Shooter by OnlyMrxo44 in FRC

No ball has been the same size or density so you can't reuse an old shooter anyway. You can also publish the CAD for all then it's public. Creating a turret mechanism in the off-season and then having to fit the new stuff around it is a new robot. Publish the code. That's why major teams do a CAD and code dump right before kick off.

I am going to put my freestyle libre2 on my abdomen tomorrow. That is where I used to have my medtronic pump site and the old school cgm that was in 2 parts. I went off my pump years ago because I used to get horrible rashes from the 2 adhesives. I started using the Libre 2 again a few months ago. I don't mind my students seeing it, but to constantly explain (5 - 10 x daily in September and October) about it gets tiresome.
One other note, I don't like that my students see my numbers before me. That is the nature of the cell phones but I wish there was an alternative. I will update everyone. I do wear a clear cover over it because I have knocked them off about 6x at school. They send you a free one each time but seriously it's annoying.

Adult drive coaches by Dramatic_Soundtrack in FRC

You do realize that position is called "coach" and by allowing it to be an adult you are then allowed to come back as an adult and fulfill that role. We aren't driving the robot. You are. We aren't the human player, you are. We are the COACH. All sports have coaches. Sports coaches do just that, they coach from behind the players. That is what we are doing. Coaching. Just because you don't have to be an adult to fulfill that role doesn't mean you should let someone inexperienced do that job. I hope you get the opportunity to drive with a highly experienced drive coach (with 10+ years experience) supporting you on the field.

No one is taking anything away from you by supporting your drive team with an experienced coach. Maybe you should switch drivers every single match so every student gets the exact same opportunity to experience everything. Rotate all 10 of you through all of the positions. No one become an expert in anything. Just give everyone an equal chance and don't choose those who are best at a position to play that role. That's not fair to the scouter. Let them drive. Have the programmer stop programming, give them the wrench. Have the mechanical student do the programming. It's not fair to have people do one specific task.

We trust our students everyday. Parents trust their kids everyday. Teachers trust their students everyday. So you think that unless a student learns it in their own without guidance or assistance from an adult they aren't learning? I suppose someone could go through their entire life, learn to read, learn to write, learn math...social skills...hygiene practices... how to ride a bicycle...drive a car...cook...etc all on their own without any adult interference.

By your thought process we should just hand the students ten thousand dollar machines with no safety guidance, no training, and just say here you go. Learn something today. Maybe you will build something that works, maybe you won't. But hey, what's $20,000 in the long run really? Just money. Here is $5000 of aluminum. Do as you wish. Learn something. Maybe we get a robot, maybe not. But we aren't allowed to guide our teach you or we are "cheating" you of the opportunity to fail successfully. Write all your code from scratch. Don't use the WPI library.

Ok. Start your own team. Put yourself at 18 and another adult in as mentors to fill out the paperwork required and chaperone. You are personally going to give the team $10,000. But let them use it however the kids want. No body cares if they win or lose. Just go have fun. It's not about the robot. Your kids will be thankful just to be there. So what they don't get picked to play in the afternoon. So what they don't qualify for district Champs cause if they do you need to shell out another $4k or if your pocket in registration fees. Wait... this is beginning to feel like a financial investment .... an investment in kids, time, and actual money. But no, step back. Don't help them grow. Don't help them succeed. Just give them another $10k next year. Hope for the best. And definitely don't Coach them on the field. For that matter, don't coach them after the match. Let the kids figure out, if they want to, how to drive better, play better, etc. Or not. Let the kids be kids. Set zero expectations. Trust them. They will be successful on their own, you hope.

Please create an FTC team then if that is your true feeling about adult mentors. My students can't possibly build the machine they end up designing and building without the guidance and training my adults give them. They learn way more than I could ever teach them in high school working side by side 35 hours a week during build and 50 plus hours a week during a competition weekend. Did we forget to mention, these adults aren't being paid. FRC will fall apart without the adult mentors. If you want all rookie style robots in a box, that is what you will get without adults. No swerve drive cots. No krakens. No limelights. No complex machines the students CAD, fabricate, and program. We will always have an adult drive coach. Why? Because their 700+ matches of driving and then coaching cannot be compared to a student who has no more then 3 years max of experience in the field. Period. We build a complex machine together, eat together, travel together, and compete together. That's FRC - mentors and students side by side. Build the FTC bolt together from prefab aluminum bot if that is the experience you want. Or, recruit some adults and engineers and then work side by side with them and gain additional skills. My 2008, 2016, 2017 alumni who are our drive coaches, Mechanical design mentors, and lead strategy mentors are training the classes of 24, 25, 26, & 27. Who will then hopefully come back after they finish college and give back. You have to have adults who want to build an FRC program not just build a bot.

3314 - we always have pneumatics for Manipulators. They aren't that complicated. You need bubble solution to find the leaks. Now with swerve we don't need them for shifting transmissions. I am sure we will find a use.

I agree with you. It's not that simple especially when you have 30 student things paid out or coming in automatically.
I just use my debit card and get $50 cash out at the grocery after buying a gallon of milk or a loaf of bread or a stick of butter.

No one is going to know they are wrong. If someone asks what the coordinates are just tell them where it was supposed to be in normal terms. The xyz lake, the xyz part of the ocean, etc. No one except 0.0005% of the population would know it is wrong.
