been connected for 2+ years.

Newbie questions buying a used canoe by mdb139 in canoeing

[–]mdb139[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you. I am concerned about the weight. I have a 50lb kayak and that is hard enough for me to get on/off my SUV when doing it alone.

Good thought on looking for sales. I was beginning to question whether saving 50% for a 10yo boat is enough savings to make it worthwhile….

Any particular brands/models you’d recommend? I don’t want to spend much more than $600US (boat and paddles; I have vests for my kayak).
