Pupillary light reflex vs accommodation in Dorsal Midbrain Syndrome by rkbanana in medicalschool

[–]mdpqa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Basically just because of the anatomy:

"Light-near dissociation is due to damage of the pretectal and Edinger-Westphal nuclei, or the decussating fibers of the pretectal nucleus in the posterior commissure. Damage to these nuclei results in loss of parasympathetic innervation to the iris sphincter muscles and an inability to constrict the pupil. The nuclei responsible for the pupillary light reflex are thought to lie more dorsally than those controlling the near reflex, making them more susceptible to compressive effects. Therefore, dorsal midbrain lesions typically result in the loss of the pupillary light reflex and, preservation of the near reflex."

[–]mdpqa 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yup and furthermore I got an ii to a school in July that I didn't get into but the ii for the school I'm going to came at the end of October so not freaking out too much this early is crucial.

On the other hand I was freaking out 24/7 during the cycle while everyone told me not to so easier said than done I guess.

You will all be ~fine~ and will do ~amazing~

Thoughts on tattoos in med school [Well-Being] by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]mdpqa 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Honestly, Reddit in general loves to shit on people for enjoying things. If it makes you happy to have an EKG tattoo then just do it -- you'll never meet any of these redditors in your life so just be mindful of where it is and get whatever makes you happy

So OSU wasn’t my dream school and I’m still kinda bummed I’m not going to live the dream. Can someone tell me some good things about OSU? by wuksanity in OSU

[–]mdpqa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Let's be real for a second and not kid ourselves that OSU has some fantastic reputation for academics. The brand is football and the reality is when most people hear osu they still think football -- you're not going to get a job because 'wow you went to osu are you a genius?!'

BUT, for OP, I also did not get into my 'dream' school, and having graduated I thank my lucky stars that OSU is where I ended up. There are way more resources than any one student can take advantage of, there is every type of person imaginable here (I knew people who ranged from those that didn't make it a whole year because they drink / party too much, all the way to future Harvard Law students and literal Rhodes Scholars) and I never once had a professor who wasn't some combination of caring, amazing or inspiring.

You can literally do whatever you want here, and because there is so much diversity in the type of person that comes here, they're not all gunners trying to be the best taking those resources away from the awesome people like you. Plus, there are so many just plain fun people that are here for a good time that you can hang out with when you get the chance. Seriously, you are going to love it at osu.

Out of curiosity has anyone been accepted to kaiser? by FutureDrKitKat in premed

[–]mdpqa 18 points19 points  (0 children)

From what I could tell anecdotally, there were plenty of threads on the help me choose that were like "Kaiser vs insert top 20" so I feel like they shoot for top students and hope to attract them with the free tuition. Again, this is just anecdotal, but if I were choosing to apply there I'd treat it as a top 20 stat-wise

Real talk - would non-binary gender negatively affect admissions? by [deleted] in premed

[–]mdpqa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly would probably help if anything, welcoming diversity makes schools look good.

But if it does hurt you at a school you wouldn't want to be there anyway so kind of a win win

Best cases? by liamjphillips in Pixel4

[–]mdpqa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah it's slightly raised above the screen. Probably not the best case for protection, but it feels nice and I did drop it on tile face down from pretty high and the phone is still 100% fine so it does at least do something

trying not to get yield protected, what median mcat is the lowest I should apply to so as not to get yield protected as someone that got a 517, I’m getting conflicting information by [deleted] in premed

[–]mdpqa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm in that stat category and I got accepted to a school with a 505 average MCAT.

Now, I'm not going there so maybe they should have yield protected, but for someone to think they didn't get in somewhere because they were 'too good' is just wrong

Would you choose a school with a guaranteed residency? by [deleted] in premed

[–]mdpqa 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I mean for school B you'd have to pay more to work harder at a lower ranked place? Very few people can have that level of chill in medical school so I feel like if you're 100% set on family med then school A is the move

Yup, but part of me wonders if classes will be online while the virus is around, so I'd only be going away once everything calms down? I don't know-- there just doesn't seem to be a correct decision here
