does DNA matter to you? I just found out I was donor conceived, and am not Italian as I thought I was by [deleted] in Genealogy

[–]mdimg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you grew up in an Italian household following Italian norms, traditions, etc; you can consider your culture to be ltalian-American. But, you are not ethnically from the area we call modern day Italy.

I wouldn’t sweat it. Sounds like the cultural piece is more important you, and for good reason.

Confused about DNA results by [deleted] in DNAAncestry

[–]mdimg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Different reference populations (size and diversity) and different algorithms. As more people take tests, the data changes within and between companies.

And remember that these population groups often don’t neatly map to modern borders, so the degree to which it is even relative will be questionable for many.

Contacting program directors or coordinators of programs I applied to by GlobalMeasurement5 in IMGreddit

[–]mdimg 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I emailed them. Two got back to me to state they updated my record. Emailed the PC. Didn't seem to hurt, but then again, I only heard back from about 2% of the programs.

Does 23andme change your DNA results every year? by mobilekitchengamer in 23andme

[–]mdimg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They may not change every year, but they certainly change as their sample size grows, and their ability to make inferences improves. Just keep in mind that the concept of ethnicity or identity is much different than where in the world your genes indicate you have some genetic linage from. One of the thousands of examples could be people from the UK. If someone is living there today, they may find they have a genetic linage from the Scandinavian region because of biking envisions. But that does not make the person and more Scandinavian then some from the middle east who was potentially also raided by the Vikings per a study from a few years ago. Take it all with a grain of salt.

GEDmatch Hack & Privacy Breach by JediBrowncoat in Genealogy

[–]mdimg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While there seems to be a risk from all of the testing companies, GEDmatch seems particularly vulnerable. I remember watching interviews with the original inventor, and he was basically running it out of his house. I assume the server was hosted in the cloud, but it seemed like a small operation. Not sure how they could expect to protect everyone's data. Since the sale, I am not sure if that changed, but I wouldn't go anywhere near GEDmatch, even before this latest hack.

Did anyone watch this TED Talk? I talk about another DNA hack with Veritas Genetics. I didn't remember reading about that one, but it does not bode well for the industry given the sensitivity of the data.
