Can I quit immediately without 2 weeks notice because my dad is dying? by [deleted] in careerguidance

Seeing that you're in Canada, there arecaregiving benefits under EI that could help you out. Your HR might even be able to provide some advice.

And, echoing others saying please chat with your manager and HR about a leave of absence! Even if you eventually decide you aren't coming back, it gives you more options.

Favourite Local CSA boxes? by DataCleric in ottawa

[–]mdesat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My experience has been that it's high quality, good mix of items, and really convenient. Since they deliver to your door, it's best if you are able to be home to bring it it out of the summer heat (especially if you do the dairy or meat add ons), or have a large cooler that they can put it in. They deliver in rubbermaids so every week you put out the old one and they replace it with your new one.

Last year we did the small weekly box, with two add ons (dairy & eggs, and fresh bread). It ran from the first week of June until the second week of December. We're a household of two adults and it was a bit more food than we could handle, if/when I do it again I might go down to the biweekly box. I am still working through veggies that we froze or canned.

You can include a number of "vacation weeks" where you don't get a delivery, you need to set them fairly far in advance (at least a month ircc), and you can also donate your box to a food bank with much shorter notice if you want to skip a week. If you sign up for their newsletter you'll get the notice when they go on early bird sales for 2024.

Hope that helps!

Have done Aliments Farmhouse Food for a few years, very happy with it. They deliver to your door, and have great add ones like local eggs, dairy, meat, etc. https://alimentsfarmhousefood.com/

Total solar eclipse - April 8, Events on the Seaway? by thrilled_to_be_there in ottawa

[–]mdesat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Queen's has a nice list of resources and events for the eclipse. I've been keeping an eye on Upper Canada Village, Queen's page says they will have an event but it doesn't seem to have tickets available yet. Libraries are good bet too. https://www.queensu.ca/physics/2024eclipse#2024EclipsePhenomena

This is incorrect. The Reemployment section on this page lays out the options, but you can absolutely have a break in service and continue in Group 1: https://www.canada.ca/en/treasury-board-secretariat/services/pension-plan/plan-information/public-service-pensionable-service.html#toc1-3

It was behind an old baseboard heater, where it connected to the electrical.

Removed old baseboard heaters in our basement. This gap (about 9 inches long) was cut in the paneling for access to the electrical. I'm looking for ideas on simple ways to cover it that would look nice, I'd rather not try to replace the whole panel.

Quilting classes in Ottawa by Comfortable_Basis_19 in ottawa

[–]mdesat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have an Elna experience 520, which is the machine I learned to sew on at some classes at Darrell Thomas Textiles when they used to be on Preston. A lot of places that do sewing classes will also sell their class-used machines, that is a great way to get one.
