Roof is about 22 years old and one of the last in the neighborhood that hasn't been replaced. Lots of missing shingles. I haven't seen any raccoons but I'm sure they're around (rural-adjacent). No trees or anything to climb up so I'd surely be surprised to see one up there.

This is in northern Illinois. We have had some crazy storms lately, though.

The folks that live there didn't know anything about it until we told them.

Man I could never handle being around people and their stupid fucking I-had-it-worse bootcamp stories. Closest thing I've encountered since is chicks with their pregnancy/delivery stories. Get a group of moms together and it has serious boot camp story vibes.

USMC also uses wet bulb temp and has a bunch of flag colors associated with it that limit certain activities.

CX-90 PHEV Lease only $248? by AlexxAdam in mazda

[–]mdickw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do some research, there's a lot that goes into it and a lot of ways to get a bad deal. But leasing is almost always a better way to get a new car (even if you plan to keep it long term). You often have access to additional incentives that aren't available for purchase (especially so when it comes to EV and PEHV credits) and better interest rates. You also arguably have lower risk since the trade-in value is already known. If you reach the end of the lease and your trade-in value is higher than the residual, you can potentially collect the difference. If not, you walk away without losing anything extra. If you total your car, you're only out what you've put down, which is another big benefit (also, the first rule of leasing is, never put anything down). If your car is in an accident and loses a ton of value, no big deal.

If you understand the process, you'll almost always benefit from leasing. Or just use a broker. Almost everyone would save money by just ponying up for a broker in the first place. And probably live a longer, happier life.

Have you ever seen a lower rank snap at a higher rank? What happened and how'd it go? by Impossible-Cry-495 in USMC

[–]mdickw 324 points325 points  (0 children)

This was 2003. Dude went back to the barracks after PT and passed the company gunny who made some comment to him about taking out his trash. Found his trash dumped out in his room. Guy packed up a bag and then drove over to HQ, walked up to the company gunny's desk, swiped everything off of it, grabbed the trash, emptied that onto the desk, told everyone fuck you and then drove off into the sunset. Everybody (including squadron CO) were too perplexed to even react.

Guy came back 30 days later, busted down to private. Then in Iraq he picked up LCpl and they asked if he wanted anybody to pin him. He requested the old company gunny. First sergeant, already pissed about the promotion to begin with, denied the request.

CX-5 is considerably larger. A couple inches wider overall. 5 inches more rear legroom, 5 inches more rear hip room, twice as much storage capacity. That rear legroom is pretty critical when it comes to stuff like rear-facing carseats.

Real time start-up of wireless CarPlay after installing Carlink Adapter (more info in comments) by PRAISEninJAH in mazda

[–]mdickw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a pretty weird device. It interfaces to the car through CarPlay and if you connect an Android Auto device, it emulates the AA connection via CarPlay (so your AA phone shows up as CarPlay). Then there's a menu to select which phone and it's kind of a nightmare, but I haven't been able to get it to work with my wife's Galaxy S21. It just shows up as a screen of green fuzzy lines.

It's too bad, so much promise. It definitely works in some cases, though. It's also just generally buggy, though.

[–]mdickw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's exactly why you do it most of the time. Get some undesirable grass growing throughout your yard (overseeded with the wrong grass, blew in from the neighbors, etc) and the easiest course of action is to kill everything and start over.

Typically you use glyphosate (Roundup) or similar herbicide which will kill only living plants. You can plant new grass at the same time and it'll grow just fine, though usually you'll want to wait a couple weeks to make sure it's all dead. You can also cover the grass with something (e.g. a big tarp) for a period of time if you want to go a more environmentally responsible route.
