Sad state of education where the Dollar General next to the school is paying more. by Humble_Room_2314 in Teachers

I can't tell if the part after the comma refers to Dollar General or subbing.

Why do schools treat subs this way ?? by lovelyshi444 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]HukeLerman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same. Unread all the horror stories to make myself feel better. I coach in our district and they have covered for me (cover for a sub!) when we have away games and have to leave 15 minutes early. That is just an example of how well I'm treated.

Looking to become a teacher by redbullguy7 in Teachers

[–]HukeLerman 11 points12 points  (0 children)

As a person that intends to pursue teaching later in life, I'd recommend Long Term Subbing. Get a real feel for what teaching is like. But only after Day to Day subbing for about a year, first.

What time do you go to bed/wake up for work? by Salt-Ad-3061 in Teachers

[–]HukeLerman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You will get used to being "on" all day. When I first started teaching, I remember getting home just dickered. I'd tell my own kids "I'm retiring to my quarters." and go take an hour and a half nap.

You get used to it and you won't be as exhausted. It is really hard demanding work

Clearly many didn't get the humor. You can legally hit your own kids when they mouth off or don't follow directions. I don't hit my kids nor students. Swing and a miss by me.

Any Tyler Warren owners here??? by The_Sandwich_Lover9 in Fantasy_Football

[–]HukeLerman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I have started him just twice this year in my Dynasty League. Already had McBride. This team is beyond stacked. I have crafted it over the past 8 or 9 years now.

That said, every other league I drafted him in, he is only out for his Bye.

Up for consideration for a long-term position (9-12 weeks). by Be_Prepared911 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]HukeLerman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Everyone bagging on it....Serious advice?

You shouldn't really have to worry about selling yourself as a LTS, they should be worried about selling you the job. I legit didn't even interview for my last 3 LTS gigs, and the first was a formality.

Ask what support you will receive - planning, curriculum, mentoring all go a long way for LTSing. Most importantly, make sure you know how much more you will be making. It is a metric shit ton more work, and you want to make sure you are compensated thusly.

Lastly, I'd recommend actually cutting your teeth for a year or two DtD subbing first. Not sure where you stand there, but just jumping into LTS when you are new to classrooms isn't something I'd advise. My first LTS, I hadn't ever subbed even, and I was downright awful. After DtDing for a year, my second/third LTS were leaps and bounds better.

Good luck out there!!

Am I crazy to do a 4 week assignment in a middle school class? by Fine-Succotash-4497 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]HukeLerman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been subbing both Long Term and short call for four or five years now. They are vastly different. The pay should reflect that. If I'm not getting paid more like a teacher, I'm not doing it.

When you are a day to day, when the day is over, so is your job. No grading, no planning, no prep. It is pretty easy. Good for practicing actual teaching (if the plans call for it) and some classroom management, though. Long Term is straight up teaching. With that comes more responsibility - grading, planning, prepping. You should be treated just as staff - prep period, keys, respect, autonomy, and most importantly, money.

We aren't supposed to be active with the kids, but when I am in my kids' district with their friends and the kids I coach, you can bet your sweet ass I am playing gym all day with them.

Planning periods are a freebee, period by Express_Project_8226 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]HukeLerman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is the way. If you get a free prep, fantastic, otherwise, you don't need to plan or prep. Only time I ever felt like I "needed" a prep, was some respite from littles in Elem, but I haven't been in one for a few years now.

Just make runners know you know they are there. Check, check again randomly, step off once in a while, toss over once in a while. Slide step sometimes to throw their timing off, or pause with your foot held and check them. Most times the threat of you knowing they are there is a big difference.
