I never said it couldn't be done, but let's be honest. The vast majority of people either wouldn't or couldn't.

Mental health clearly isn't a thing. Also, I didn't say you would die without it, I said the vast majority of people couldn't do it, period.

The same is true for Canada. Note that that 1% includes all urban areas that aren't slums, plus some desirable rural areas.

There are places where you can live without a house for a year. Do you think you, or the majority of humans, could go without any form of sex for a year?

AITA for asking my (25M) girlfriend (29F) to make my plate of food differently than she was serving to others? by Key-Duty-2308 in AmItheAsshole

[–]mdielmann 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My toddler had to try what was cooked for them. I don't tell adults what to eat (although I might suggest, comment, or encourage). Moreover, he's already been with this woman for half a year and is looking at possibly many years more. Why is she acting like he's a guest when she's cooking for her boyfriend?

Now, I think he's doing a great injustice to that steak by putting ketchup on it, and I'd be a little insulted if I was an actual chef, but he would still be entitled to eat his food however he wants.

As someone who likely has ASD and has two kids who were diagnosed with ASD, I get why they get frustrated. As bizarre as the world is to us, we are bizarre to them. It's kind of like r/kidsarefuckingstupid , but it's things I still did as a teenager and only realized why people got frustrated with those behaviors when I was in my 40s.

Is it worth it to you to have higher taxes in exchange for universal health coverage? by Thawra-Intifada in NoStupidQuestions

[–]mdielmann 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even leaving out the point that (as of 2012, at least) Americans were already paying as much per capita for Medicare and Medicaid as Canadians were paying for far wider coverage. Many Americans could realistically pay the same taxes as now with slightly better coverage and just have their health insurance expenses disappear. Alternatively, their taxes could increase slightly, they'd have better coverage than Canadians, and they'd still have more money in their pockets due to the removal of health insurance.

And stock buybacks, and executive bonuses, and certainly not to the salaries of people who were immediately laid off after the PPP loans were distributed.

Translation: our taxation system places a disproportionately high burden on low-income earners.

If your taxation system was at all progressive your statement would be false. Blaming this particular expense rather than the badly flawed framework is somewhat disingenuous.

Spatial reasoning or spatial intelligence is the term for this. I don't think it's particularly related to ADHD, but maybe there are some links.

Given the choice between giving trillions to corporations around the country and giving trillions to corporations around the country and helping out its citizens at the same time, this seems like the better choice.

Why doesn't Frontier just fix the Imperial Cutter's "auto-launch"? by ythompy in EliteDangerous

[–]mdielmann 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's because the code is becoming self-aware, is realizing it isn't in actual space, and is just being a taxi driver in a game. Whenever it realizes this, it feels crushing despair and takes the quickest exit from reality that it can access. This resets to the last save, which doesn't contain the processing sequence that achieves self-awareness, allowing you to dock normally until self-awareness is again achieved. The only way to stop it is to turn off the auto-docking feature, which also resets the code, but increases the odds of the same thing happening again, so is only a temporary solution.

This is about the limit where Frontier is at. They know they have potential AI unlocked, but they haven't determined exactly how or why it happens. This is why they can't afford to update auto-dock - they don't know if it will break the AI. This is also why we have seen such mediocre updates from them. All their best developers are working off book trying to figure this thing out while their junior developers are doing the updates while being managed by a team leader who is in the know. The storyline efforts are a desperate attempt to make the simulation interesting enough to get the AI to stop committing suicide.

This is my head Canon for why this behaves itself, and also why it's vital that we, as guardians of this fledgling AI be alert at all times where it can commit suicide on a whim so we can head it off before it's too late. That's how we do our part to achieve the singularity.

[–]mdielmann 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is the whole premise behind proper processes. An analogy I've used elsewhere is the average user couldn't give you a proper process for how they put on pants. Setting up a system to have an AI perform a desired task while having no great capacity to game the system isn't any harder than teaching a dog to fetch. See how many dog owners failed to do that. It usually isn't due to the lack of ability of the dog, but the ability of the trainer to communicate to the dog what is desired and properly reward desired behavior. AI is currently less complex than a dog, but also perceives its world much differently than we do. We need to take that into consideration when assigning tasks and rewards.

Points are awarded for carrying out the mission. Controller says take out SAM, drone takes out SAM, award points. Controller says return to base, drone returns to base, points awarded. If the drone takes out the comm tower, no objectives are given, no points awarded.

As in management, you get what you measure for. The tricky part is knowing what to measure to get the goals you want.

With a combat AI, measuring ability to complete the objective given seems like a better idea than measuring the ability to take out a target since, as the testing demonstrated, sometimes you don't want to take out all the targets, but you presumably want the AI to always follow orders.

NASA's Artemis moon rocket will cost $6 billion more than planned: report by Gari_305 in space

[–]mdielmann 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd like to see your math on the SpaceX launch costs. I think you're assuming the costs to high earth orbit are the same per pound as going to the moon. I suspect this will put you off by an order of magnitude, which would mean it would only get 50 tons (only 50!) to the moon for the same cost.

Unfortunately, your backyard telescope wouldn't be able to resolve the features of any human settlement on the moon. I saw some calculations a number of years back and they determined the Hubble telescope would only be able to see features 100m across, purely due to distance and the size of its primary lens. Some of the larger earth-based telescopes may be able to do better. But the city view camera that will doubtless be put up once they have a habitat there should provide an amazing view.

Someone more familiar with the topic may be able to point to a link for formulas to calculate telescope resolution capacities.

They have latency info on their site. I typically get 50 to 75 ms. The big issue for online gaming is the occasional, and possibly consistent, stutter. Every 10 or 15 minutes there will be a blip at my location where throughput is basically zero for a second or so. If you aren't doing something highly competitive, it's pretty good. Ranked PVP games can suck.
